Greetings!
The professionals took center stage in January as the National Open, US Open and several National League matches were played. Camden Riviere was the one to beat, as he won both the National Open and the US Open Singles and Doubles - with Tim Chisholm. Dacre Stoker and Jim Zug provide all the details below.
A good turn-out of people showed up for Chicago's first official USCTA event - The Etchebaster Cup. Details and draws follow.
This month's "Tips from the Pros" comes from Tuxedo's new assistant - Josh Dodgson - and focuses on patience. Thanks Josh and welcome!
USCTA members should be sure to read the story on the Survey Question - "Should the United States Court Tennis Association change its name to the United States Real Tennis Association?" A link to the survey, e-mailed in January is included. The voting closes on February 19.
The next few months are jam-packed with events so be sure to check out the schedule.
Finally, to all USCTA Facebook friends - remember that you can post in our group. If you are at a tournament and see an amazing point or are watching a great match, share it with the group. Christian Bullitt and Jim Zug, provided us with some great commentary during the US Open - including a photo of the Virgona/Sayers team shoes! The USCTA website will continue to be the official "source" for the game, of course, but for quick breaking news and/or some color, visit our Facebook page.
Until next month...
Sincerely,

2013 US OPEN
Cam is A'Comin'
by James Zug
The past eight days have put an emphatic stamp on the world of tennis: Camden Scott Riviere is back. The ginger-haired southpaw from Aiken won the 61st United States Open on the Van Alen Court at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia. He captured his second Open title without the loss of a set, conceding just seven games in his first three matches and overall a total of fourteen games in twelve sets. In the semis, he demolished the defending champion Bryn Sayers 0, 2 and 1 and in the finals he dismissed his long-time rival Steve Virgona 2, 4 and 1. To read the full story. ..click here |
USCTA SURVEY
In January, all USCTA members received a survey entitled "Should the United States Court Tennis Association change its name to the United States Real Tennis Association?" The voting closes on February 19, 2013. This is an important issue and all current USCTA members should make every effort to vote.
Here's the link to the original survey form.

2013 NATIONAL OPEN
by Dacre Stoker
The members of the Aiken Tennis Club were thrilled to host the National Open January 11-14 and came out in force to watch ten of the top pros based in the US and three top amateurs who rounded out the field. Throughout the weekend we were all treated with warm weather, even by Aiken standards, which proved the incentive for most of our visiting pros to get in a few rounds of golf in between matches. In addition to some casual golf, seven ATC and Palmetto members treated the pros to a wonderful golf outing after the finals on Sunday which concluded with an evening of drinks and heavy hors d'oeuvres at the magnificent Willcox Hotel.

2013 ETCHEBASTER CUP
Chicago hosted its first USCTA tournament - The Etchebaster Cup. Congratulations to Chicago's Martin Kinsella who defeated Washington's John Saxe in the final. The score was 4/6, 6/4, 6/4. In the consolation draw, Graham Bayly defeated Ken Love 8/7.

DO YOU LOVE OUR GAME?
RTO HANDICAP UPDATE RECORD ALL SCORES! RECORD ALL SCORES! RECORD ALL SCORES!
The Handicap & Ranking Committee would like to remind you that if you love the game of court tennis, it is imperative that you record ALL of your played matches to not only ensure the accuracy of your handicap but the overall accuracy of the entire handicap system. For instance, if you plan on entering one of the level championships or handicap based tournaments coming up, then you are ruining it for everyone if your handicap is inaccurate. This is easily avoided if you RECORD ALL SCORES! Each month we will post each club's number of matches entered into RTO in the last 30 days. This will not only act as a monthly reminder to RECORD ALL SCORES but it will also show you how your home club is doing compared to other clubs in the U.S. and to the some of the top clubs in the world. This month, we congratulate Washington and Newport for leading the charge!
Number of matches entered into Real Tennis Online (RTO) in the last 30 days:
Washington 142 Newport 140
Boston 94
Chicago 73
New York 66
Philadelphia 66
Aiken 56
Tuxedo 23
Other clubs for comparison (Royal Tennis Court 304, Radley 284, Cambridge 211, Hobart 210)

TIP ROM THE PROS
by Josh Dodgson
My take on the game is very simple. Too often do you see people of all levels, ages, experience trying to create an outright winner when it's not there to be hit? This game is all about patience and with patience comes reward. Just give it a try. Make your opponent play that extra ball, wait for the easy return i.e. a penthouse or a high back wall and then unleash all that built up aggression into putting the ball away, whether its through heavy cut or sheer pace. You have earned the right to win this point, so make it count! |
