Volume 2, Number 11                                                                                                                  October  1, 2013

The 2013/14 season is underway....September is usually a quiet month, but not this year! Players of all levels were busy -both here and across the pond.

The pros kicked off the year with the first of seven National League matches. Then they were off to Paris for the French Open Singles and the World Championship Doubles. Camden Riviere won the singles while Rob Fahey and Steve Virgona teamed up to win their sixth consecutive World Doubles title.

Meanwhile, an army of veteran players, led by USCTA General Greg Van Schaack, marched into Lord's and won the 1812 Cup. Back in the states, Ken Forton organized the successful 5th Annual Lakewood Invitational.

Not to be outgunned by the Americans, Mark Mathias of the UK, claimed the first event on the USCTA calendar by capturing the 2013 Jimmy Knott singles title. The month closed with two more National League matches.

From the US Court Tennis Preservation Foundation - Bill McLaughlin was elected chair of the foundation. In assuming the role, McLaughlin noted the extraordinary accomplishments of retiring chair - Haven Pell.

Read on for all the news and more - including a pro tip on return of serve from the World #1 Player Camden Riviere.

There's plenty to do in October from the juniors in Newport to doubles in Chicago and a gala extravaganza in Boston. Check it out.

Until next month...

Sincerely,

Jane Lippincott - Editor

2013 JIMMY KNOTT
by Jeremy Wintersteen

An amateur singles contest, the Jimmy Knott is traditionally the first tournament of the year and kicks off the USCTA fixture list.  The tournament was formerly known as the Boston A Invitational.  It was renamed after Jimmy Knott passed away the year after he won it.  Due to Boston's roof situation, the tournament has been hosted by the National Tennis Club for the last three years.

Ten players competed in this year's Jimmy Knott in Newport from September 27th-29th.  The first rounds went largely as expected.  In the semifinals, Englishman Mark Mathias defeated Boston's Jeremy Wintersteen 6/4, 6/1.  Mark is playing out of Washington this fall and has been a former Van Alen Cup player.  His home court is Lords but he also plays at Hyde Bridport.  He participated in the British Real Tennis Academy's Development Squad program in 2010/2011.  In the other semifinal, New York's Lex Miron defeated Shawn Herlihy from Boston 6/0, 6/3.

2013 LAKEWOOD INVITATIONAL

For our fifth anniversary, it was a small but rabid group of players.  Nine of us played our favorite game in the "Casino" at Georgian Court.  As I have expounded in the past, this building is just not to be believed.  Besides court tennis, it has a former racquets court (finally being used as a student lounge and not as a random storage area), an indoor polo ring, bowling alleys, a pool, and squash courts.  My favorite part of the court is the bucket built into last gallery for Gould's famous railroad serves (ironic, as his grandfather was a railroad baron).  I mean, why walk all the way back to the dedans to get a ball?

1812 CUP
By Greg Van Schaack
The 1812 was a huge success. For those who don't know, the 1812 is a 50+ years of age handicap doubles, US vs UK that was played for the fourth time in 6 years. The Americans took the fight to British soil and beat the bloody British at Lords in handicap doubles 13 matches to 7. We now lead the series 3 to 1.  Next battle will be in Chicago in 2015!!  The surrender included the traditional singing by the American soldiers of Johnny Horton's great (and only) hit, The Battle of New Orleans - "we fired our guns and the British kep a'commin; there wasn't aye as many as there was a while ago; we fired once more and they began a'runnin on down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico"...........

NATIONAL LEAGUE
NEW ENGLAND VS. TUXEDO/PHILADELPHIA
By Tim Chisholm

New England travels to Tuxedo and emerges with 5/2 victory over Tuxedo/Philadelphia.

A bit of a Tuxedo reunion this past weekend in Tuxedo as former Tuxedo Senior Professional Tony Hollins and former Summer Professional Camden Rivière (and frequent training partner with Chisholm) arrived during the week to practice and visit.

New Tuxedo Professional Josh Dodgson and Hollins took the court first at ~5 pm.  Hollins looked much more comfortable to start the match playing very steady tennis while Dodgson showed a bit of nerves and Hollins took the first set 6/3.  Dodgson settled down at the start of the second, putting a little more pressure on Hollins while cutting down on the errors and won the second set 6/2.  And due to a format change to National League....the third set started at 3/3.  Both players dug their teeth in for the quick race to the finish, with Dodgson winning a few important points to emerge with a 6/4 victory.

NATONAL LEAGUE
NEW ENGLAND VS. CHICAGO
by Jeremy Wintersteen

The second National League match of the 2013/14 season featured a contest between Camden Riviere and Tony Hollins of New England vs. John Lumley and Will Hopton of Chicago.  The match took place on the Saturday of the Jimmy Knott tournament and the combination of National League with a USCTA tournament was a success.

New England won the 2012/13 National League title with Camden winning all his matches at the #1 spot.  With Steve Virgona out with an injury and a handicap differential of over 17 points, spectators anticipated that Camden's streak would continue.  To read the rest of the story, click here.

PRO TIP
"RETURN OF SERVE"
by Camden Riviere

Return of serve is one of the most important parts of court tennis. It is an opportunity for many players to get an advantage in a point. Most players tend to try to force their returns or be "aggressive" with their shot selection.

This changes though when there is a chase being played. Why is it when most players are returning serve and playing off a chase that they choose to cut the ball into the corner? The answer is that it gives them a chance to control the length of their shot to beat the chase. A decent cut shot can also force an error out of your opponent or a weak return, which can be taken advantage of.

So why then don't we use this return when chases are not being played? I believe that this cut shot is the most effective return of serve possible, regardless of the situation. Most players can hit this shot with less difficulty than hitting the dedans, and as we all know most people don't want to try to dig balls out of the corner. If it is effective to use it to beat a chase it will be effective to win a normal point as well! Next time you are playing a match try it out. Imagine you are trying to beat chase 3 on the floor with your returns even on normal points. I think you will find it is a very effective option that can be easily repeated.
