Chesterbrook PTA Digest

No.7, November 6, 2012

Wow, what a week!!  We hope that all of you were safe during the storm, stayed warm and were not overly inconvenienced due to the power outages.  Given the situation in New York, New Jersey and elsewhere, we are very thankful that we were not hit as hard as those communities and our thoughts and prayer are with our neighbors to the north.

This Wednesday, November 7th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. a truck will be on site at Chesterbrook collecting donations for the victims of this horrendous storm.  Items that are needed in particular are blankets, cleaning supplies, D batteries, and warm coats and clothing.  The truck will deliver the donations directly to those in need on Staten Island on Thursday.  Please consider helping those who have lost so much!!

Batteries Not Included: How to Supercharge Your Child's Academic Motivation
We are thrilled that Ann Dolin will once again offer a free presentation at Chesterbrook Elementary School on Tuesday, November 13, 2012.  Ann is a former Fairfax County teacher, author, and the founder and president of Educational Connections Inc.  In her 20 years of experience in education, Ann has worked with thousands of families to help them with issues ranging from homework to motivation.

Ann's presentation, "Batteries Not Included:  How to Supercharge Your Child's Academic Motivation" will cover the following:
  • The four main reasons students struggle to stay motivated in school.
  • Effective communication strategies -- how to talk so your kids will listen and how to listen so your kids will talk.
  • Ways to foster resiliency even when kids seem to follow the 'path of least resistance'.
  • Crucial study skills for academic success.
  • Ways to maintain and promote on-task and peaceful behavior during homework time.
  • Finding the balance between helping too much and not enough.

This event is open to all, so please pass along to friends and neighbors!
Join Us for the Annual Thanksgiving Lunch

On Thursday, November 15th, parents, siblings and other family members are invited to join their Chesterbrook student(s) for a Thanksgiving lunch with all the trimmings!   Our students love to have their family members attend the lunch, so please check your calendars and make every effort to attend. You will receive a letter in the mail from Chesterbrook which has the ticket order form and your child's your child's scheduled time for lunch. We appreciate it when you buy the tickets in advance, as it allows our cafeteria staff to better plan for the event, but tickets will be available at the door, as well.

Many hands are necessary to make this lunch an enjoyable event for everyone and it's a great opportunity to put meaning into the "giving" part of the holiday. If you can volunteer some time to help set up on Wednesday afternoon  and/or before or after your student's lunch, please take a look at  and sign up to help on our SignUpGenius: www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E45ADA82F4-thanksgiving1

Stop Hunger Now Event -- November 10th

There will be three two hour shifts 8:30 - 10:30 AM; 11:00 - 1 PM; and 1:30 to 3:30 PM.

WHERE:  Redeemer Church, 1545 Chain Bridge Road, McLean

GET INVOLVED: Sign up for a shift by emailing

Green Team Still Needs Volunteers

The Green Team's 'food recovery' program still needs volunteers.  Just before lunchroom clean-up, the program volunteers collect unopened and unused food from students' lunches and deliver it to SHARE of McLean, a local food pantry.  It is an easy project and a great way to help the community. Check out our SignUp Genius link to see if there's a day you can volunteer. For more information on the specifics of what is needed, contact Kathleen Weil.

The PTA is Accepting Leftover Halloween Candy

Don't let that leftover Halloween Candy tempt you, donate it to the PTA instead!! The PTA will use it for the Fun Fair Guess-timates game and if we get enough, we won't need to purchase any for the game next Spring.  Drop off or send in with your child any wrapped candy in the drop box in the main office now through November 16th. Thanks for your help!
