Question: What happens to the uneaten food which is collected at lunchtime?
Answer: Great question! The food is stored in the cafeteria refrigerator. At the end of the week, a volunteer picks up the food and delivers it to Share of McLean. Did you know that Chesterbrook has donated almost a ton of food this year? This year's Schoolwide Photo commemorates the great work Chesterbrook students have done this year to help stock this local food pantry.

Walk/Bike to School Day - POSTPONED TO May 10th
|
Join the Chesterbrook Elementary School Community as we dedicate a day to walking or biking to school with our children this Friday, May 10th (postponed from May 8th due to expected inclement weather). This is not a kids only event. An adult chaperone must accompany kids to keep them safe on their route to school. If it is safe and feasible for you to join us, we hope you can!
Your child can wear the LED flasher promoting safety awareness that was sent home in the May 2nd Thursday envelope. Bikers should park bikes at the rack near the kiss and ride loop (the new bike rack slated for the other side of the school won't be installed in time for this event).
Connect-McLean will have a table in front of the school. Please stop by to find out more about their work to make it safer for the community to to travel by foot on Kirby and Chesterbrook Roads. Find out how you can get a Connect-Mclean lawn sign to put in front of your house!

Inquiring Minds Wanted to Know!

By: Joy Molony
Chesterbrook hosted a fantastic Museum Without Walls Mobile Labs Family Science Night last Friday, May 3rd. The Museum without Walls, created by The Children's Science Center, engages children in hands-on activities demonstrating scientific principles. Chesterbrook families learned about renewable wind energy, chemical reactions, engineering and flight.
The exposure of children to science at a young age can encourage their curiosity. Fossils were made using clay and plaster of paris, and bubbles were used to learn about the law of physics. By making slime, which was an incredibly popular station, the children learned about polymers without even realizing it. Polymers, for those of you not familiar with the term, have the qualities of both a solid and a liquid, and examples include plastic soda bottles, gum, rubber bands and Jello-O. Space landers built using marshmallows and tooth picks taught about shock absorbers. How to power preassembled cars using balloons demonstrated laws of motion first compiled by Sir Isaac Newton. Another station demonstrated why leaves change color, and salt water was used to explain density to the children.

Help the Cafeteria Lose Weight--Reclaim Lost Clothes!!
| Chesterbrook's Lost and Found Cubby in the cafeteria is overflowing! Next time you are at Chesterbrook, please stop by the cafeteria and check the rolling closet to see if there is something in there with your child's name on it. Please try to go through in a tidy manner as Chesterbrook's wonderful Instructional Aide, Anne Oudemans, went through the onerous task of organizing and folding all the items. Soon unclaimed items will be donated to a local charity. There is also a Lost & Found area for smaller items, located at the front office. There are even a pair of boots (see lower left hand corner of photo).

Order your Yearbook - Don't be left out!
| Yearbooks: Order Soon to Avoid Disappointment in June! Orders for Chesterbrook's yearbook are still being taken. The cost is $20. Please make checks payable to Chesterbrook Elementary. Extra order forms are available in the school office. Questions can be directed to yearbook@chesterbrookpta.org.
If you are interested in serving as Yearbook Chair next year (or finding out what's involved), please email yearbook@chesterbrookpta.org. This year's team is wrapping up their work in the next two weeks so next year's chair could get a sneak peek at how it's done. It is a fun job which oversees yearbook production, including photography, orders and publicity, and the art contest. |
Summer Quest 2013
|
Registration for our 2013 Summer Quest camp program has begun!! Summer Quest will be held over 4 1-week sessions beginning July 8, 15, 22, and 29, with morning and afternoon sessions and an after-care program. The Program Guide includes descriptions of all camps. We also have Matrix that shows classes by week and age group.
Because of construction work at Chesterbrook this summer, Summer Quest will be held at Haycock Elementary School at 6616 Haycock Rd, Falls Church, Virginia. It is the same Summer Quest program you've enjoyed the past few summers taught primarily by Chesterbrook Elementary teachers....only the location has changed and by less than 2 miles!
For all the details, see the PTA Website. Questions? Contact summerquest@chesterbrookpta.org.

Field Day Coming June 7 | Mark your calendar for Chesterbrook Elementary School's Field Day on June 7th. This is an annual event that is fun for everyone but requires a lot of volunteers to make it a success. Please be on the look-out for a Sign-up Genius coming soon and sign up to volunteer and support all of our athletes. And, our Kindergarteners won't miss out on all the fun -- they will have their own Olympics on June 13.
