Volume 3, Number 7                                                                                                                            June  1, 2014

May was a quiet month in the U.S. court tennis world - no USCTA events were scheduled, as many players were busy with their end-of-year club championships. There was one big worldwide event however - the 2014 World Championship - which was played in Melbourne. U.S. fans who could not attend were waking up at 4:30 a.m. to watch the battle between World Champion Rob Fahey and our own U.S. Challenger - Camden Riviere. Fahey won, but not without a fight from Riviere.

Looking forward - summer has arrived and with that the focus turns to Newport. Starting with the U.S. Pro Singles playing for the Schochet Cup, followed by the Newport Handicap Doubles, the Velvet Rope and the Pell Cup - there's a lot happening in the "city by the sea". Make your plans soon for a weekend getaway!

International Tennis Day is on June 20th. Plan to celebrate the day with your friends and players from around the world. For all the details, read on....and make sure to send us your photos for the next issue of Chase the First!

Be sure to read the latest news from Court Tennis Charleston. The committee, led by Greg Van Schaack, has made considerable progress and they are that much closer to building a court at Daniel Island. The goal is achievable if we all help. Find out more about this amazing opportunity and how you can become involved below.

Finally, what do Todd Martin, Paris, being light on your feet and pick-up games have in common? You'll have to read this month's full issue of Chase the First to find out!

Until next month...

Sincerely,

Jane Lippincott - Editor

COURT TENNIS CHARLESTON
by Greg Van Schaack

Court Tennis Charleston is reaching a critical phase in its fundraising and your help and support is needed to accomplish this exciting goal - to build a new court in America!!

The court will be built on the Daniel Island Club's (DIC) land. The DIC is located on Daniel Island, formerly the private plantation of the Guggenheim Family, located in the City of Charleston, 12-15 minutes from downtown. The DIC has 2 golf courses, 10 har-tru tennis courts, 1 grass tennis court, two swimming pools, a gym, a beautiful main club house and many other amenities, including banquet facilities for large parties and balls. Five newly constructed "club cottages" will be available to house visiting players during tournaments or just vacations in Charleston.

The DIC has granted us the option to build our court on their land and to rely on them to operate the court once it is completed. In doing this, the DIC is not only contributing a $350K-valued piece of property for construction of the court, they are also agreeing to operate that court, including all expenses for taxes, maintenance, insurance, climate control, professional staffing, etc. (easily a $100K per year expense). This is a huge boost to our fund raising effort!!!

The project will take place in two-phases, which will be completed concurrently, if funding allows. Phase I will include: a fully fitted air conditioned court tennis court; state of the art lighting; dedans with seating; royal dedans with a fireplace and viewing into the court; the USCTA Hall of Fame (temporary location in the royal dedans); two bathrooms; a kitchenette. The total cost for Phase I is: $1.6 million. Phase II will include: a fully built USCTA Hall of Fame Gallery; men's and women's locker rooms; a pro-shop and receiving area; upper level royal dedans; expanded detailing on the outside of the building. The total cost for Phase II is: $800K.

As of May 31st, we have raised $485K in pledges from roughly 10% of the USCTA membership. Of that, $155K in pledges has come from Charleston based contributors. Both the USCTA and USCTPF Boards will soon have 100% participation. We are hoping to achieve 100% participation from the USCTA membership - no amount is too small! All donations will be made through the USCTPF and therefore will be tax deductible. Gifts of stock can also be accepted. To make a pledge, simply email Greg Van Schaack at: GVS@USCTA.Org.

Upon legal documents being signed, Court Tennis Charleston will contact donors directly to honor their pledges; prior to that, no moneys will be collected.

If you have any questions regarding Court Tennis Charleston, please do not hesitate to contact Greg at the above address.

Thank you in advance for your support! We look forward to hosting you in Charleston!

TIPS FROM THE PROS
Stay light on your feet.
by Ivan Ronaldson

As your opponent is striking the ball, you should have no weight on your heels. When preparing for your own shot, be light on your feet and try and take as many small steps as possible. However, once you have made position, your last pace should be committed and balanced. Far too many club players have to take a step just after their swing, as they are not stable on contact.

RECOGNIZE THIS PLAYER?

Maybe not...but it's none other than Todd Martin - the CEO-designate for the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Martin, who was ranked world No. 4 on the ATP World Tour in the 1990's will take over as CEO from Mark Stenning in September. Stenning has served as CEO for 35 years and has been a great friend to the National Tennis Club (NTC) and court tennis. Stenning was honored at the NTC Annual Dinner where he was presented with a racquet and made a life member of the NTC.

Martin recently got on court at the National Tennis Club. Any bets on what his handicap is today and what it will be with a little practice?

U.S. PRO SINGLES/ SCHOCHET CUP

The US Professional Singles playing for the Schochet Cup is held at The National Tennis Club (Newport, RI). In recent years established itself as the most attended and prestigious US Court Tennis competition in the professional's calendar. The event consistently attracts the world's top professionals who compete to take home both the coveted Schochet Cup and a share of the biggest purse on the professional circuit today. This year promises to be very exciting. Rob Fahey fresh off his successful World Championship defense will certainly have his ability and stamina tested with, Camden Riviere, Steve Virgona, James Stout, Bryn Sayers and Tim Chisholm all lining up, hungry to take the title and to end his dominance.
