Volume 4 Number 2                                                                                December 1, 2014

Tennis players were on the move in November. Tuxedo, Philadelphia, New York, Newport, London and Scotland were the places to be. Don't worry, though, you don't need a passport or a train ticket to find out what happened and where, as we've got it all covered in this month's edition of Chase the First.

It was a month of firsts, beginning with the U.S. Ladies Open in Tuxedo where former World Champion - Penny Lumley - faced her daughter Tara Lumley in the finals of the singles. Penny prevailed in straight sets and then teamed up with Tara to take the doubles title in a hard-fought match over Amanda Avedissian and Xanthe Ranger. Camden Riviere won his first British Open Singles title and went on to win the Doubles with Tim Chisholm - the first time an American team has won the event.

National League continues on with the Boston/Washington team at the top of the leaderboard. Ivan Ronaldson shares his tips on playing a hazard chase; while the "doctor" gives advice on what to do about those pesky muscle cramps while playing.

Looking for the perfect present for your favorite tennis player? Consider pre-ordering a copy of James Bruce's book - The Neptune Book of Tennis and Rackets  - to be published in February 2015.

Looking ahead, the National Open will be held in Aiken followed by the Whitney Cup in New York. The social event of the season, of course, is the annual USCTA Awards Dinner and Auction in New York on December 12. Always a fun event, this year is extra special as the auction proceeds will go into a new USCTA court development fund earmarked for Charleston Court Tennis. So, make sure to attend and don't forget to bid often and bid high!

Hope to see you at the Dinner...

Until next month...

Sincerely,

Jane Lippincott - Editor

U.S. Court Tennis Association

Happy holidays to all!

The New York Racquet & Tennis Club hosted the 22nd annual Silver Racquet Invitational and New York Open Handicap on November 5-9, 2014. In conjunction with the court tennis, the weekend included an invitational squash doubles tournament, paired doubles racquets, under-35 handicap racquets singles, and the first annual North American Racquets Invitational.

Tennis began in earnest on Wednesday evening for the three flights of NY Open Handicap draws and on Friday afternoon for the Silver Racquet Invitational. Early rounds included high levels of play across the draws filled with new and seasoned players alike. The fields whittled down to the talented and fortunate semifinalists who navigated best the on-court challenges as well as the luring off-court distractions.

U.S. Ladies Open
by DAWSON LANE

The 2014 Ladies US Open kicked off with four round of 16 singles matches on Friday November 7th.  Helen Grassi and Alex Klara were the first match of the championship at high noon with Grassi prevailing in straight sets.  Rackets aficionado Shi-Nan Zhang and Petra Napolitano were next on the docket.  Napolitano was determined to keep her foot on the pedal before Zhang got the hang of the bounces and chases, as her comfort level increased game by game.  Napolitano emerged victorious in straight sets with some fantastic rests enjoyed by the spectators.  Dara Walsh and Sara Hamilton were next up to grace the Tuxedo Club court; with Walsh's experience and controlled play being too much for Hamilton to overcome.  The last round of 16 match paired up two New Englanders; Beth Winthrop from the National Tennis Club and Suzy Schwartz from the Boston Tennis & Racquet Club.  Winthrop got off to a fast start, but Schwartz righted the ship and moved on to the quarter-finals.

Jimmy Dunn
by RCOP

This year's Jimmy Dunn hit record numbers with 25 draws and over 218 matches played starting Thursday at noon and ending Sunday at 6pm. There was record numbers in the squash draws and the tennis as always was sold out 3 weeks in advance with 78 players. The level of tennis this weekend was some of the best quality we have seen for a number of years. The racquets draws saw massive numbers as we added age group categories this year. As well as the Jock Soutar we also had the Tom Price, Murray Sales and Dennis Walsh Cup.

The club was bursting at the seams on the courts, in the bar and in the steam rooms to recover for their next matches. Everyone was in multiple events and found themselves going from one match to another. All matches were very tightly contested in all sports and were played in very fair spirits despite what was on the line.

Most athletes, both amateur and professional, have encountered cramps at some point in their lifetime. They can range from annoying to totally incapacitating. Fortunately, most of the time they are self limiting and resolve enough to continue.

TIPS FROM THE PROFESSIONALS

"Hazard Chase"
by Ivan Ronaldson

What to do when playing off a hazard chase: As the receiver you should be looking for any opportunity to hit a gallery or a low hard force that hits the back wall below the Dedans then shoots along the main wall to chase last/second gallery. Knowing this, the server should be careful to keep their serve tight to the battery wall (giving the receiver a bad angle on the galleries) and not too deep (too deep invites the force). In this situation a slow/short railroad or a drag are both effective. Save your Sidewalls and Piques for another time.
