FAQs | Q. In light of the recent CT tragedy, this can be a tough time for students & families. Is there help at the school and through Fairfax County to support my student's or family's concerns and offer guidance as to how to handle these emotions?
A. Principal Fuqua and all administrators in our school district are reaching out to offer support in many ways. In addition the County is offering additional law enforcement and security activities to help students and the community feel safer during the week(s) ahead. Please click on the links to read more about how you can access support and about the increase of security in our schools. Fairfax Resources for Community Support and Talking to Children.

Safety Protocol at Chesterbrook
| Just so you know...Our school will be following the strictest protocol regarding our building door security in the coming months.
- A gentle reminder, if you need to enter the building, please come to the front door to be buzzed in. (SACC parents will have access to the building per the usual protocol.)
- Please do not drop your child/children off at school before 8:20 a.m. unsupervised.
- Please note that the school office closes at 4:30 p.m. If there is an event following that time, event organizers will need to have a door keeper to allow entrance to the event.

Thank You From Carlin Springs and Timberlane
| Our donations to the nearby communities of the Carlin Springs Elementary and Timberlane Schools are very much appreciated. We recently received two lovely notes from administrators at the schools who thanked our community for sharing what we could with the students and their families. Thank you notes

Three activities for upper grades are continuing registration! Electronic Magazine for upper grades began on November 29 but is still open for registration. Boys Excelling in Science, Technology and Math (BESTEMS) for grades 5 and 6 will start in January. Please click here to see more information on these winter activities!
A new session of Silver Knights chess club will start mid-January, with a few changes to the current format. Chess club for kids in grades K-2 will be on Wednesdays, and for kids in grades 3-6 on Fridays. The Friday class is going to be followed by Tournament Training, as it is now. Younger kids are allowed to participate on Fridays, and older kids are allowed to participate on Wednesdays. The age separation is guideline rather than a rule, and the club will still be structured essentially the way it is now, just with some kids coming on Wednesday and some coming on Friday.
Registration for yoga, fitness warriors, chess club and drama will be held in January. Stay tuned for more details! Click here to view the before and after school activities page. If you have any questions, please email afterschool@chesterbrookpta.org. |

Save the Date: May 3rd for Special Science Event |
On Friday, May 3, 2013, you and your family will have the chance to attend a free Family Science Night program and family bonding program! The event will include hands-on activities that demonstrate a variety of scientific principles and make STEM (science technology, engineering, and math) learning fun, accessible, and more appealing to kids. Your child will learn more about renewable wind energy, chemical reactions, engineering and flight, and many more topics. Sponsored by the Chesterbrook PTA and brought to Chesterbrook by the Children's Science Center, it will be a great opportunity to share your enthusiasm for science with your kids. We'll need approximately 30 volunteers for this evening event, so if you are passionate about science, mark your calendar now and watch for details and a sign-up genius invite.

Lunchtime Help Needed
|
Chesterbrook's Green Team needs volunteers at lunchtime, particularly for the younger grades, to help keep students on track as they sort their recycling. You can come eat lunch with your child and then spend a few minutes at the end of the lunch period helping students be sure they are properly sorting recycling versus trash. Ask the cafeteria monitor how you can help and get a cheat sheet on how the process works. By incorporating recycling and food recovery at lunchtime, Chesterbrook is instilling healthy habits, helping the community (through donations to food pantries) and helping the environment. For more information, email greenchesterbrook@googlegroups.com.
Also, we'd love to see students reuse instead of recycle (where possible). You can do this by sending sandwiches/snacks and drinks in reusable containers, rather than using plastic bags or juice boxes. You can buy reusable sandwich wrappers, plastic sandwich containers, and small reusable bottles at MOM's Organic Market, the Container Store and Whole Foods Markets among other places. You can even buy the "Glad" brand containers at the supermarket and they are very reasonably priced. If you're not able to make that switch, ask your child to bring home clean ziploc bags so they can be reused a few times!

Auction Season Approaches! |
By: Julia Nelson and Amanda Abraham, Auction Co-Chairs
Our Online Auction will open in less than three months on February 17th! How can you help? One simple way is to JOIN OUR TEAM! We can use your help in the following areas:
- Solicitations -- following-up with donors from last year or working on new ideas
- Marketing and publicity -- helping us get the word out!
- Entering auction items into our online catalog
- Proofreading items that have been entered
- Packaging and mailing items to winning bidders who live outside our area
Many jobs can be done at home when it's convenient for you. Helping with the Auction is a fun way to raise money for the PTA and also to get to know other Chesterbrook parents. For more information, please contact Julia or Amanda at auction@chesterbrookpta.org.
Another way to help is to DONATE OR PROCURE AN ITEM, SERVICE OR CONTRIBUTION. We are looking for all kinds of things. Some examples:
- gift certificates to restaurants, salons, gift shops, garden centers
- weekend or week-long getaways - near or far
- tickets to a show or sporting event
- special tours -- White House, CIA, Smithsonian, etc.
- anything kid-related -- parties, childcare, toys, etc.
- electronics, Wii games, autographed books...the possibilities are endless!
Click here to view and print the Donor Form (also found on the PTA website under Online Auction). All auction items and Donor Forms may be delivered to the front office at school or to Julia Nelson's house. We will also be happy to make arrangements to pick up your item(s), just email auction@chesterbrookpta.org.
Thanks in advance for your support!
