Summit eBlast masthead

Our thanks to everyone for making
our Annual Benefit a night to remember.

While The Pierre Hotel provided us New York's unique ambiance, our supporters demonstrated Summit's strong sense of community through their attendance and gracious generosity, making our 2016 Annual Benefit truly a night to remember and our second best annual fundraiser in our history.

With a crowd of almost 300 parents and friends, we raised almost $350,000 to date, and additional funds are expected before the end of the year to help get us closer to our goal. These funds will directly benefit Summit students by closing the gap that results between the state's low tuition rate and the actual cost of a Summit education.

Again, Annual Benefit sponsorships and journal ads make a critical difference in our program funding and generated the largest portion of funds raised. We are gratified by the wonderful response of parents at all levels and who included such inspiring personal messages in our Benefit Journal to our students and staff as well as business ads to support our school.

This year's restaurant gift certificate fund was also successful -- again. Restaurant gift certificates, one of our most popular areas of the silent auction, received bids that more than doubled our return to exceed our expectations. Thanks to all of our parents for your early and continued support of the restaurant fund. Our top five restaurants included Le Bernardin (Midtown West), Peter Luger's Steakhouse (Williamsburg), Batard (Tribeca), Eleven Madison Park (Flatiron), and Bouley (Tribeca).

Chromebooks in Every Classroom. For Every Student.

Parents generously responded to Summit's Appeal: Chromebooks in Every Classroom. For Every Student, an initiative to fund the purchase of 200 chromebooks that will be used in classrooms schoolwide.

Why chromebooks? Why now? First, the infrastructure now exists for a cloud-based learning environment, and we now have one at Summit. Last month, we finished piloting a one-year chromebook and Google Apps for Education initiative. Here's what we found out: While laptops are best for computer programming and multimedia authoring, chromebooks are best for general productivity tasks, such as word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, and surfing the web. The bottom line: there's a need for both.

Second, affordability. Three chromebooks equals one laptop. That's why we're asking our parents to buy one chromebook. If you do, then we can reach our goal. More chromebooks equal greater student access to technology throughout the day. With 200 more chromebooks, we can have chromebooks in every classroom available to every student.

Third is compatability. Students can access their work at school or from home. No longer will teachers hear "My dog ate my homework." With everything in the cloud, information will be at your child's fingertips, 24/7. This continuity will promote better learning and organizational skills for our students.

Our thanks and appreciation to parents and friends who generously provided support at the Annual Benefit and get funding started:

Over $38,200 was raised at the Annual Benefit -- enough to buy another 127.5 chromebooks, but not enough to get us to our goal of buying 200 more chromebooks.

Still needed: 72.5 chromebooks.

Please help us provide the right tools for your children.
$300 = 1 Chromebook

Thank you to everyone for your perseverance on behalf of Summit. From the bottom of our hearts: Thank you for your continued confidence and generosity.

It takes much more than a handful of people to bring an annual event of this proportion to fruition, and we are grateful to everyone for making this stellar event possible:

To our 2016 Honorees -- the Gibbons | Rabinowitz Family -- Rachel, Dan, Shoshana, Ben, Erica, and Brian -- Summit parents, alumni, students, and supporters. We are truly gratified by the overwhelming response extended by their family and friends on our behalf. We are proud to count the Gibbons|Rabinowitz family among our parent and alumni communities. They are an inspiration and have played an important part in moving our school and our students forward in so many ways.

To our many parents who volunteered their talents and time to solicit items for the auction, to contribute item donations for the silent auction and themed gift baskets, to reach out on our behalf and find uniquely special items for our live auction, and who attended the night's event and bid and rebid (and rebid until they won).

To our PA Benefit Coordinators who started reaching out for Summit the day after last year's event and joined in from strategy to setup: Haylee Goldberg and Jeanmarie Scarlatto. To our restaurant gift certificate shopper, Amy Koza. To our alumni parent B.J. Langer-Broas, our bountiful basket coordinator who marked her fifteenth year assisting our Annual Benefit and Summit parents who provided their talents to not only create our themed baskets but our beautiful centerpieces, including Deborah Hassan, Lisa Vella (alumni), and Vera Schneider. To our set-up volunteers Emily Roberts and Robin Unterberg and many, many others who continue to contribute fabulous auction items.

And, to our staff members -- Sue Ann Chong, Sophia Dhu-Stewart, Danny Kaufman, and Caterina Mercado, who are the administrative backbone for this event -- before, during, and after. Plus all of our staff who graciously volunteered at the event to greet our guests, serve as auction spotters/runners, and speed our guests through pickup. Our photographer, Carol Falco. And a special thanks to our Assistant Teacher Brandon Lomuto for taking on the role of Hamilton to generate one of our most successful raffles.

We count on the participation of all of our parents at all levels to make our Annual Benefit successful every year -- and we are always amazed.
