scienceFamily Fun Science Night, May 3rd
On the evening of Friday, May 3rd, your family will have the chance to attend a FREE science learning and family bonding event! Sponsored by the Chesterbrook PTA, the program comes via "Museum Without Walls Mobile Labs," which was created by The Children's Science Center to engage children ages 5-12 in hands-on activities that demonstrate scientific principles. Your child will learn more about renewable wind energy, chemical reactions, engineering and flight, and many more topics.

The Family Fun Event Team is looking for volunteers to man each of the demonstration stations.  The Children's Science Center provides all of the supplies and very simple instructions to follow for each station - it is easy and fun.  Volunteer shifts are available from 5:30 to 7:00 and from 7 to 8:30. It is not a drop-off event, so by and large parents experience each exhibit with their child, which makes it easier for volunteers too.

Please use the  Sign Up Genius Link to sign up now and to help share your love for science and math with Chesterbrook kids.  If you have middle schoolers or high schoolers who need volunteer hours they are welcome and encouraged to participate.
Spring 2013 Book Fair & Books for the Heart
The 2013 Spring Book Fair is just around the corner - Monday, April 29th to Thursday, May 2nd.  The Fair will give families a head start on summer reading and activities supplies, as well as generate funds for our school library.  Plus, books make great gifts so stock up for those summer birthdays!  Please note:  unlike the Fall there will be no re-stocks during the Spring Book Fair so come in early for the best selection!

There are still a few volunteer slots needed to help with sales and pack-up.   Each shift is at most 1 1/2 hours so please use the Sign Up Genius link to sign up if you can.  Your help is greatly appreciated!books

Chesterbrook will be hosting a book drive for Books From The Heart in conjunction with the book fair.   Books from the Heart is a program of a national non-profit organization called The Heart of America Foundation.  All of the books collected for Books from the Heart will be given to disadvantaged children in our area. We will be collecting books that are in good condition and suitable for children from babies through teenagers.  The drive will take place from April 29 through May 3.
Staff Appreciation Luncheon
By Kim Johnson, Hospitality Committee Chairperson

Bonjour!  This year, the PTA will treat our wonderful staff to a Parisian themed Luncheon on Monday, May 6th.  We need the help of about 30 parents to send in their favorite Parisian inspired (or just their favorite) salad, entree or dessert. We also need help with setup and clean up.  Please SIGN UP to help our wonderful Chesterbrook staff enjoy this special day and to thank them for all they do for our children at Chesterbook.  Merci Beaucoup!!
Autism Awareness Month - Light It Up Blue

by Katia Luedtke, PTA Special Education Liaision

The Light it Up Blue campaign is an effort to help to increase and develop knowledge of the autism epidemic and impart information regarding the importance of early diagnosis and early intervention. The campaign celebrates the unique talents and skills of persons with autism. Community events around the nation are taking place in an effort to inspire compassion, empowerment and hope for the more than 3 million Americans who currently live with an Autism spectrum disorder.

Autism is the nation's fastest-growing developmental disability. According to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), autism prevalence rates currently stand at 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys, but a report recently released by CDC and the Health Resources and Services Administration suggests this figure could be as high as 1 in 50 children.

At Chesterbrook, we are celebrating Autism Awareness Month by lighting up our Display Case blue (see below) and featuring materials and sharing Autism Awareness pins with our teachers. In our community, the Autism Society of Northern Virginia is holding an Autism Acceptance Walk in Fredericksburg, Virginia on April 28 from 1-4pm. Learn more or sign up at Autism Acceptance. What will you do to Light It Up Blue?

For more information on Light it Up Blue and Autism advocacy, research and fundraising, go to Autism Speaks.

Help the Cafeteria Lose Weight--Reclaim Lost Clothes!!
lostandfound Chesterbrook's Lost and Found Cubby in the cafeteria is overflowing!  Next time you are at Chesterbrook, please stop by the cafeteria and check the rolling closet to see if there is something in there with your child's name on it. Please try to go through in a tidy manner as Chesterbrook's wonderful Instructional Aide, Anne Oudemans, went through the onerous task of organizing and folding all the items.  Soon unclaimed items will be donated to a local charity.  There is also a Lost & Found area for smaller items, located at the front office.  There are even a pair of boots (see lower left hand corner of photo).

Shop and Share Event at Pink Palm
Come out and support Chesterbrook once again at the  McLean for an evening full of fun, shopping, and refreshments on Tuesday, May 21st from 5 to 7:30 pm.

If you are interested in serving as Yearbook Chair next year (or finding out what's involved), please email [email protected]. This year's team is wrapping up their work in the next two weeks so next year's chair could get a sneak peek at how it's done.  It is a fun job which oversees yearbook production, including photography, orders and publicity, and the art contest.
Summer Quest 2013

SummerQuest Registration for our 2013 Summer Quest camp program has begun!!  Summer Quest will be held over 4 1-week sessions beginning July 8, 15, 22, and 29, with morning and afternoon sessions and an after-care program. Because of construction work at Chesterbrook this summer, Summer Quest will be held at Haycock Elementary School at 6616 Haycock Rd, Falls Church, Virginia. It is the same Summer Quest program you've enjoyed the past few summers taught primarily by Chesterbrook Elementary teachers....only the location has changed and by less than 2 miles!
