FAQs |
Question: I am new to Chesterbrook and interested in getting involved with the PTA. How can I help?
Answer: The PTA is ALWAYS looking for voluneers. You could come to the Fun Fair Kick-off meeting on Oct. 31 at Kim Johnson's house. The Fun Fair is a big event and we need lots of volunteers. You can also register your grocery cards so that when you shop, Chesterbook earns money. Go to http://chesterbrookpta.org/registergrocerycards.aspx
for information on how to register your cards.
Check out our FAQs section on the website and send any questions to Ask Chester and we'll answer them here and/or on the website. |

Chesterbrook Helps Stock Local Food Pantry
|
The Green Team has begun 'food recovery' at Chesterbrook. A few minutes before a class is scheduled to finish lunch, several students collect unopened and unused food to be delivered to SHARE of McLean, a local food pantry.
In the first six weeks of this program, we have recovered over 250 pounds of food! With the September 2012 USDA report noting that 1 in 6 Americans live in "food insecure" houses (meaning that their access to adequate food is limited by a lack of money and other resources), distributing food that would otherwise be thrown in the trash is a way to help local food pantries across Fairfax County feed the hungry. It's also an important way to aid in reducing the amount of food in our environmental waste stream and landfills.
Are you interested in helping deliver food to a local food pantry on a Friday afternoon? It is an easy project and a great way to help the community. Check out our SignUp Genius link to see if there's a day you can volunteer. For more information on the specifics of what is needed, contact Kathleen Weil.

| Chesterbrook Elementary has it's own line of Spirit Wear - tee shirts, sweatshirts, PJ pants and car magnets. We have two new designs this year - both with a new spunky chipmunk graphic. A flyer was put in last week's backpack showing the different options and prices. Samples of some sizes are in the display case outside the school office. In general, order an XS tee shirt for K-1st grade. Order a S sweatshirt for 4-5 yr olds, a M for 1st grade. PJ pants S should be good for up to 3rd grade. Everything comes in Youth and Adult sizing. The form is also available on the PTA website at http://chesterbrookpta.org/spiritwear-2.aspx . The form has all you need to know about ordering - but if you still have questions, feel free to contact Carol Brunner. |
PTA School Outreach Fall Collection | The PTA has begun a collection of gift cards, clothing and school supplies to support two neighboring schools in Arlington and Fairfax County which have students and families in need. This year, the clothing needs are very specific: new or gently used boys pants for preschoolers (size 3 to 6); and new or gently used sweatpants and sweatshirts childrens' sizes 5 to 20, unisex colors. Also needed are Jumbo glue sticks; colored pencils & crayons, index cards, 1 inch binders, pink erasers, pencils & pencil sharpeners and composition notebooks. Please note if you are interested in participating but don't have time to purchase a grocery gift card, there will be a collection can in the library during Book Fair. Money from the collection will be used to purchase gift cards.
If you have any questions or would like to help with sorting and delivering the donations, please email Emily Ludwikowski. Thanks for your support!! |
Batteries Not Included: How to Supercharge Your Child's Academic Motivation | We are thrilled that Ann Dolin will once again offer a free presentation atChesterbrook Elementary School on Tuesday, November 13, 2012. Ann is a former Fairfax County teacher, author, and the founder and president of Educational Connections Inc. In her 20 years of experience in education, Ann has worked with thousands of families to help them with issues ranging from homework to motivation.
Ann's presentation, "Batteries Not Included: How to Supercharge Your Child's Academic Motivation" will cover the following:
- The four main reasons students struggle to stay motivated in school.
- Effective communication strategies -- how to talk so your kids will listen and how to listen so your kids will talk.
- Ways to foster resiliency even when kids seem to follow the 'path of least resistance'.
- Crucial study skills for academic success.
- Ways to maintain and promote on-task and peaceful behavior during homework time.
- Finding the balance between helping too much and not enough.
This event is open to all, so please pass along to friends and neighbors! |
