TAKING IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL
The Summit Chess Team will be playing at the upcoming PS 41 tournament on Sunday, March 26. So far, Summit has three players competing in the Championship and Open sections. Does your child attend Summit's REAP after-school chess program? Consider trying out a tournament. We are hoping to add more players to represent the school. Students can play, even if they have never played in a tournament before! With so many sections available, players of all abilities can have a positive experience.
|
Chess is booming in New York City with students from all age ranges and abilities participating in tournament play at various locations. Last year, the World Chess Championship was held in New York City after a twenty-one-year hiatus that has helped to fuel more interest in the game.

Making It Real
The Lower School's 8th grade middle school technology classes are "Making It Real!" In this program, students are learning how to use spreadsheets in Google Docs to represent data in a variety of forms. Google Docs is a part of our Google Apps For Education suite that is available to all students. With the support and guidance of John Trainor, Summit's Technology Director, students recently participated in a multi-lesson learning activity that involved sorting through a bag of M&Ms and recording their findings into a spreadsheet. Students were taught how to input data, write equations to solve real word problems, and create a graphical representation. Students also learned how to format a spreadsheet, merge cells, adjust the size of columns and rows, how to move columns of data, and use the sum and average features -- all with real information they assembled. Follow-up lessons will help students fine tune their spreadsheet skills to be used in other areas, such as science and math. The goal of "Making It Real" is to teach students about the basic functions of spreadsheets so that this tool may be incorporated into other areas of their lives. *Meet camp unit leaders and on-campus staff
Summit Camp was started in 1969 nestled on a hill in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains to serve children and teens with learning and social challenges. At Summit Camp, your child will experience the same great traditions found at a premiere sleep-away camp, but with a nurturing environment that meets the unique social and emotional needs of young people who have difficulty with sustaining friendships. Our campers enjoy an atmosphere completely designated to their success: fun, friendship, and independent growth.
