Hello fellow road safety professionals,

I hope everyone is enjoying a safe and prosperous summer. We, as driving school educators and like-minded professionals are dedicated to the common goal of highway safety.  As today's leaders, it is our responsibility to uphold the professional ethics and high standards in Driver Education & Traffic Safety established by those who preceded us, and furthermore, to aspire to even higher standards which can be carried on by those who follow. As present day leaders, it is now time to concentrate our efforts in moving our industry forward.

The Driving School Association of the Americas and the driver education community has the full support of NHTSA
(See the Administrators letter in support of driver ed.)

The State of Delaware just completed a State Driver Education Assessment and I was very excited to be part of the assessment team.  Previous assessments for Maryland, Oregon and Vermont are posted on the NHTSA website. I suggest that you take time to read an assessment to better understand the National Standards.

In March, the DSAA Spring Seminar and Board Meeting was held in New Orleans and was a huge success.  The meetings coincided with the St. Patrick's Day weekend and a great time was enjoyed by all, from the parades to the sights, sounds and dining of the famous French Quarter.  Our Seminar included a full day of excellent speakers brimming with useful information. Thank you again to all the speakers and volunteers who made the day a huge success.

Our Summer Meeting and Seminar is scheduled for Atlantic City, NJ, August 16 and 17th.  Attached is the Agenda for the Seminar.  I hope each and every one of you in the vicinity can make space in your calendar to attend.

Register ONLINE or fax in the registration to 937-290-0696.

Also, November is quickly approaching!

The DSAA Annual Convention is November 7-10 in Savannah, Georgia. The Board meets Wednesday and the Convention officially kicks off Wednesday evening with an opening Reception hosted by our Exhibitors. Presentations and workshops continue right on through Thursday and Friday, to our closing luncheon on Saturday.

I realize it is a great sacrifice to leave your school to attend a seminar or convention, but I can promise and assure you, you will not be disappointed.

As your association, we are working on several projects to promote our industry and raise our standards.  These include:

Updating our website:

Cold facts from a newspaper obituary do not do justice to Agnes.

There had been a pattern over the years for the larger and more successful driving schools.  The man would take care of the instructors, the cars, the maintenance, and the training; the woman would be in the office taking care of the phones, scheduling, the checks, and insuring that there was actually a profit at the end of the day.

Agnes was the first women that the fledgling DSAA encountered who ran the school by herself.  Many took over full control after the death of the husband; but Agnes built Chinook Driving Academy from the ground up with her own skills and with no partner to fall back upon.  She created a large operation which was well-known throughout  Calgary, in Alberta, across Canada, and eventually with the smart people in DSAA who copied and used her programs across North America.

Agnes twice hosted DSAA Board Meetings in Calgary during the world-famous Stampede.  Those who attended still hold onto the white hats we were all awarded, and none could forget the campfires which had to start at 10 PM, even though it wasn't dark yet.  Plus our trips to Lake Louise and the continental divide.

 AgnesOrr

Agnes was a dear friend to many of us in DSAA.  In this picture, you see Agnes (on the left) with Van Adams of Chicago, Tess DeStefano of Philadelphia, and Agnes' daughter Janice.  Agnes, naturally, has that fabulous smile which could brighten up a room.

Agnes often seemed to be in the background, with a small almost girlish voice that seemed to hesitate before speaking.  We were fortunate to listen.  And we were smart enough to give Agnes many of our highest awards. Now we can only give her a memory and a smile.  Link to Guestbook.
