A Modern Day Soldier's Faith

On this Memorial Day weekend, we remember the sacrifices of those who have given their lives for our freedom and salute those who now serve in our military.

Each person entering the military takes an oath to defend our country and this solemn pledge ends with this well-worn phrase, "So help me God." For some, those closing words are more than a trite saying because they express their deep call to serve their Lord through a career in the military.

Retired General Hugh Shelton is just such a man. He currently lives in North Carolina and is a living war hero whose statue stands in Fayetteville. During the war of 9/11 General Shelton was the highest ranking officer in our military and served as Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff. Not only did he serve our nation with distinction but he did so as an expression of his faith. A testimony to that faith are the words from Isaiah 6 that are inscribed on his statue, "Then I heard the voice of Lord saying, "Whom shall send and who will go for us? Then I said, here am I, send me."

On this Memorial Day weekend, let us thank God for those who have given their lives for our freedom.   Let us also pray for those who now serve, especially those whose "ministry" is to live for Him while serving our country.
