Volume 2, Number 9                                                                                                                     August 1, 2013
Greetings!

Sunny days, warm temperatures, long lazy days...summer is in full swing. And while many are pursuing outdoor activities, there are still more than a few diehards banging the ball around the court tennis court.

Newport hosted the Clothier Cup and the Velvet Rope in July, which are chronicled below. There's one more chance to visit the City-by-the-Sea before the summer ends, by playing in the 2013 Pell Cup Doubles. The entry form is attached, but sign up soon as space is limited!

Now is the time to start planning for the 2013/14 season - it looks like it's going to be a great year. Boston is planning a grand re-opening and Chicago is hosting its first annual invitational. Plus, all the old favorites are back. There's a tournament for players of all levels and ages...so get ready!

To all the court tennis diehards...carry on!

Until next month...

Sincerely,

Jane Lippincott - Editor

2013 CLOTHIER CUP

The players arrived in Newport on July 4th, in time for some team practices, capped off by fireworks over the Newport Harbor. Play began on Friday, with 4 singles matches and continued on Saturday with doubles play. While the Aussies swept all 8 matches, our young U.S. team put up a good fight.

Greg Van Schaack, USCTA President, presented the trophy and medals to the players on Saturday. Van Schaack said that international events like the Clothier Cup are the essence of the game - meeting players from other clubs and countries - and experiencing amateur tennis at its best.

2013 VELVET ROPE

Velvet Rope - Faulise Division

The 2013 Velvet Rope was held in Newport on July 19-20. The doubles tournament attracted a sporty group of players for a weekend of doubles play and parties.  The tournament was organized by Marc Lewinstein and Brian Owens.  A special shout out to Marc...who not only was a tournament organizer, but played a match at 8:30 on Saturday morning and then raced across the bridge to do the Save the Bay Annual 2 mile swim! Word has it that he completed the swim and made it to the Saturday night festivities.

The results of the tennis were:

Wharton Division

Dave Tedeschi & Zach Sacks def. Dillon Aldrich & Brian Owens 6/5, 6/5

Faulise Division

Tom Shumaker & John Olympitis def. Patrick Wood-Prince & John Crawford 6/1, 6/1

NEWS FROM BOSTON
The scaffolding is up in Boston and construction is well underway on the T&R's roof! The project is expected to take approximately 2 1/2 months to complete, so we are hopeful to have the court re-opened by early September. the T&R court renovation will include: placing a new roof on the building, so it will not leak when it rains; scraping and frosting the widows along the side of the court. so that diffused, natural light comes in; sanding and re-finishing the floor, so there is a more smooth and consistent surface.

Thanks to the support of the court tennis community, the USCTA, the USCTPF and the T&R membership, we will have lots to celebrate come fall. The T&R will be hosting a re-opening tournament & gala weekend, October 25-27th. I hope to see you there!
