Volume 4 Number 8                                                                                                              June 1, 2015

Chase the First has a decidedly international tone this month as Tuxedo hosts the top professionals and amateurs in the World Doubles Championship and a week later, Newport will host the U.S. Pro Singles playing for the Schochet Cup.  Both events will feature tennis at its highest level. If you can't be there in person - be sure to catch the live stream video via the USCTA YouTube Channel.

Not to be outdone by the pros, twenty-one amateurs have just arrived home from England where they participated in the World Masters team and individual competitions. The U.S. put up a valiant effort, but along with the Australians were turned away by the teams from Great Britain. The Americans fared better in the individual events as Bill Barker was the finalist in the Over 50 singles and the finalist - partnering with Steve Hufford - in the Over 50 doubles. Perennial competitor - Dick Tanfield - was the finalist in the over 65 singles.

Meanwhile, back at home, Barker's fourteen-year-old son Erik was tearing up the court in Tuxedo winning both the inaugural U23 Doubles title with Adrian Camacho and the U26 Doubles title with John Beam. Paul Monaghan won the U23 and U26 Singles titles over Barker.

The BOS/WASH team won the 2014/15 National League final over CHI/PHL in a hotly contested night of tennis at Prince's Court. The teams split the singles matches, but Camden Riviere and Neil Mackenzie edged out Steve Virgona and John Lumley in the doubles for the title. Congratulations to Riviere, Mackenzie and Tony Hollins on a winning season.

Charleston has made great progress in the last month with the signing of the official "Court Tennis Agreement" between the USCTPF, Daniel Island and Charleston Court Tennis. This is a significant milestone and puts the court one step closer to reality. It's not too late to jump on board.

Looking ahead  - the second annual International Tennis Day will be held on Saturday, June 20. What is your club planning to do to mark this important day? Join clubs around the world in celebrating the anniversary of the "Tennis Court Oath" while raising the profile and catalyzing interest in our game around the world.

New York hosted the inaugural Spring Invitational and Pro/Am in May. John Lumley defeated Barney Tanfield in the final, while Chris Oberbeck and Tony Hollins teamed up to win the Pro/Am.

Dawson Lane reveals the answers to last month's quiz. How many did you get right?

Closing on an international note - best of luck to the U.S. Clothier/Van Alen Cup team. The team comprised of Paul Monaghan (Capt.), Dylan Ward, Laurenson Ward and Adrian Camacho, accompanied by Alec Monaghan as chaperone, will be traveling to Melbourne at the end of the month for team matches between the U.S, Australia and Great Britain. Best of luck and have a great time!  Until next month...

Sincerely,

U.S. Court Tennis Association

2015 U23, U26 CHAMPIONSHIPS

by Dawson Lane

A small, but enthusiastic group of young court tennis players made their way to The Tuxedo Club for two very busy days of play! Players representing The Prince's Court (D.C.), The Philadelphia Racquet Club, The Boston Tennis & Racquet Club & The Tuxedo Club were represented.

Singles Summary

As expected, Paul Monaghan (Philadelphia) & Erik Barker (D.C.) navigated their respective halves of both singles draws to meet in the Final of both events. After a long weekend of Tennis; both players and the tournament committee decided that one best of three set match would determine the champion for both age groups. The spectators were treated to a great display of tennis from both ends of the court, with Monaghan's experience & power advantage proved a bit too much for Barker.....this time...though Monaghan and the spectators are aware Barker will be a force to reckon with in the future.

Doubles Summary

Both Doubles Finals had a bit of a Tuxedo feel to them; which was very exciting for the host club as there has been a conscious effort by the committee to get more juniors involved in the game.  Click here for the full story, photos and draws.

