FAQs |
Question: We went to International Night last February and my whole family learned (and tasted!) something new. Is that coming up again? We lived overseas for a few years--could we represent that country even though it isn't our native country?
Answer: Of course! Our Third Annual International Night is coming up February 8, and for those new to Chesterbrook, it is one of our newest and favorite events where families create a display to represent a country and provide small tastes of regional food. Guests wander around the cafeteria learning about countries and eating around the world.
You can contact Nancy Stuckwisch to request a country and she'll take it from there. Chester looks forward to seeing what you come up with for your adopted country!
Check out our FAQs section on the website and send any questions to Ask Chester and we'll answer them here and/or on the website.

Chesterbrook PTA Digest
No.10, January 7, 2013
Happy New Year and welcome back! Please take note of the following upcoming dates:
Registration for Fitness Warriors, Drama, Yoga, January 8 at 7pm PTA meeting, January 15, 8:30 am Band concerts, January 18 at 2:20 pm and January 22 at 7 pm Martin Luther King Day school holiday, January 21 6th Grade Science Fair, January 24 Teacher work days, student holidays, January 28-29 International Night, February 8, 6:30 pm
At our January 15 PTA meeting we will be voting on our committee to nominate officers for the upcoming year. This committee also assists in filling board positions. We are graduating some of our most active PTA members this year and are looking for a few more parents to step up and fill these shoes! Please contact nominating@chesterbrookpta.org.
Also, weather permitting, FCPS will begin PTA-sponsored repairs on the outdoor stairway connecting the park and Franklin Park neighborhood to the Chesterbrook playing fields beginning January 8th. The work will take about a week so students should refrain from using this pathway until the construction is completed. And on that note, have you tried out the new track or seen the new stage steps in the cafeteria? We are also preparing improvements to the stage sound and lighting system. It's shaping up to be a year of multiple small improvements with your PTA funds...unless we have another big auction year...then who knows what's possible!
Sincerely, 2012-2013 Chesterbrook PTA Board |

Winter Activities Getting Underway Now
| Registration for winter sessions of Fitness Warriors (before school) and yoga and drama (after school) will begin Tuesday, January 8 at 7pm on the PTA website, www.chesterbrookpta.org. The website has links to flyers with the session dates and costs.
The winter/spring session of Chess Club is already open for registration through Silver Knights. This is new from years past -- to continue in chess club students will need to register for the second half of the year. Also, because of strong demand and an unexpected availability of space at the school, we are offering two sessions of Chess club, one on Wednesdays for grades K-2 and one on Fridays for grades 3-6.
Registration for BE-STEMS for boys in Grades 5-6 is also ongoing as well as a late spring session joint GEMS and BE-STEMs session for boys and girls in grades 5-6. The popular science enrichment Lego robotics winter session held registration and a lottery in December, but there will be a spring session of this activity as well.
If you have any questions or have trouble registering please email afterschool@chesterbrookpta.org.

Family Directory
| This year's Chesterbrook School Directory is ready. As you know, we used the a to z directories company's database. By now, everyone should hopefully be plugged into the online school database app and for those families current with their PTA dues, you should have received a print version of the directory as well. Going forward, please log into the a to z database using your username and password to make any changes to your family data. If you have any issues or concerns, please email directory@chesterbrookpta.org. Many thanks.
The App will have the most up-to-date directory information and will be accessible via iPhone, Android, Blackberry, and even from your desktop computer! Once you've completed the Verification Wizard, you will be taken to the desktop version of the app.
The App is not available in the iTunes store or the Android market. To access the app from your smart phone, follow the instructions below:- Go to www.schooldirectoryupdate.com from your phone's browser
- Enter your username and password from your verification email sent 12/3/12. (Be sure to have cookies enabled on your phone).
- To save the app icon to your homescreen, click the link that corresponds to your phone:
- If you have any problems with the software, you can email info@atozdirectories.com and they will be sure to respond.

Box Tops for Education Deadline
| February 14th is the final drop-off deadline for our Box Tops for Education program this school year. Box Tops can be found on hundreds of products from brands like these: General Mills, Ziploc®, Pillsbury®, Kleenex®, Betty Crocker®, Hefty®. Please collect, trim, and return the Box Tops to the small green canister across from the Media Center.
Remember that Chesterbrook earns 10 cents for each coupon submitted. Amazingly our school turned in over 7,000 coupons in the fall, amounting to a $700+ donation from the program to our school!
Thanks in advance for your help. If you have any questions, please contact Susie French. |
Green Team Still Needs Volunteers |
Chesterbrook's Green Team needs volunteers at lunchtime, particularly for the younger grades, to help students sort their recycling and food recovery items (unopened and unused food from students' lunches). If you come eat lunch with your child, check in with the cafeteria monitor to see how you can help for a few minutes at cleanup time. By incorporating recycling and food recovery at lunchtime, Chesterbrook is instilling healthy habits we hope will last a lifetime. Trash has been cut by more than 50% and our first collection of juice pouches (15 pounds) has been sent to TerraCycle. For more information on how you can help at lunchtime, please email greenchesterbrook@googlegroups.com.
On Friday afternoons we need volunteers to deliver food collections to SHARE of McLean, a local food pantry. This is an easy project and a great way to help the community. Since September, Chesterbrook has recovered and donated 500 pounds of food!! Check out our SignUp Genius link to see if there's a day you can volunteer. For more information on the specifics of what is needed, contact Kathleen Weil.

FCPS Superintendent Search
| --From FCPS School Board: In December 2012, the Fairfax County School Board asked for input from the community on the important characteristics of a superintendent via a series of meetings with the consultants from Hazard, Young, Attea, & Associates (HYA) and through an online survey on the FCPS website. HYA presented a report to the Board at its meeting on December 20 and based on the input received, the Board has crafted a draft of the desired characteristics. View the draft set of characteristics.
The Board would like to offer stakeholders a second opportunity to share thoughts and feedback on the draft characteristics. The HYA consultants will be holding four additional community forums to gather input. If you would like to share your thoughts on the draft criteria, please plan to attend one of the following forums: January 14, 4 p.m., Centreville HS library January 14, 7 p.m., Hayfield SS (in middle school cafeteria 1535) January 15, 10 a.m., Gatehouse Administration Center, Room 1600 January 15, 7 p.m., South Lakes HS cafeteria
Additionally, the online survey will remain open until January 23. Please go to the FCPS website at www.fcps.edu and take the survey if you have not already done so.
The Board will review the input gathered at these meetings and finalize the characteristics that we seek in the next superintendent at the January 30 work session. We thank everyone who has participated in the process. We believe that the information developed will be critically important as we go through the interview process with potential superintendent candidates.
