Chesterbrook PTA Digest
No.20, June 17, 2013
Dear Chesterbrook Families,
Thanks so much for your time, energy and financial support this year. It has been a great year at Chesterbrook! Please check out these last few thoughts which include information about year end, summer and start up activities for next fall. As a reminder, the Chesterbrook PTA will sell school supply kits online in July and August, but not at the Open House.
Congratulations to our new PTA officers: President Kate Garcia, VP Fundraising Elizabeth Hale, and Secretary Kathleen Weil who were elected as officers at the June 12th PTA Meeting. They along with Treasurer Delia Swigart,VP Membership Maryam Redjaee, and Past President Laurie Plishker will be leading the PTA through the next year.
And, we extend a special thank you to our outgoing VP of Fundraising, Julia Nelson. She is quite an amazing person and has overseen the PTA Fundraising for TWO very successful years and the amazing Auction for FOUR years. During her time as VP of Fundraising, Julia started the popular Homemade Pizza Nights fundraiser. In addition, the very successful, Friends Program, was created by Julia and her husband, Bob, several years ago as a way to encourage financial support from businesses and families. Julia has volunteered for every volunteer activity at Chesterbrook and always lends a hand where needed. Julia is a very thoughtful person. She has excellent insights and suggestions and is very organized. Thanks for all you've done for Chesterbrook Julia!
I hope everyone has a happy & safe summer!
Beth Mahood, Outgoing President, Chesterbrook PTA
P.S. If you're interested in getting more involved at the school next year, we'd love to help you figure out the right spot! You can get more information by emailing nominating@chesterbrookpta.org.

Hats Off to Gina Manning! |
In the last few weeks, we've written about a few outgoing PTA volunteers whose youngest children are moving on to Longfellow next year. Although there are many people who have contributed in big ways at Chesterbrook, there's one more person who stands out so much we'd like to call attention to her now. Those who know her are thinking you must be talking about the lovely Gina Manning whose organization skills, energy, wit and enthusiasm has permeated the Chesterbrook PTA.
The Manning Family joined the Chesterbrook community six years ago when their daughter, Stephanie, started first grade at Chesterbrook. As an entering parent, Gina volunteered to serve as yearbook editor, a position previously managed by Chesterbrook staff. The 2007-2008 yearbook she produced was beautiful, but also amazing because Gina was the entire yearbook staff! This past year, the yearbook committee had eight people. That giant assignment did not put off Gina. She has continued to be actively involved at Chesterbrook in a variety of areas both in the classroom (four years as a Room Parent and Committee Chair for Greco and Colonial Days) and as a PTA Executive Board Member (two years as VP of Membership and two years as a Fun Fair and Auction committee chair).
For the last two years, Gina has served as Co-Editor of the Digest PLUS, where in addition to editorial duties she has written numerous articles about Chesterbrook programs. If a catchy headline has grabbed your attention, chances are Gina wrote it. If you've noticed the beautiful and ever changing student artwork displayed in the Chesterbrook hallways, you should thank Gina! A few years ago, she sought out ways that parents could assist the art teachers and now organizes a team of parents who help change out the student art work on a quarterly basis. Gina's thoughtfulness, creative approach and incredible organizational skills will be sorely missed at Chesterbrook!!

Share of McLean Honors Chesterbrook ES
|
At the June 12th PTA Meeting, Hunter Pollitt of Share of McLean, presented Chesterbrook with a Certificate of Appreciation for donating more than 1,500 pounds of food to its food pantry this year. Also in the photo are Kathleen Weil, founder of Food Bus, LLC and organizer of Chesterbrook's weekly deliveries to the food pantry; Principal, Bob Fuqua and Outgoing President, Beth Mahood. At the presentation, Hunter thanked the Chesterbrook community for their generous support this year. Share is a nonprofit corporation which provides emergency assistance to the less fortunate in McLean and has no paid employees. Their programs include family emergency financial assistance; distribution of food, used clothing; recycled furniture; and transportation services for seniors. Hunter advised that they provide assistance to 800 families per week. Click here if you're interested in learning more about Share, making a financial donation, or donating food, clothes or other materials, or volunteering. They especially need donations during the summer! |
Still Planning Your Summer? Check out Summer Quest
|
It's not too late! Registration for our 2013 Summer Quest camp program continues until the week before camps begin, but space is getting limited!! Camps that still have space can be found on our website. Summer Quest will be held over 4 one-week sessions beginning July 8, 15, 22, and 29, with morning and afternoon sessions and an after-care program. The Program Guide includes descriptions of all camps. We also have Matrix that shows classes by week and age group. (Note that these guides still show full and cancelled classes.)
Because of construction work at Chesterbrook this summer, Summer Quest will be held at Haycock Elementary School at 6616 Haycock Rd, Falls Church, Virginia. It is the same Summer Quest program you've enjoyed the past few summers taught primarily by Chesterbrook Elementary teachers....only the location has changed and by less than 2 miles!