INTERNATIONAL TENNIS DAY

by Jim Zug

International Tennis Day has taken off in its second year. There is an explosion of activity all around the globe scheduled for Saturday 20 June. Many people are taking advantage of the fact that ITD is on a Saturday (this won't happen again until 2020) and events are planned on three continents. They include a 24-hour tennis marathon at Radley; Hobart hosting the Australian Ladies Championship; a touring side from Prince's Court is playing at Fontainebleau; Ballarat will working off hangovers after their Mid-Year Fundraiser Dinner; the Rose Bowl Tournament is at Newmarket; a club tournament will be at Leamington; and Paris is hosting a touring side from Prested Hall. Last year the Irish Real Tennis Association gathered outside the old Guinness court in Dublin. This year: Lambay Island?

Here in the States, every club is planning something. Aiken is doing a skills challenge like last ITD. Tuxedo is hosting an intercity match with Washington. Boston, Newport, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago-everyone has something going on.

On the 20th, everyone will be posting photographs and reports at the ITD page at Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/itennisday

WE HAVE CROSSED SEVERAL MAJOR MILESTONES
FOR THE CHARLESTON COURT TENNIS PROJECT

The US Court Tennis Preservation Foundation, the Daniel Island Club and Charleston Court Tennis, LLC signed this month the official document "Court Tennis Agreement".  This document binds all parties, once the court is built, to various roles in the management, maintenance and ongoing expansion of the court tennis program at the Daniel Island Club.

What does this mean to the person that has made a pledge or intends to?  It means that the Foundation is now 100% committed to the building of the court and that all contributions will be tax deductible by individuals.  Also, it establishes an Advisory Board to oversee the operations of the court on behalf of the Foundation so that the court will be run properly and consistently with the goals of the Foundation and the US Court Tennis Association.

U.S. Cockram Cup Team

2015 COCKRAM CUP
By Steve Hufford

In spite of having seven players from five different clubs, or perhaps because of it, the US Cockram Trophy squad quickly formed a cohesive cadre of teammates, cheering each other on and providing useful advice, consolation, and congratulations.

We began our team practice on Monday, May 11 with three hours of structured play, and started to learn the features of the Cambridge blue court:  very lively back walls, "sticky" side walls that pop the ball out sideways, and natural lighting that varies with the patchy sunshine of the English spring.

2015 BOSTWICK CUP
By Charlie Johnstone

The 2015 Bostwick Cup was always going to be a struggle for the USA team. Captain Charles Johnstone welcomed his team to Newmarket, England on May 10th with a spirited practice and team dinner. The 2015 team consisted of Johnstone, Jamie Whitall and Bob Hay, New York, Ed Hughes, Lakewood, Doug Shear, Newport, Al Gordon, Chicago and Haven Pell and Vern Cassin, Washington. Missing were senior team veterans Greg Van Schaack, Peter Clement
and Peter Vogt.

U.S. Danby Cup Team:
Pilkington, Malone. McMorris, Abernathy, Flinn & Tanfield

2015 DANBY CUP
By Michael Flinn

The 2015 Danby Cup to be played at Prested Hall, Coggeshall, Essex, England, with Team USA comprised of Sam Abernathy, Mike Flinn, Cpt., Robert Pilkington, Dick Tanfield, Rick Malone and Howard McMorris, as well as the Australian and Great Britain Teams enjoyed a rousing pre-tournament welcome at Willie and Madeline Wilks flat in London on May 10th.  Willie is one of our favorite over seventy competitors-temporarily out of real tennis action-who nevertheless gave us all special camaraderie and hospitality.  Many thanks to Willie and Madeline.

On Monday, May 11th from 12-2PM, we were welcomed by Mike Carter, the builder/owner of the two Prested Hall Real Tennis Courts, for practice sessions.  This proved as well to be an awakening to the particular eccentricities of the court used in the tournament.

THE INAUGURAL WORLD DOUBLES JUNIOR PRO/AM COURT TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP

by Kevin Shea

Since its founding in 1886, a number of important inventions and "firsts" are alleged to have come from within the storied gates of Tuxedo Park and The Tuxedo Club, the home of the 2015 World Doubles Court Tennis Championship. To name just a few, these include; the invention of SONAR, the first game of Bridge played in the United States, and Pierre Lorillard's introduction of the tailless black dinner jacket, which quickly became known as the Tuxedo.

