Volume  2, Number  5
March 1, 2013

Greetings!

It was another busy month in the court tennis world - with players travelling to Aiken, Chicago, Tuxedo, Philadelphia, Washington and even the UK to get their "tennis fix". The month began with the level championships - well most of them as the Noll Cup in Newport had to be rescheduled thanks to the blizzard Nemo. This resulted in 4 new champions: Rakesh Jasani, Baker Thompson, Chris Bernabei and Chris Hughey. Then it was on to Tuxedo for the 111th Gold Racquet weekend. Bradley Allen won his first Gold Racquet tournament defeating Pat Winthrop, a past winner.  In addition to the singles there was a well-attended doubles tournament. For all the details from Tuxedo, be sure to read the social recap by Lili Neuhauser below. Next month, we'll cover the tennis.

The month ended with the U.S. Amateur Mixed Doubles and the Anne Boleyn Handicap in Philadelphia. Pat Winthrop and Sara Lacombe took top honors in the Mixed, while Ruth Kelley claimed the Anne Boleyn title. Sprinkle in some National League matches and it was a pretty busy month of tennis!

Other features this month include Barney Tanfield's thought-provoking "Tip from the Pros" entitled "Changing Face".  The popular Top 25 list finds Pat Winthrop still in the #1 spot, but lots of changes in the remaining 24. The 2013 Bathurst Cup team has returned home from the UK after a week of well-played but challenging matches and a vow to begin training for the next Bathurst cup in 2015.

Finally, the USCTA Board of Governors would like to hear from you on the topic of Real Tennis vs. Court Tennis. Make your opinion heard and complete the survey today.

That's it for this month, as we "march" into spring; there is plenty of tennis to look forward to!

Until next month...

Sincerely,

Jane Lippincott - Editor

2013 GOLD RACQUET
By Lili Neuhauser

How many players??? Wow, we were heading into a record breaking weekend and Tuxedo was ready to welcome the many players, friends and guests to the Park, we came into the Gold Racquets weekend with great anticipation. Our pro Tim Chisholm was getting a huge response for rackets and court tennis players, in turn we had the phones ringing off the hook for party attendance, we knew we were heading for a big weekend! As we have many new members who were going to experience their first GR, we had to show all attendees a wonderful time, all weekend long!

TIPS FROM THE PROS
CHANGING FACE
by Barney Tanfield

Humans are limited in many aspects.  Things that involve physical constraints such as speed, strength and flexibility are particularly limited, especially over the course of one's playing career.  Life tells us we will inevitably get older and unfortunately, at least somewhat slower (partially depending on how quick one is to start). The balls that one is able to retrieve today may not realistically be retrieved a few years from today. This is quite a difficult realization for many Real Tennis players to face. If one stays the same exact player with the exact same strategy and skills one will inevitably slowly regress. One must think of certain aspects of one's game as constantly declining to appreciate the kinds of measures needed to improve.

2013 BATHURST CUP

Holyport hosted the 2013 Bathurst Cup - a team event between the US, Great Britain, Australia and France. The US team was defeated in the first round by the Australian team. The Australians went on to defeat Great Britain 3/2 in the finals.

The Americans put up a great fight, but lost to the French in the 3-4 playoffs 4/1. Representing the USA was: Jeremy Wintersteen, Ben Cook and Rakesh Jasani. Training has already begun for the 2015 Bathurst competition.

ANNE BOLEYN
Royan, Kinzler & Kelly
The Anne Boleyn Women's Handicap was played in Philadelphia on February 22-24. Eleven players competed with Ruth Kelley taking top honors over Francine Royan. Curious as to why it is called the Anne Boleyn? While Henry VIII was playing tennis, Anne Boleyn was beheaded!
