Greetings!
The veteran players captured the headlines in May as the U.S. hosted the international team championships and the World Masters. The month began with the U.S. 60's and 70's in Newport and then on to Philadelphia and Tuxedo for the Cockram, Bostwick and Danby Cups. Be sure to read Dawson Lane's story on the Bostwick and Danby Cups.
The final stop was New York for the World Masters - singles and doubles events for players 50 and over. Congratulations to John McLean on winning the over 75 singles at the World Masters. McLean was the only U.S. winner, but we had plenty of finalists. Hats off to - Simon Aldrich, Charlie Johnstone, Pete Bostwick , Ralph Howe, Dick Tanfiield and Peter DeSvastich - on making it to the finals. Complete results can be found below.
While the focus was on the veterans, Steve Virgona and Camden Riviere were on the other side of the globe playing in the Australian Open. Virgona captured the singles and doubles titles. Now the focus turns to Newport for the U.S. Professional Singles playing for the Schochet Cup, where many of the top professionals will be competing for the $35,000 purse.
Other events in June include the U.S. Ladies' Open, U.S. Under 21 & Under 18 Juniors and the Newport Handicap Doubles. And, don't forget the USCTA Annual Meeting On June 22 in Newport!
In this month's edition we've also included a short video from Dublin and a great story from Washington on three brothers who walked into Prince's Court. The Pro Tip for the month can be summarized as - check out the U.S. Pro Singles, either in person or through the video broadcast, to see the game played at its highest level. It's a visual lesson.
Finally, Court Tennis or Real Tennis - this is your last chance to vote. Please see the sidebar story for all of the details....voting closes on June 20.
Until next month...

2013 NATIONAL LEAGUE
by Ken Forton
Last week, Tuesday, we saw Team New England take the 2012-2013 championship in the United States National League. Congratulations to Camden Riviere, Tony Hollins, and Rich Smith in their win over Jamie Stout, Barney Tanfield, and Mike Gooding. As you shall see, it was an offbeat night for a variety of reasons.
First, New England swept the evening. To my recollection, I don't think the team has won all three (two singles and one doubles) matches in any of their earlier outings. The domination began with a very serious effort by NTC's head pro Rich Smith over New York's assistant pro Barney Tanfield. In an exciting first set, Smith eked out a win at 6 games to five. This result must have taken the wind out of Tanfield's sails, as Smith won the next set and the match 6-2. This was redemption for Smith, as the last time he was on court in Newport for National League he lost to the Tuxedo/Philly team's Josh Dodgson 6-3, 6-4. That night Rich didn't seem to have his usual sparkle out there; he was frustrated. But at the finals Rich appeared smooth and in control. Kudos to him for his efforts. RTO FORUM
Three Brothers Walk Into a Court Tennis Court and...
Yesterday, 3 brothers arrived at Prince's Court to play in our weekly Mix'n Match. Terrific, we said and plugged them right in. We asked them, as we do with all new players, how they heard of us? Well, they had just attended a performance of Shakespeare's Henry V here in DC and were intrigued with the lines about 'knocking the Dauphin's crown into the hazard' and disturbing him with chases'.So they did their research which led them to us. By the end of the morning , 2 of them were keeping score and the 3rd was in the pro shop learning to sew balls! Remarkable!
One of them is a soldier, another is a med student, and the 3rd writes for The New Republic!

RTO HANDICAP POLICY NOTICE RTO will soon automatically adjust your doubles handicap so that it is no more than 6 points worse than your singles handicap.
Also, there will now be a Doubles Dormancy rule similar to the current Singles Dormancy rule which adjusts your handicap for every 12 months of inactivity.