This year, The Tuxedo Club has added another page its rich history, in a world where there are few "firsts" remaining.

This past weekend, The Tennis House at The Tuxedo Club hosted The Inaugural World Doubles Junior Pro/AM Court Tennis Championship - Sponsored by ZipLocal and United States Court Tennis Preservation Foundation.

While the title of the event is a mouthful, spectators by the score that filled the dedans on the first weekend of World Doubles Championship Week at The Tuxedo Club were treated to more than an eyeful of great Junior ProAM Doubles Court Tennis action.

The first round format was a "double round robin" - pairing juniors together with a rotation of Court Tennis professionals - in a ten game, handicapped event. This was followed by a no-handicap, single-match elimination semi-final and final for the top four juniors and the top four Professionals.

It was rumored among the Court Tennis professionals that this event was "hit and giggle". It may have started that way but after more than 12 hours of action over two gorgeous days at The Tennis House in Tuxedo Park, four juniors and four Professionals emerged to the final draw. They were, from the juniors, Messrs. N. Motz, C Motz and Barker of Princes Court, Mr. Hill of Boston T&R. Professionals advancing included Clare Fahey, John Lumley, Ben Matthews and Chris Chapman.

The final three matches of this historic event inspired the professionals to "up their games" as the sets featured several heated volley battles, balls stolen from the last gallery, plenty of winners in the hazard end galleries and dedans, and shots to the tambour that never emerged from Tuxedo's dreaded and deep hazard end corner.

Ultimately, the Championship was competed for between familiar foes, Messrs. Barker and N. Motz who were ably supported by Claire Fahey and Ben Matthews with the pairing of Fahey and Barker taking the champion's trophy.

While tournaments always end with the awards ceremony, on Sunday the discussion in the Greevy room after the matches had a different theme - remarks centered on the field of 13 juniors their sportsmanship and great promise for each these "future stars" of Court Tennis in the United States.

Special thanks from the event sponsors, ZipLocal and the United States Court Tennis Preservation Foundation, to the Court Tennis Professionals who give so much to advance and develop the sport - Ms. Claire Fahey and Messrs. Chris Chapman, Tim Chisholm, John Lumley, Ben Matthews, Cam Riviere, Matt Ronaldson and Rob Whitehouse.

A good time was had by all.

2015 SPRING INVITATIONAL & PRO-AM

The Inaugural Spring Invitational and Pro-Am was hosted by the Racquet & Tennis Club May 7-10th. A fifteen-player field made up of eight professionals and seven amateurs competed for the title. On the Amateur side, the pedigree was very strong, with a multitude of both club champions and national titleholders. The Professional field was headed by World #13 John Lumley and featured Professionals from Boston, Washington, Philadelphia and New York.

Seven teams entered the Pro-Am. Nearly all of the matches were closely contested including the Final between Chris Oberbeck/ Tony Hollins and David Ford/ Matt Ronaldson. The nip and tuck match was eventually won by Oberbeck and Hollins

(10/7). The Pro-Am was greatly appreciated by all involved and will likely become a fixture to accompany the singles draw.

2015 VAN ALEN/CLOTHIER CUP TEAM

by Jane Lippincott

The Van Alen (US vs. GB), Clothier Cups (US vs. AUS) and Limb (GB vs. AUS) are international team competitions for players under the age of 26. The matches are played biennially. This year, the format has been changed and all three cups will be contested in one location. The tournaments will be played in Melbourne at the end of June. We are pleased to announce that the 2015 U.S. team will be Paul Monaghan (Capt.), Dylan Ward, Laurenson Ward and Adrian Camacho.

