Blue Cross Inclusion is Fact!

Look at what MMHCA has accomplished for Michigan counselors!

Blue Cross has approved Licensed Professional Counselors for reimbursement. This is the most significant accomplishment since we were able to pass the LPC Law in 1989.

  • BCBS paneling will begin in the fall of 2015 and reimbursements for service will begin after January 1, 2016.
  • BCBS fees for Masters level, Doctoral level, "Incident to" for LLPC's, and other factors are being finalized. Details of the agreement are being developed presently. Watch for announcements.

Look where our profession can go from here.

  • Our lobbying efforts are moving forward with updating and inclusion of the rules and regulations governing the profession in the State of Michigan.
  • We are working with Michigan's combined departments of Community Health plus Health and Human Services to create the means for full inclusion of LLPC/LPC's.
  • We are also supporting legislation to be introduced soon in the US House and Senate to include counselors under Medicare.
  • Workshops, Conferences, Networking Breakfasts, and the Annual Luncheon and Awards Event are being planned for the remainder of this year and into 2016.
  • A new website will be rolled out this fall that will improve our service delivery.
  • We are in the process of negotiating with Capitol Services to retain their lobbying services for another year.

Upcoming events:

  • Two hour workshop:  Treatment of Adult Children of Alcoholics  by James Blundo. Followed by the MMHCA Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon. Friday October 30, 2015 Great Lakes Christian College Lansing.
  • Suicide and Self-Mutilation Workshop presented by Jack Klott, author and workshop presenter across America. Friday November 13, 2015 Crowne Plaza Hotel Auburn Hills.
  • Integrative Care Conference scheduled for Friday December 4, 2015 at the Kellogg Conference Center at MSU East Lansing. Keynote Speaker Dr. James Messina.
  • ICD 10 CM workshops will be scheduled for the fall and winter. Dates are coming soon.
  • Private Practice Essentials Conference 2016.
  • Breakfast Networking Events this fall and 2016 - Jackson scheduled (September 26),Flint, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Traverse City, Petoskey, Ann Arbor, and Wayne, Oakland and Macomb County locations. Dates to be announced.

The State of Professional Counselors in 2015

Presented by:

Donald E. Deering, Ph.D.

MMHCA President

Professional Counselors (PCs) will reach 10,000 strong by 2016 in the State of Michigan, which is nearly double the amount of PCs from just 5 years ago. This unprecedented growth is not only a testament to our profession, but also the need for mental health services in our state and country. Since the inception of the Mental Health Parity & Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) a few years ago, our field has grown exponentially, not just here in Michigan, but across the United States. This is in part because for the first time in history, there is parity among medical healthcare insurance plans and mental healthcare plans. This has effectively resulted in significantly more access to mental health services than ever before, which in turn created a demand for mental health providers and ultimately led to a cascade of other initiatives benefiting PCs in an effort to meet this demand.

The field of mental health is unique in that we are the only profession that has multiple provider types which all work toward the same overall goal of mental health and wellbeing. For example, we have Psychiatrists (MD/DO), Nurse Practitioners (NP), Physician Assistants (PA), Professional Counselors (LPC/LLPC), Social Workers (LMSW/LLMSW), Marriage & Family Therapists (LMFT/LLMFT) and Psychologists (LP/LLP), just to name a few. There is literally no other profession that has so many different provider types working toward the same goal in very similar fashions. Interestingly this evolution of varying provider types has resulted in a fair amount of dissension among the disciplines over the years. Rather than coming together as a field and collectively working to carve out our unique and varying approaches to treatment, we have instead often focused on advancing our own agendas resulting in "turf wars." The outcome is a fragmented delivery system with little regard for our respective and varying disciplines. The message here is a challenge to be better... to lead by example. Embrace all mental health provider types and learn how and why that provider is uniquely qualified to deliver a specific service. We as a mental health profession must work together to disseminate the promotion of all mental health providers, while dismissing the longstanding stigma that still plagues our society with regard to mental health issues.

The Michigan Mental Health Counselors Association (MMHCA) will remain relentlessly dedicated to the advancement of all mental health providers, while also ensuring the protection and advancement of PCs. Toward that end, MMHCA continues to provide various and numerous trainings, workshops and seminars to support this process. A few offerings include DSM 5 / ICD 10 CM updates, Testing & Assessment Series (Psychometrics), LPC Supervisor Training Series, Ethics, Grief & Loss, Hypnosis, Sound Business Practices and lobbying update breakfast meetings, to name a few. For a complete list of offerings, please visit our website (www.MMHCA.org).

In closing, please take the time to get involved in this great organization and moreover, this great field. Rise above the fray and be the best version of yourself yet. Empower yourself.
Not about Chickens This Time!
I noticed that the topic for my last two articles was chickens. Did you notice? Sometimes, I wonder if anyone ever reads what I write. My feelings won't be hurt if you don't, but seriously you should read the rest of the MMHCA e-newsletter. There is a lot going on in Michigan this year and you don't want to miss it. The State of Professional Counselors by Don Deering, our MMHCA President is very exciting stuff.
