pasta-salad-meal.jpgCalling All Italian Food Lovers!

Chesterbrook PTA is having a Restaurant Night Fundraiser at Pulcinella TONIGHT from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm.

This is a great opportunity to meet other Chesterbrook Families, enjoy a delicious meal, and support your PTA.

Here are a few details about the event:
- All carry-out orders must be placed by phone.
- You may place your carry-out orders starting at 4:45 pm.
- Restaurant opens for dine-in at 5 pm.
- Pulcinella is located at 6852 Old Dominion Drive in Downtown McLean.
- Pulcinella has gluten-free pasta.

We know that last year's event was not perfect, however the restaurant ownership has assured us that they will be better prepared and this year's event will run smoothly.

Last year's Restaurant Night raised several thousand dollars. We are thankful for the support of HBC Realty Group and Pulcinella for this event.

We look forward to seeing you and your family at Restaurant Night!
Walk to School Day
Walk to School Day is Tomorrow!

Walk to school day is tomorrow, October 8, marking the 5th time Chesterbrook Elementary will celebrate this day! Last year our school had 257 students make the journey on foot or by bike! We look forward to increasing the number of participants and spreading the message about the benefits of walking.

Why Walk? Walking is great low-intensity physical activity. Reduction of traffic helps with congestion on the road and pollution. Plus, sharing time with your community and family members is a lot of fun!

We hope you will join us!

Cultural Diversity Committee Meeting

The Chesterbrook PTA's Cultural Diversity Committee will hold its second meeting this Friday, October 10, from  9:30 am to 11:30 am. Please contact liaison Fenny Hurwitz at fenny@hotmail.co.jp for location information and details. We hope you can join the group for a fun morning.
After-School Spanish Classes

Does your child want to learn Spanish? Then sign up for the fall FLEX Spanish class. Students in grades 1-3 can enroll in the program to receive weekly after-school language lessons for 10 weeks. Spaces still are available! Register by October 15. Classes begin October 21.
BINGO!

Join us October 17 for the first Family Fun Night event of the year: Bingo Night! We will be in the cafeteria from 6:30 pm until 8 pm, or whenever the prizes run out! And there will be plenty of great prizes, as well as snacks and lots of good old-fashioned fun!  Parents must accompany their children since this is not a drop off event.

If you want to help out or have any questions about Family Fun Night events, please contact Megan Dennis at mvdennis@msn.com.
Become a Chesterbrook Friend

We invite all Chesterbrook families to participate in our "Friends of Chesterbrook" armchair fundraiser.

The Friends program is one of Chesterbrook PTA's primary means to support critical student, school, and enrichment needs. We ask for everyone's support of $100 per family to reach our goal, but your gift of any size is appreciated.

There are two easy ways to give:

1. You can donate online through the PTA website.

2. You can donate by check. Please make checks payable to "Chesterbrook PTA" and forward to school via backpack mail or mail directly to Chesterbrook PTA, 1753 Kirby Road, McLean, VA 22101.

We also can help determine whether your company participates in a program to match employee donations. Businesses that donate $500 to our "Business Friends of Chesterbrook" program are recognized on our website and in other ways at school.

Questions? Contact Lori Boerner or Amanda Abraham at friends@chesterbrookpta.org.
Directory Updates Needed ASAP!

The 2014-15 PTA School Directory will go to print soon, so please verify your family information in the directory database immediately or you risk not being included in this year's directory. We're getting close to preparing it for the printer so please look back at your email and pull up the one from chesterbrook@schooldirectoryupdate.com for instructions on how to verify your family's data. If you're new to Chesterbrook or need general help, email us at directory@chesterbrookpta.org right away. Thank you for continued help with the directory!

Book Worm
Pre-order Your Copy of Diary of a Wimpy Kid #9

The latest installment in the hugely popular Diary of a Wimpy Kid series (Book #9, The Long Haul) will be released November 4, but parents can pre-order a copy through the school. Order forms will come home in this week's Thursday folder and are due back by October 17. Students will receive their books in their classrooms on November 5.

Then mark you calendars for the fall Book Fair November 7 through November 14. As always, there will be a wide selection of new and classic books for all ages as well as games and other gift items. It's a great time to shop for holiday gifts and books to read during winter break. More information will come home in Thursday folders beginning October 27.
PTA Meeting and Principal's Coffee

Join us for the next PTA meeting and Principal's Coffee on Wednesday, October 22. The PTA meeting will begin at 8:45 am in the cafeteria and then Kurt Kohls, Chesterbrook's technology specialist, will provide a presentation about the use of technology at our school. Please join us!
Clip Those Box Tops for Education

Congratulations Chesterbrook Elementary! Your Box Tops for Education submissions for 2013-14 earned our school $1,064! Let's see if this year we can earn even more! Ask your neighbors and friends if they can collect the coupons for us. Any little bit helps as each coupon is worth 10 cents to Chesterbrook.

Collecting Box Tops is so easy. All you need to do is cut out the Box Tops coupons found on General Mills products, put them in a baggie, and have your child drop them off in the "Box Tops for Education" container across from the school Media Center. The deadline for 2014 is Friday, October 24.

If you have a 6th grader, middle schooler, or high school student who needs community service hours, we can put them to work. We need help trimming and counting the coupons. If you are interested, please contact Susie French at thefrenchfamilyfive@gmail.com.
American Music Concert

The fourth- and sixth-grade students will present an American Music Concert in the Chesterbrook cafeteria on October 29. The grades will perform together at 2 pm. That evening, the fourth grade will perform again at 7 pm and the sixth grade will perform at 7:45 pm.

Free Homework Workshop for Parents

Ms. Dolin is a former Fairfax County public school teacher, founder of Educational Connections, and a frequent speaker on educational and parenting issues.

This presentation is sponsored by the Chesterbrook PTA and will begin immediately following the PTA's 6:30 pm meeting. The presentation is free, but registration is required. Reserve your spot today!
Longfellow Middle School's Trivia Night

Show off what your know, or maybe just what you think you know, this Friday, October 10, at Longfellow's Family Trivia Night. The fun will begin at 7:00 pm in the school's Lecture Hall. This fun-filled night, hosted by the school's Quiz Bowl Club, is a great opportunity to test your knowledge of history, politics, pop culture, literature, music, geography, and more. Your team (of up to five people) will compete not just for bragging rights, but actual prizes! Bring your family and friends to create one or more teams.  If you don't have a complete team, you still are welcome and the Quiz Bowl club members will match you up with other guests. The entry cost at the door is $5 per person. Pizza, drinks, and baked goods will be available for sale.

The LMS Quiz Bowl team competes at both the regional and national level and this event serves as the club's major fundraiser.

Volunteers Needed for Liaison to Vinson Hall

The PTA would like to establish a committee to strengthen our ties with our Vinson Hall neighbors next door. This committee would meet with the community leadership on ways to increase communication and even look for volunteer opportunities. A military background is not necessary but could help. Please contact Elizabeth Hale at president@chesterbrookpta.org if you are interested.

Cast Your Vote

Every year, Virginia's local PTA units approve a legislation program that represents the state organization's official position on a wide variety of issues affecting children and youth. The program consists of legislative action items and policy statements that the Virginia PTA then advocates with state policymakers. Click here for more information and to download a form to cast your vote. You can submit your ballot to the PTA through backpack mail.
