Executive Director Report
Out of My Mind
The Best Year Ever for counselors!
As I predicted in my letter to members at years end, this would be truly a great year for MMHCA and all LLPC/LPC's in Michigan. Please read this whole article. It's about you and us.
Here are the latest developments:
- Membership now exceeds 630 as of December 30, 2014.
- Based on our contacts, there is a very good chance that we will be included in Blue Cross. Watch for the announcement. Paneling could begin by midyear.
- MMHCA has contracted with Capitol Services in Lansing to provide lobbying. We no longer split the fee and no longer have MCA provide this service. This decision will allow us to be focused and pro-active in dealing with our needs as mental health professionals.
- Noah Smith, who is a partner in Capitol Services and our lobbyist representative, arranged a high level meeting with the Department of Community Health along with me and PPL co-chairs Dr. Sarah Sue Schaeffer and Dr. Irene Ametrano. We initiated this meeting based on critical concerns of counselors being discriminated against regarding accessibility on a range of issues. This meeting has great potential to advance our cause. It's all about access which translates into, integration of counselors into jobs, and greater options for students seeking internships. Most importantly making a living doing what we love. Watch for announcements on the next steps toward full inclusion of LLPC/LPC's as full partners in Community Health service delivery.
- CSI Oakland University and CSI Eastern Michigan University have collaborated with MMHCA on presenting meaningful events. We co-sponsored on Private Practice Essentials with OU and have a conference planned at EMU for January 23 - Grief and Loss Over The Life Span.
- Our highly successful Supervision and Psychometric Trainings - Enrollment is open for the winter season.
- o 2015 Supervision Training Deadline for enrollment is January 31, 2015
- o 2015 Psychometric Training details coming soon, Saturdays in February, March, and April
- Treasurer: Linda Oxford decided to step down from the Board. We appreciate her innovative ideas and energy. She improved our treasury and helped focus our strategic planning. We thank her for her service and wish her well. Consider registering for her outstanding half day workshop on Mindfulness. There is still room. It will be held Friday January 16 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Auburn Hills. Register online. www.mmhca.org.
- We have several workshops and breakfast networking meetings planned for this year.
Watch our website for details and to register. Also note changes to our website to make registering for events more user friendly.
- Regional Networking breakfasts will be held around the state, including February 14 at the Ashland Theological Seminary-Detroit Center in Southfield, and May 16 at Jimi's Royal Oak.
We are seeking hosts or connecting with counselors who have indicated an interest to hold a Breakfast Networking Meeting. The target areas are Flint, Saginaw, Kalamazoo, Traverse City, Petoskey, Ann Arbor/ Ypsilanti, Lansing, Novi, downriver/Dearborn, and Detroit. Please contact me so we can set them up. The topic for these breakfasts is: The State of The Profession and opportunities to network and making connections with peers.
Watch for the following:
- DSM-5 workshops which will also include training in the use of the ICD 10 CM Codes which will go into effect 10-01-2015. Two are scheduled for early 2015. Spring Arbor University on Friday April 10, 2015 and Central Michigan University Friday May 01, 2015.
- New workshops offerings based on members requests are being planned.
Private Practice Essentials full day conference, Integrated Care full day Conference, Leadership Development Conference, Surviving Trauma Counseling Strategies Conference and ICD 10 CM advanced training.
- Expansion of our social media capabilities.
Please check our website www.mmhca.org for details regarding above, and to register for workshops. We value your membership. Please join us or renew your membership so we can keep advocating for you and our profession. Check with us to see if your membership is lapsed.

You will learn directly how mindfulness improves your ability to stay present in the midst of difficulties, contributes to well-being and personal development, and deepens your capacity for compassion. The workshop introduces both formal and informal mindfulness practices as well as the triad of awareness - body sensation, thought and emotion. Fried Chicken and Grief
This is the time of year for reflection of the past year and settling on resolutions for the New Year. After the fun holidays that included eating foods that come from our many traditions and cultures (i.e. fried potato pancakes, turkey, ham or roast beast, not to mention sweet cookies and candies), it is no surprise that many of us resolve to change our eating habits. In past years I have resolved to give up dairy (probably a good idea since I am lactose intolerant), sugar (don't we all have a sweet tooth), wheat ( I know it is a fad but I really do feel better) and the list goes on. I was thinking this year that perhaps it is time I try to give up fried chicken. Anyone who knows me well, knows how much I love fried chicken, be it KFC, homemade, or Popeye's, I just love it. Seriously, fried chicken can't be good for you after a certain age and there are heart health issues in my family tree! I was trying to analyze why it is such a comfort food for me, and I had one of those aha! moments that are usually reserved for our therapy clients. About 5 months before my mother died from liver cancer in 1984, my fiancee, Paul and I ate at a restaurant with my mom and dad. It was the last time I ever shared a meal with her at a restaurant. Can you guess what we ate? We were at a KFC in Houston, Texas. We can learn about ourselves as we assimilate the losses in our lives, no matter how many years have gone by. Grief and loss are universal conditions that counselors need to be ready for. Come see what you can learn at the Grief and Loss Conference at EMU on January 23rd. I will be there; when you see me, ask me if I've eaten any fried chicken lately.

The Professional Advocacy Committee: Building Intra-Counseling Relationships
By: Jaclynn Croyle, M.A. Counseling Student, and Professional Advocacy Committee Chair
The Theta Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) recently announced starting a Professional Advocacy Committee. This committee maintains that in order to help our clients and advocate for them, we need to advocate for our profession first. While we need to bring awareness to what we do and the benefits we offer, we also need to help ensure that the profession has financial stability. The Professional Advocacy Committee will focus on the following areas of advocacy: promoting professional identity, promoting legislative policy supporting the counseling profession, and marketplace recognition. The committee recognizes that the profession will be stronger when there is unity among various counseling specialties. Mental health, family and couple, career, addiction and school counselors are all counselors passionate about helping people, just in different areas of life. Therefore, part of our mission includes building intra-professional relations, which includes co-sponsoring events with other Michigan counseling associations.
Recently, the Theta Chapter co-sponsored with the Michigan Mental Health Counseling Association (MMHCA) the very successful Private Practice Essentials workshop. The Private Practice Essentials workshop helped promote our profession by educating counselors on ways to be paid by insurance companies for providing services to clients. The workshop addressed requirements for billing third party insurance carriers, which included getting a National Provider Identifier (NPI) number and applying for the Council for Affordable and Quality Healthcare (CAQA) number. Strategies for receiving insurance reimbursement were discussed, such as a process known as "incident to" billing. Finally, scope of practice and sound business practices were covered.
Dr. Donald Deering, the current President of MMHCA, and Jim Blundo, the current Executive Director of MMHCA, donated their time as speakers for the workshop. Their generosity allowed for the profits to be split between the two organizations and go towards future continuing education events for counselor passionate about helping people in all areas of life. Upwards of 40 people attended the workshop. CSI and the Professional Advocacy Committee are looking forward to continuing a relationship with the MMHCA, the first of many partnerships with professional associations. Future co-sponsoring of events will allow us to work together to give back to the professional counselors in Michigan.
The next CSI event occurs March 6, 2015 where the Theta Chapter has the pleasure of co-sponsoring the annual conference at Oakland University with MMHCA. The theme of the 2015 conference is 'creativity in counseling'. A key note speaker will start the morning off. Lunch will be served and the afternoon will be full of multiple breakout sessions. The Theta Chapter is excited to have MMHCA on board as a partner for the 2015 conference.
Please contact Jaclynn Croyle, the Professional Advocacy Committee Chair, at jrcroyle@oakland.edu if you would like to get involved in this new initiative.
