FAQs

Question: I think my son's winter coat went missing during that last bit of snow. I've checked the lost and found, but no luck. Any other ideas?

Answer:  Yes! In addition to the Lost and Found in the cafeteria, which is overflowing with some very nice items (North Face, Polo, and Columbia jackets; lunch boxes; gloves; a random shoe here and there), there is a growing mound of sweatshirts and jackets on the playground. They are wet and muddy, but a certain Digest editor has recovered several items from the pile in recent years and gotten nearly all the stains out (laundry advice next week)! There are also a few items on the table in the hallway right outside the gym. You might also ask your bus driver, as your Digest editor's other child seems to leave hats and jackets on the bus.

Good luck! All unclaimed items will be donated to various charities at the end of the year.

National Bike to School Day
Weather Permitting...Chesterbrook will be hosting Walk/Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 7th. Walk/Bike to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community. Students are encouraged to bike or walk to school that day (where it is safe to do so). Parents are encouraged to accompany their children to school, and to work with their school to assemble bike trains or walking groups for the event. Please remember that students should:
  • Wear a helmut if biking!!
  • Be accompanied by an adult.
  • Be careful crossing streets.
  • Use proper traffic signals for safety

Have You Thanked a Teacher this Week?
Teacher Appreciation Week continues all week!  During the week, each class will recognize their homeroom teacher as well as another staff person or two who helps to make the Chesterbrook community a wonderful place for our children. Don't forget the rest of the week's activities:

Wednesday, May 7 - Mr. Fuqua provides lunch for teachers
Thursday, May 8 - Children bring flowers for the teachers
Friday, May 9 - Classrooms provide lunch for the teachers
PTA Meeting to Elect Officers for 2014-15
We will hold a brief PTA Meeting in the cafeteria just before the Band Concert on Tuesday, June 3 at 7:00 p.m. to elect officers for next year. We are excited to present for election: Elizabeth Hale, President; Wendy Cumberland, our new President-Elect office; Kat Kehoe, VP of Fundraising; Jennifer Ruggiero, Secretary; and Lavina Colaco, Treasurer.  Click here to read more about Elizabeth, Wendy, Kat, Jennifer and Lavina.

Many thanks to Kate Garcia, President; Maryam Redjaee, VP for Membership; Elizabeth Hale, VP for Fundraising; Kathleen Weil, Secretary; Delia Swigart, Treasurer; and Laurie Plishker, Immediate Past President for their work on the PTA Executive Committee this year. Maryam will continue in her office next year and Kate will transition to a new role.

PTA Volunteers Still Needed for 2014-15
We still need to fill some positions for the 2014-2015 school year and we have volunteer opportunities to fit every schedule -- from just a few discrete hours to more routine involvement:
  • Back to School Folder Coordinator
  • Spring Art Sale
  • School Kit Delivery Chair (much easier than in the past - would be mostly organizing a sign up genius and being available on August 26th for the delivery)
  • Summer Quest Parent Chair (working with Ms. Sweet and Kurt Kohls on organizing summer quest)
  • Parent Directory Asst. Chair
  • Grocery Card Asst. Chair
  • Terracycle Chair (collecting chip and Capri Sun packets for recycling)
  • Restaurant Night Coordinator (organizing 2-3 nights per year)

PLEASE consider getting involved in our PTA.  It is a great way to meet other parents and help our school community.  Contact nominating@chesterbrookpta.org if you are interested.

Just call Naked Pizza in McLean and order take out or delivery from Monday, May 12 through Monday, May 26 and mention "Chesterbrook" when you order.  Our PTA receives 20% of your total order!  Details will be in the Thursday folders as well.
Naked Pizza is located at 1363 Chain Bridge Rd.  703-760-0010.
Order School Supply Kits Now Through June 20!
pencils.jpgThe Chesterbrook PTA has decided to work with an outside vendor for school kits this year.  We are following the advice of our volunteers and other area elementary PTAs, who recommend using a more streamlined system for parents and teachers. After consulting with several school kit vendors, we decided to use Innisbrook, a company based in North Carolina with local support.  As in the past, we have worked with teachers to develop supply kit contents with the exact items they'd like to see in the kits. Kits will be delivered to the school prior to the start of the year. Kits will not be available on the PTA website, nor will they be sold during the summer or just prior to the start of school. We will still offer 3rd-6th grade assignment books.

Read more information and our FAQs.

Click here to order your kits, 3rd-6th grade assignment books (required), 2nd grade Quick Word Book, and 2 recorders for 3rd graders (and 4th-6th graders if you don't have 2).
If you have any questions, please email Elizabeth Hale.
Attention Rising Kindergarten Parents
We have several parent representatives (Lavina Colaco, Jessi Hart, and Kristen Loschert) who are planning playground play dates over the summer for rising kindergartners and their families to meet others. They will all be at the Chesterbrook playground. Remember that bathrooms will be locked, so plan ahead

July 9 - 3:30 - 5 pm
July 26 - 9:30 - 11 am
August 15 - 9:30  - 11 am

Send an email to kinders@chesterbrookpta.org to get on the mailing list for information and to ask any questions of these seasoned experts!
Friends of Chesterbrook
Thank you to all the Family Friends who have donated this year! We are almost at our goal, but need a few more families to join. With the Online Auction on hiatus this year, our Family Friends Program is one of Chesterbrook PTA's primary means to support important academic and school support needs.

We ask for everyone's support of $100 per family to reach our goal, but your gift of any size is appreciated. Check out all our donors so far! We can also help determine whether your company participates in a program to match employee donations. With the Online Auction on hiatus this year, this is one of Chesterbrook PTA's primary means to support important academic and school support needs.

Businesses that donate $500 to our "Business Friends of Chesterbrook" program will be recognized on our website, on these emails (see left sidebar), and in other ways at school. For more information visit our website and click on the "Become a Business Friend" tab.

There are two easy ways to give:
  • You can donate online on our website: Family Friends or Business Friends.
  • You can donate by check. Please make checks payable to "Chesterbrook PTA" and forward to school via backpack mail or mail it directly to Chesterbrook PTA, 1753 Kirby Road, McLean, VA 22101.
Contact Trisha Downey or Amanda Abraham with any questions.
Family Directory
If your family enrolled at Chesterbrook since the directory was published in October - or your family's contact information has changed - please email directory@chesterbrookpta.org. Your family's information can be added or updated in the electronic directory throughout the year.directory@chesterbrookpta.org.

We will be working with AtoZ Directories again next year to help produce our directory. If you are interested in promoting a business in next year's directory, please contact AtoZ Directories at info@atozdirectories.com or click here for more information.
