October brought the 35th annual Yankee Security Convention & Tradeshow in Sturbridge, MA. During this 5 day event Dan attended three industry continuing educational classes focused on Basic Electricity & Electronics, Installing & Servicing Electronic Access Control Systems, and Lock Picking.

Each class offered hands on experience, with real world trouble shooting and installation, however Lock Picking was Dan's favorite. Lock Picking demonstrated of the techniques of gaining access, such as the use of pick guns and rocker picks. Dan Says, "Before I took the class, I knew how to pick a lock, but didn't completely understand the concept of what was happening inside the cylinder. Now I understand why it works and why it is a viable solution to opening a lock. The class helped me improve my feel of the pick when lifting the pins inside the cylinder."  By completing this class, Dan feels his new knowledge and skill will directly contribute towards many of the services we provide here at AA Lock&Key, Inc.

While Dan was busy earning new certificates, Dave was busy working the registration booth at the trade show over the weekend. Dave, a member of the Board of Directors, usually serves as the Education Coordinator, but this year he came face to face with all levels of the industry's associates. While many people registered online, all members had to pick up their credentials at the registration booth.  At times Dave left the registration booth to assist with general show management.  This year Dave was able to enjoy the convention and trade show from not only as a Board of Director member, but as an attendee and appreciate what the convention has to offer.

Are you one of those folks who keep the spare key outside under the flower pot? Did you know that keys kept outside for an emergency can pick up dirt and moisture? That dirt and moisture will transfer to your lock once the key is inserted.  Dirty locks can cause lock failure and freeze up during these cold months.

A bent key is a weak key. Continuous use of the bent key will further weaken or bend the key, which can result in the key breaking off in your lock or stop working altogether. The cost of a new key is minimal compared to the cost of a new lock. Inspect your keys regularly and have a new one made at the first sign of wear.

How many keys does your business or organization have? Ever consider a key box?  Key organization systems typically consists of a wall mounted key cabinet with a log in / out sheet when the keys are used by several employees. Key cabinets range in capacity from 8 to 500 keys and are usually secured with a key lock, but keyless entry cabinets are becoming popular.

Many large companies have master key systems with a very complicated key tracking. There are now several software packages available for keeping those types of records.  Contact us if you are interested in updating your key tracking to a computer based system.

Our first question comes from Linda, our newest employee;

 she asks

"Can a key wear out?"

 Yes! Overtime and with use, a key can become worn and lose the proper cut. This can happen from metal on metal rubbing from the lock or from other keys on a key ring. Most often, a key will become worn-out because it is used for other purposes such as cutting or opening boxes, and screwdriver type tasks.

Houdini is famous for his thrilling magical tricks, but not many people think of him as a lock pick. Houdini's escapes and survival depended on his expert lock picking skills. Where did he hide his key or his pick? The fun is, we will never know.

Unlike Houdini, we proudly display our keys.
