School Superintendent Dr. Renee Foose Shares Her Vision for the Future at a Chamber Luncheon

While the Howard County Public School System excels in the state and the nation by many standardized measurements, Superintendent Renee Foose said there is more to do to make sure students are fully prepared for life after graduation.

At a Howard County Chamber of Commerce luncheon yesterday at Turf Valley, Dr. Foose told nearly 200 business leaders that "my work is directly related to your work. ... I am producing your future workforce."

She talked about the new strategic plan for the school system, Vision 2018, which calls for students to not only learn math, science and history, but to develop the "soft skills" that are crucial for success in the workforce. These include being able to think critically and solve problems, collaborating in teams, being adaptable, communicating effectively, and accessing and analyzing information.

As schools have largely focused on the transactional model of getting students to learn the right answer, she said, public education has "stifled creative thinking and problem solving. ... We are not teaching [students] to ask the right questions."

Dr. Foose was invited to speak as part of the Chamber's series of Member Luncheons that include informative presentations on topics of interest to the business community along with networking opportunities.

Patient First Will X-Ray Halloween Candy on Oct. 31

happy-halloween2.jpgChamber member Patient First wants everyone to enjoy the frightful fun this Halloween by offering free digital X-ray imaging of Halloween candy. Bags of candy may be brought into any Patient First Neighborhood Medical Center from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, October 31, 2013.

An adult should always inspect the candy before allowing a child to enjoy the sweet rewards of their trick-or-treating. This free X-ray offer is an additional precaution parents may consider to possibly detect objects like, glass, metal or plastic. Parents still need to provide supervision since some foreign materials may not appear in X-rays.

There is a Patient First medical center located at 5900 Cedar Lane, Columbia.

Small to medium Maryland companies are invited to attend the Operation Pledge to Vets Conference on November 21 at the Hilton Baltimore BWI Airport to learn how to find critical business skills and qualities needed to ensure a competitive workforce.

Companies interested in hiring and retaining military veterans (including Active National Guard and Reservists) can learn about making the business case from companies who successfully employ veterans. The conference will also cover how to find top veteran talent, expand networking contacts for qualified applicants, navigate the many veteran resources available, and become a "military-friendly" company.
