 Fire Security

We recently had an inspection by the Ledyard Fire Marshal, Jim Mann, who comes out annually to be sure AA Lock & Key, Inc., is in compliance with fire code regulations. He shared some potential fire hazards that people might have around the home or office.

1. Old 9 volt batteries that might be rolling around a junk drawer, especially a metal drawer, can have enough power to heat up and ignite starting all that other junk on fire.

2. Surge protector issues-Do not daisy chain the devices, they will battle each other for control and get hot enough to start a fire.

3. The same goes for using extension cords, especially extension cords plugged into surge protectors. Everything should be plugged into its own wall outlet.

UL Listed items - there are electronic items on the market that are not UL listed, these have not been tested and are considered NOT safe.

Always buy UL listed items.

4. Document your home and office belongings before a disaster happens, and keep copies of the documented items at a third party location, like a safe deposit box or other trustworthy site.

5. Fire Marshal Jim recommended taking a video or close up pictures of your items for insurance purposes.
