Reading Skills and Childhood Development

With the school year in full gear, parents of young children are ushering them into a new phase of learning and skills building: reading and writing. Reading skills are critical to the development of healthy, successful kids. So it may seem alarming to learn that according to the Reading Rockets Toolkit for School Psychologists, 37 percent of our nation's fourth graders are performing below a "basic" level, meaning they cannot read well enough to understand a simple story, or can barely read at all. Studying Brain Function Through Neurofeedback

By Jonathan Wagner, Clinician at Natalis Counseling & Psychology Solutions

Neurofeedback is a way of observing, recording and assessing how the electrical activity in a participant's brain is functioning in order to bring influence and change to brain activity. For example, if we want to learn something new, we actively repeat and modify the thought, idea or activity until we are satisfied with the outcome. With neurofeedback, a therapist uses a computer to monitor the activity of the participant's brain, which then offers "feedback" visually and audibly to their brain. Read more about Neurofeedback (PDF).

National School Lunch Week

October 15-19 is National School Lunch Week. National School Lunch Week is a great opportunity to increase the awareness of healthy eating for children all over the country. Participating schools may offer special menu items, games and contests. If your child does not eat school lunches, you can still talk to your child about how important it is to eat healthy. For more information visit the School Nutrition Association's website.