Paul Monaghan lives in Princeton, NJ and plays out of the Racquet Club of Philadelphia. Paul is a rising senior at Fordham University studying economics and is captain of the men's squash team. Paul has won several junior titles in both singles and doubles. He is the current U23 and U26 singles champion.

Dylan Ward is from Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia and graduated from Princeton University in 2014. Dylan played squash all four years at Princeton and earned second-team All American honors in his final year. Dylan was also captain of his team. He is working in New York City as an investment-banking analyst for a tech-focused investment bank that provides M&A and private capital advisory

Laurenson Ward, Dylan's brother, is a rising senior at Haverford College. Majoring in music, Laurenson is co-captain of the Haverford squash team. He won the Most Improved tennis player at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia this year.

Paul, Dylan, and Laurenson all play out of the Racquet Club of Philadelphia and were all members of the 2013 U.S. Clothier Cup team.

Adrian Camacho, originally from Virginia, is relatively new to the game. After growing up playing football and lacrosse, he was introduced to court tennis three years ago by Ivan Ronaldson and Phil Shannon. He has shown great potential as a real tennis player and is eager to join the US team this summer. Adrian is a member of Prince's Court and is the current U23 Doubles Champion.

Good luck team USA! We will continue coverage in next month's Chase the First.

Court Tennis Quiz
by Dawson Lane

**Certain answers are subjective based on the question, and by no means are intended to be considered the only 'right' answer**

1)  Who are the 3 ALL AMERICAN TEAMS that have won the US Open Doubles title since 1978?

A: There were actually 4 teams: Riviere/Chisholm, Clothier/Chisholm, Scott/Phipps and Clement/Burke

2) What pair is the only ALL AMERICAN TEAM to have won the British Open Doubles title?

A: Riviere/Chisholm

3) In what country could you have 4 serves to begin a point?

A: France

4) What is one reason for players TO NOT be deep in the court (chase 3 or better) and standing next to their partner when defending a good chase (3 or better).....or ever?

A: Collision or "yours" and nobody decides to move and hit the ball or it's easier to volley a ball at shoulder height than deal with a ball on the floor by your ankles.

5) What is arguably the best serve to negate a strong force return; and is currently used frequently by players when playing strong returners like Rob Fahey and Tim Chisholm?

A: Giraffe

6) Name a good return of serve strategy to involve your partner in the point and hopefully give your team clear access to the galleries to get a chase?

A: Fat boast off the main wall

7) Can you name the only team other than current title holders (Rob Fahey & Steve Virgona) to hold the World Doubles Championship Title?

A: Snow/Chisholm

ANNUAL JUNIOR
COURT TENNIS CAMP
July 13-17

The Player Development Committee has selected the Tuxedo Club for a one-of-a-kind junior court tennis camp. Court Tennis Champion - Tim Chisholm - will head up the USCTA/USCTPF sponsored junior tennis camp for one week this summer at the Tuxedo Club. The camp is designed for juniors ages 11-17 and modeled around a very successful and popular UK-based program. Beginner and experienced players are invited to participate.

For more information, contact

A fundraiser is being held at the T&R in Boston on June 15th featuring Rob & Claire Fahey and Camden Riviere to benefit the Charles River Public Internet Center.

The evening will consist of two interwoven tracks.  The first is court tennis play of the highest caliber known to have been assembled for a private event.

Between the athletic exhibitions will be a series of short lectures in the style of the French salons.  These lectures will detail how court tennis, Internet technology, and financial markets are linked in a rich chronology of mutual advance and contribution.  Our cast of "storytellers" will be comprised of several prominent individuals from academia, government, and technology who will enrich and inspire us with narratives of how such present day phenomena as the virtual currency Bitcoin has its roots in an 18th century monarchy whose favorite pastime was, of course, court tennis.

The evening's program will be complemented by a carefully curated array of fine food and wine.  Even a selection of cocktails made exclusively with ingredients drawn from across the centuries has been specially created for this event.
