Volume 4 Number 3                                                                               January 1, 2015

Happy New Year! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and are all rested up as it's going to be a busy couple of months ahead. Over a dozen national championships are on the line, National League, the U.S. Open and the 2015 World Doubles Championship and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Wow!

2014 ended on a high note with the Whitney Cup weekend. New York reversed last year's result by beating Greentree/Aiken in the final. The annual USCTA dinner and auction were a huge success, with over $100,000 being raised for Charleston. In addition to the auction, seven individuals were honored for their efforts over the past year from sportsmanship to improvement to service to the game. It was a spectacular weekend.

Camden Riviere won the National Open over James Stout capturing his third consecutive National Open title to add to his growing list of international wins in the past year. National League continues on in January and February before the pros turn their attention to the U.S. Open scheduled for late February in Boston.

Speaking of Camden, this month's Pro Tip comes from the 2014 USCTA Professional of the Year - Tony Hollins. According to Tony, if you stay calm, you too can retrieve just like Camden. What an interesting goal for 2015.

Tuxedo is busily planning for the 2015 World Doubles Championship, while Jim Zug and crew are gearing up for the second annual International Tennis Day in June. Don't worry, though, there's plenty more going on between now and June - just check the website.

New year, new look is what we're saying about our new website. Thanks to Jon Crowell and Ryan Carey, we have a new look. Take a peek and tell us what you think.

Until next month...

Sincerely,

Jane Lippincott - Editor

Happy holidays to all!

2014 NATIONAL OPEN
by Dacre Stoker

The Aiken Tennis Club hosted eleven professionals and two amateurs Dec. 5-7 to compete in The U.S. National Open. Tournament Director Dacre Stoker received plenty of technical support from Camden Riviere to organize the Main Draw and he also assisted in adding a Satellite and Pro Am event. Members of the ATC bought up many of the available tickets. Social Chair Michael Sullivan and his able committee put together two fabulous evenings of drinks and heavy hors d'oeuvres to sustain the galleries during the long hours and late nights of non-stop tennis action.

THE 81st WHITNEY CUP
by Zach Sacks

The Racquet & Tennis Club hosted the 81st annual Payne Whitney Intercity Doubles competition December 12th - 14th. The tournament included six teams of ten players each with nearly all of the top-50 U.S.  amateurs represented. Matches were best of three set affairs with 2-2 shortened third sets and no deuce-ad scoring. Four young at-heart rookies (Peter Cipriano, Geoff Ellis, John Saxe, and Gary Swantner) took to the courts in tow of their wizened teammates.

Beginning on Friday morning, the East court hosted two matchups in Group 1: Greentree-Aiken vs. Philadelphia and New England vs. Philadelphia. With some fresh blood and high hopes, Philadelphia fell flat against Greentree-Aiken. Despite close sets and good efforts in the second and fourth pairs, it was only the Philadelphia senior team of Dick Tanfield and Peter Vogt which came away with a win over the reigning champions; 4-1 in matches, Greentree-Aiken over Philadelphia.

2014 USCTA ANNUAL DINNER & AUCTION

The seventeenth annual USCTA Dinner and Auction was held on the Friday of the Whitney Cup weekend in New York. A packed house gathered for an evening of conversation and awards, capped off by a live auction to benefit the Charleston Court project.

USCTA President - Jeremy Wintersteen - presented the 2014 USCTA Awards during the dinner. Ranging from sportsmanship to literary achievement, the awards are the highest honor the Association presents on an annual basis.

CHARLESTON UPDATE: JANUARY 2015

The 2014 USCTA Auction proceeds went towards a new USCTA court development fund earmarked for Charleston. The evening was a huge success with over $100,000 being raised. The $100,000 put the pledges and dollars received for Charleston over the $1 million mark.

2015 INTERNATIONAL TENNIS DAY
by James Zug

The second-annual International Tennis Day is on Saturday June 20th  2015. http://internationaltennisday.com

Last year's inaugural event was a world-wise success. Clubs in all four playing nations, as well as the former and future country of Ireland, simultaneously celebrated tennis on the 20th of June with clinics, exhibitions, skills challenges and parties. The Racquet Club of Philadelphia screened a film about tennis; hundreds gathered at the Newport Handicap Doubles and people around the world got on court at daybreak and midnight and every hour in between.

The 2015 ITD will be even better. Join in. Showcase your club; energize your members; get on court.

TIPS FROM THE PROFESSIONALS

"Keep Calm and Retrieve"
by Tony Hollins

The number one rule to retrieve effectively is to make sure that you do not panic. Far too often I see a ball hit firmly with cut into the corner provoking a long wild swing from the retriever. I like to look at it this way: if you swing your racquet at a third of the regular swing speed your racquet will stay in the contact zone three times longer tripling your chance of making solid contact. The slower the racquet the longer it stays with the ball.

Combine this theory with early preparation and a solid shoulder turn and you'll be retrieving like Camden Riviere in no time.
