FAQs
Question: I would like to be more involved at Chesterbrook. Are there any open spots on the PTA for the next school year?

Answer: We can ALWAYS use volunteers! Just come to a meeting (maybe Tuesday morning at 8:45?) or contact nominating@chesterbrookpta.org. Currently, we are in need of the following for next year:
  • Secretary (the smallest Officer position)
  • Newsletter/Constant Contact Editor (this!)
  • Family Fun Events CoChair
  • Hospitality CoChair
  • School Supply Kit Delivery Coordinator (a small job, much simpler for this year!)
  • Spring Art Project Sale
  • Library Volunteer Coordinator
  • Clinic Aid Substitute Coordinator (no nursing experience necessary)

Beyond PTA-related jobs, all grades can use volunteers for REACH activities, which take place for 40 minute slots throughout the day and week, depending on grade level. Our teachers can always use extra hands during this time; just be sure to let them know you plan to come, so they can have something prepared for you. This is a great way to get to know your teachers, other students, and the curriculum. You do not need to assist for your grade levels, so you can find a schedule that suits you!

Rising K Orientation
Orientation for parents of 2014-2015 Rising Kindergarten students is Tuesday, March 11, 7-8 pm in the school's cafeteria. This parent information meeting will provide an overview of the kindergarten curriculum and help prepare parents of kindergartners for this new chapter in their child's life. Please let your neighbors know about the event!

We also have several parent representatives who are planning playground play dates over the summer for rising kindergartners and their families to meet others. Send an email to kinders@chesterbrookpta.org to get on the mailing list for information and to ask any questions of these seasoned experts!
Activity Registration
Several of the popular activities sponsored by the PTA will start spring sessions in March and April, and we are offering a couple new activities as well. Before school we will offer Fitness Warriors, and after school we will offer Drama, Electronic Magazine, Science Enrichment by Ideaventions, and Zumba for Kids.

Registration for most activities will begin this Tuesday, March 11th at 7pm on the PTA website. Details on all the classes can be found on the website and on flyers sent home in the Thursday folders.  We've highlighted the new additions for you here!
  • Science enrichment will offer a new Monday after school session for girls in grades 5-6 called Spa Science.
  • There will NOT be a lottery for any of the science enrichment sessions this spring.  Registration will run on a first-come, first-served basis.

Friends of Chesterbrook
Thank you to all the Family Friends who have donated this year! We are almost at our goal, but need 25 more families to join. With the Online Auction on hiatus this year, our Family Friends Program is one of Chesterbrook PTA's primary means to support important academic and school support needs.
We ask for everyone's support of $100 per family to reach our goal, but your gift of any size is appreciated. Check out all our donors so far! We can also help determine whether your company participates in a program to match employee donations. With the Online Auction on hiatus this year, this is one of Chesterbrook PTA's primary means to support important academic and school support needs.

Businesses that donate $500 to our "Business Friends of Chesterbrook" program will be recognized on our website, on these emails (see left sidebar), and in other ways at school. For more information visit our website and click on the "Become a Business Friend" tab.

There are two easy ways to give:
  • You can donate online on our website: Family Friends or Business Friends.
  • You can donate by check. Please make checks payable to "Chesterbrook PTA" and forward to school via backpack mail or mail it directly to Chesterbrook PTA, 1753 Kirby Road, McLean, VA 22101.
Contact Trisha Downey or Amanda Abraham with any questions.
Family Science Night
We've rescheduled Eric Energy for Friday, May 9, 6:45 pm.  Eric Energy brings scientific concepts to young audiences through live, interactive, hands-on science shows.  Please arrive at 6:30 for a 6:45pm start.  It's a one hour show.  This is not a drop off event.  For more information you can check out Eric Energy's website  or email Joy Molony.
Library Volunteers Needed

The library is still in desperate need of volunteers to help shelve books. We only have 3 regular shelvers for 9 shifts per week. With over 600 students, there are hundreds of library books returned each day. It's a great way to find new books for your children and see what everyone else is reading. You can come in any time during your scheduled period.

If you haven't volunteered in the library yet, please contact Robin Birchfield to set up a quick tutorial session. Please sign up for as many slots as you can using this Sign Up Genius. Thanks to all the great volunteers who have helped so much this year!
Summer Quest 2014
SummerQuest With all of the snow days and delays, we are a bit behind in working with our teachers to nail down the final details and scheduling. We appreciate your patience and understand you need the information yesterday!  Camps will run in week-long sessions July 7 - August 1 with offerings for rising kindergartners through rising 7th graders. We'll be doing morning, afternoon, and after camp care. You can get an idea of about the policies and range of classes from last year's program.
FCPS Summer Camps
Registration is now open for the following Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) summer camps: Institute for the Arts (IFTA), Elementary Institute for the Arts (E-IFTA), STEM Camp, Tech Adventure Camp, and the new Robinson Extended Day Adult and Community Education (ACE) Enrichment programs. General information and links to individual programs and registration are available online. Transportation is included in the tuition for all four camps. Discounted tuition is available for IFTA, E-IFTA, STEM Camp, and Tech Adventure Camp through April 4.
