FAQs

Question:  In this time of Holiday festivities, how can I participate if I am traveling or stuck at work? Do the children do anything to reach out to others at this time of the year?

Answer: To participate in your child's event, please keep an eye out for emails and flyers from your room parents. There are many different ways to join in, even if you are away or unable to physically come to the party. These include donating a food or craft item to the party or doing some advanced preparation for the craft/project. And, yes, each grade typically does a service craft/project that results in a donation of something special to local seniors, our troops, veterans, and other groups who greatly appreciate our children's good will.

Check out our FAQs section on the website and send any questions to  Ask Chester and we'll answer them here and/or on the website.

2nd Annual Chesterbrook Turkey Trot

The Health and Wellness committee is planning to hold the 2nd Annual Chesterbrook Turkey Trot on Wednesday, November 21st.  The Turkey Trot is a school-wide event where each grade level comes out to sprint, jog, or walk around the track for a 30 minute block of time. It is an event which is very successful in promoting healthy lifestyles for students. Parents and guardians are encouraged to come and participate with their kids during their ½ hour block! If you do join us for this event, please either sign in and grab a visitor sticker in the office or at an outside sign-in station on the black top near the track. Please have kids wear appropriate shoes and clothing for the event. Finally, the Turkey Trot will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather.
If you are planning on taking your child with you after the event you will have to follow standard procedure, by signing them out at the school office.

Green Team Still Needs Volunteers

Chesterbrook's Green Team needs volunteers at lunchtime, particularly for the younger grades, to help students sort their recycling and food recovery items (unopened and unused food from students' lunches).  If you come eat lunch with your child, check in with the cafeteria monitor to see how you can help for a few minutes at cleanup time.  By incorporating recycling and food recovery at lunchtime, Chesterbrook is instilling healthy habits we hope will last a lifetime. Trash has been cut by more than 50% and our first collection of juice pouches (15 pounds) has been sent to TerraCycle. For more information on how you can help at lunchtime, please email greenchesterbrook@googlegroups.com.

On Friday afternoons we need volunteers to deliver food collections to SHARE of McLean, a local food pantry. This is an easy project and a great way to help the community.  Since September, Chesterbrook has recovered and donated 500 pounds of food!!   Check out our SignUp Genius link to see if there's a day you can volunteer. For more information on the specifics of what is needed, contact Kathleen Weil.

During This Thanksgiving Week We Are Grateful For...
outreach fall 2012 Thank you to everyone who donated to the PTA School Outreach's fall donation drive! We collected 5 grocery gift cards and raised almost $100 at the book fair to purchase additional cards. We also collected a large box of school supplies and clothing for our partner schools.
Thank you!  -  The PTA School Outreach Committee

Three trucks were loaded with donations by CES and other Local Families for Hurricane Sandy Victims in NJ and NY
NJ Community Thanks CES Community
U.S. Rep. Chris Smith (NJ-4)  and volunteers wrap up the unloading of a third truck of donated items for NJ victims of Hurricane Sandy. The effort was coordinated through the family and friends of U.S. Rep. Steve LaTourette and Mrs. Jennifer LaTourette of Ohio (a Chesterbrook Parent). Cong. Smith represents Trenton as well as large Jersey Shore areas in Monmouth and Ocean Counties and helped unload the truck at the Salvation Army's Trenton, NJ warehouse on Enterprise Avenue.

"This is a wonderful act of goodwill and charity on the part of many who want to help New Jersey victims of Hurricane Sandy," Smith said. "It is truly heart-felt. On behalf of the people of the Fourth Congressional District and all the hard hits areas of New Jersey, I want to thank Steve and Jennifer LaTourette of Ohio, the Chesterbrook Elementary School, Gentle Giant Moving Company and the American Trucking Association and all those who made contributions for collecting and shipping these donations to New Jersey. I am extremely appreciative to Maj. Phil Davis of the Salvation Army and his workers who helped unload the trucks and will help make these items available to the victims of Sandy."

U.S. Rep. Steve LaTourette (OH-14), who is retiring from Congress at the end of the year, and his wife Jennifer and their two children, helped coordinate the effort through their school, sending a total of three trucks. Cong. LaTourette's Washington office is down the hall from Cong. Smith's office. After viewing some of the carnage at the Jersey Shore, they decided to offer to collect goods for the victims. See more on CES
Thank you to everyone in our community!

Thanks to everyone for working so hard collecting Box Tops for Education.  In the fall 2012 submission of Box Tops, Chesterbrook made $744!!  Great job, everyone!  I will be returning the Box Top baggies labeled with family names -- look for them in an upcoming Thursday envelope.  And start collecting Box Tops again because our next deadline is Friday, February 15, 2013.

Thank you - Susie Miller-French
