School Kits for 2015-16 School Year -
SALE ENDS JUNE 19th

The PTA strives to make ordering school kits an easy process for parents ensuring that students arrive at the start of school with the necessary supplies waiting for them at their desks. School kits are on sale now through June 19 through Innisbrook, the same company we used last year. We have worked with teachers to develop supply kit contents with the specific items they feel each student needs for a successful year and this year's supply kits will contain the same quality items as we have had in the past. New this year, the supply kits include the quick word books for 2nd graders, two recorders for 3rd graders, and a customized assignment notebook for grades 3-6. Supply kits will be delivered directly to your child's classroom prior to the start of school.

The 2015-2016 school supply lists will be posted on the Chesterbrook Elementary School website as a shopping guide. If you choose to purchase supplies on your own, the additional required items (which includes a quick word book for 2nd graders, two recorders for 3rd graders, and a customized assignment notebook for grades 3-6) should be purchased during the Open House in September. These items will also be available in the school store during the first few days of school. Headphones and earbuds can be purchased at a local store or brought from home.

If you have any questions, please email Amy Schomer.

Remember to Clip and Save Those Box Tops for Education

When you are packing snacks this summer, don't forget to clip and save Box Tops for Education. The next submission deadline will arrive soon after school gets rolling in the fall.

Collecting box tops is so easy! All you need to do is cut out the Box Tops coupons found on General Mills products, put them in a zip-top bag, and save them until fall at which time we'll collect them at school. Ask your neighbors and friends if they can collect the coupons for us too. Any little bit helps as each coupon is worth 10 cents to Chesterbrook.

If you have any questions, please contact Melissa House at houseofhouse@gmail.com.
Field Day - Friday, June 12th - RESCHEDULED

4th - 6th Grade:  9:00 am - 11:00 am
1st - 3rd Grade: 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

The Chesterbrook faculty would like to formally invite all to attend our annual Field Day on June 5th. The day is filled with fun activities for grades 1st - 6th. Kinders will have Kinder Olympics another date and will not be participating in Field Day.

EVENT VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED for field day stations. Volunteers will be grouped with other volunteers and instructions for events will be provided on Friday morning at 8:30 am for 4th - 6th and 12:00 pm for 1st - 3rd. Volunteers must be able to run the event from start to finish in either the morning or afternoon sessions. If you are interested please sign up at  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/field44. Once all positions are filled, the remaining volunteers will be asked to stay with their children's classroom teacher and aid with class management and organization or just to cheer on your kids.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO PACK PROPER ATTIRE. Sunscreen and water bottles are recommended. Most of the Field Day activities are held outside. Water coolers will be placed at first aid stations and around activity stations. Students are encouraged to bring water bottles to help minimize the use of paper cups.

2015-16 Family Directory

The directory is an invaluable resource used regularly by families, faculty and staff. It is filled with so much great material. It's proven to be a life saver when you need faculty and/or student contact information, important school dates, class rosters and much more, all in one place!

We will be working with AtoZ Directories again next year to help produce our directory. If you are interested in promoting a business in next year's directory, please contact AtoZ Directories at info@atozdirectories.com for more information.

If your family enrolled at Chesterbrook since the directory was published in the fall or your family's contact information has changed, please email directory@chesterbrookpta.org.

Your family's information can be added or updated in the electronic directory throughout the year.
Future of Our Schools Event

Please join the Churchill Road Elementary School (CRS) PTA in discussing the future of our schools with special guests Virginia State Delegate (34th district) Kathleen Murphy and Fairfax County Supervisor John Foust (Dranesville district) at the monthly morning coffee meeting at CRS at 8:30 AM on Wednesday, June 10th.  We will ask both speakers to address issues affecting our schools, including FCPS's forecast of a $100 million deficit in FY 2017, increasing Virginia funding to FCPS, and what we can do to help ensure that our schools are adequately funded.

Please register at the following website: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4cafaa2daa8-610 no later than Tuesday, June 9th at noon if at all possible (however, registration for the event is not mandatory for attendance). If you have questions for Delegate Murphy or Supervisor Foust, please write them in the comment section on the website or email them to Maddy Ellis at maddyfainellis@yahoo.com by Monday, June 8th. As their time may be limited, we would prefer to let them know your questions in advance.  All FCPS parents are welcome to attend!

Churchill Road Elementary School is located at 7100 Churchill Road in McLean, VA.

Your Chesterbrook Donations at Work

Thanks to your generosity, the PTA has been able to make some capital expenditures to enhance our school.

Our whiteboard refurbishment project, announced last year, was recently completed with 15 classrooms receiving new whiteboards to replace the 15-year-old boards that had become worn. At the June PTA meeting, members voted to allocate an additional $15,000 to continue the project in other classrooms.

At the May PTA meeting, members voted to allocate $25,000 for the purchase of new cafeteria tables and chairs. The tables will be more sanitary and easier to move and the chairs will be easier to stack.  The tables will feature a gray laminate with a blue border and the chairs will be a matching Chesterbrook blue.

In addition to the new tables and chairs, the cafeteria will soon see enhanced trash and recycling receptacles as well as storage cabinets under the windows.

You will also see new benches and chairs in the area across from the media center that will allow for extra seating for parents and for additional small group instruction. The benches will have light wood and blue fabric. The tables will be light wood as well.

The PTA is grateful for your continued generosity and support of our Chesterbrook school community!

Thank You PTA Volunteers!

Thanks to all of the PTA volunteers and officers who have made serving as PTA president such a pleasure! Your hard work and dedication to our school community helps make Chesterbrook such a wonderful school and place for our children to grow and learn. I have tried to thank as many committee chairs as possible in this section and apologize if any names have been forgotten (such as Rachel Farrell for her work writing thank you notes to Friends of Chesterbrook donors).

I move on with my boys to Longfellow MS and McLean HS knowing the PTA will continue to thrive and serve in the finest Chipmunk tradition! I am grateful to have been part of such a fine organization of volunteers.  - Elizabeth Hale, Immediate Past PTA President

Congratulations Principal Fuqua!

Congratulations to Principal Bob Fuqua as he finishes his term as chairman of the Fairfax Association of Elementary School Principals!  He has worked hard this year with this organization that provides support for elementary school principals and assistant principals through meetings to discuss issues, develop positions, and provide professional development.  We are proud of you!

Congratulations Chipmunks!

Governor Terry McAuliffe and the state Board of Education announced recently that Chesterbrook Elementary School was one of 252 schools who earned the 2015 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) awards for advanced learning and achievement. The VIP incentive program recognizes schools and divisions that exceed state and federal accountability standards and achieve excellence goals established by the governor and the board. Chesterbrook was recognized with an Excellence Award! Thanks to our administrators and teachers for their leadership and stewardship of our children.

"These schools and divisions are laboratories for innovation that are preparing young Virginians to compete and succeed in a new Virginia economy," Governor McAuliffe said. "I congratulate the students, teachers, principals, and communities whose efforts have turned their schools into leaders in training the workforce of the future."
