SUMMIT TEAMS
| Go, Summit Chess! A Call for Players
Students at Summit have distinguished themselves over the years at various chess competitions. Most recently on January 22 at P.S. 6 at the East Side Chess Tournament, honors went to Ethan Kozower (Class 14) and Alan Morris-Suzuki (Class 13) who claimed the First Place Team prize in the Open II Section, outwitting and out-strategizing players from Dalton and Collegiate. Max Kumar (Class 13) did a great job in the Open I Section. Additionally, on January 15 Max Kumar took First Place (among 32 players) at the NYC Chess Kids Tournament held at P.S. 116.

We are very proud of our students' results and their commitment and hard work that is required to perform at this level (not to mention the composure they exhibited under pressure).
Summit has an active chess group as part of its REAP after-school program, where intermediate and advanced players train on Mondays and Thursdays with Summit teacher Matthew Looks, who is a National Chess Master.
Thanks to recent interest expressed by students and parents, official recruitment of players for a Summit chess team is underway. If you are interested in learning more about how tournaments work, how to register, and to be added to the chess team mailing list, please email Jenny Ecclestone (mother of Max Kumar) at jennyecc@hotmail.com. As we go forward, there are tournaments at all levels that we can aspire to: city, regional, state, and the Nationals. Join us! Upcoming tournament dates are:
- Saturday March 25 at P.S. 41 (Greenwich Village, 116 West 11th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenues)
- Sunday, April 30 at P.S. 6 (Upper East Side, 45 East 81st Street, between Park and Madison Avenues)

Summit's Lady Wildcats, including Coach Carl Miranda, recently attended a women's basketball game at St. John's University and had a blast, including seeing The Summit School's name on the Welcome scoreboard. Upper School Students Get Into the Game
On January 22, Upper School students got together for some fun at Indoor Extreme Sports in Long Island City. In total, 24 kids took on assignments for two Black Ops laser tag teams. Black Ops takes players out of the virtual worlds of today's most popular video games and instead lets them compete in real world environments. That environment includes an 8,000 square-foot level that takes the battle in and out of commercial stores along a war-torn street -- outfitted with offices, a restaurant, the clothing store, the toy store, the video store, the supermarket, the bridge, the tunnel and the tank! Pizza and beverages followed the games -- a great afternoon indoors out of the cold.
Summit's PA is sponsoring the next Upper School event at Dave & Buster's Times Square on February 12 from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. Click here to register

A Thank You from Across the Miles: Members of Summit's chapter of the National Honor Society supported our troops during the holidays! They helped organize a collection of personal items, such as toiletries, and some hard-to-find-treats, such as hard candy and popcorn, that were then sent to U.S. troops stationed in Iraq. Clearly they are very grateful! Thank you to all who donated. We also extend our thanks to parents and students at Summit's Lower and Upper Schools for supporting our student-driven City Harvest Food Drive and the U.S. Marine's Toys for Tots Project this past holiday season. Together we are making a difference.

Students Find Inspiration at The Met
As part of a creative project, students in Mrs. Gretchyn's Senior English class took in some culture at The Metropolitan Museum of Art! No photo at The Met during the holiday season is complete until it includes their world famous Christmas tree. Students were treated to a guided tour of contemporary and modern art, had lunch, and shopped at the museum's many gift shops. A good time was had by all.
