Out of My Mind
Those involved in networking know the meaning of an "ask". For those that do not, this will be a meaningful lesson about marketing. I have an ask! Our membership has reached 600. On behalf of the MMHCA Board we sincerely thank you for your membership. Each of you is an ambassador for MMHCA, LLPC/LPC's and allied health professionals. Please invite your peers to join our army of Michigan mental health professionals.
I am asking you to invite one mental health professional to join online.
Numbers = Economic and Political Clout for Mental Health Services!
- To the members who have lapsed or dropped, please consider renewing your membership. We need you to help with our agenda to create a living wage, protect and advance public policy, and to be the voice of mental health in our state. You are needed now more than ever!
- We will be producing a variety of one-day trainings, half-day workshops, networking breakfasts, and evening networking events. These will take place all around the state in 2015.
- Please go to our website www.mmhca.org for the latest information, to read about upcoming events, and to begin to register for workshops and trainings.
Events to watch for in 2015 and 2016.

"Being it" - Experiential Mindfulness Workshop
Presenter: Linda Oxford, Owner of Awakening Health LLC
The media is full of stories and hype about mindfulness - and you can't really understand it without "being it." This half-day experiential workshop will guide you through cultivating greater awareness, creating a personal practice and using mindfulness in your work with others. You will learn directly how mindfulness improves your ability to stay present in the midst of difficulties, contributes to well-being and personal development, and deepens your capacity for compassion. The workshop introduces both formal and informal mindfulness practices as well as the triad of awareness - body sensation, thought and emotion. You will learn new skills for self-regulation and access your innate powers for healing, connection and happiness.

DSM-5 WORKSHOPS
DSM-5: The Diagnostic Manual for the Future
Plus ICD 10 CM codes (requirement delayed until 10/2015)
MMHCA is pleased to announce upcoming
locations for DSM-5 workshops.
- April 10, 2015 at Spring Arbor University in Spring Arbor, Click here to register for April 10, 2014 workshop
- May 1, 2015 at Central Michigan University in Mt Pleasant
We hope you will take advantage of this amazing opportunity. Our workshops are fairly valued. We have contracted each location to handle 250 attendees. We are less costly than most DSM-5 workshops being presented in Michigan.
You will be able to purchase the DSM-5 Manual and other related materials. We are aware that you could choose other venues and webinars. Please check us out first.
Here are really important reasons for choosing MMHCA workshops.
- We are honored to have Jack Klott MSSA, LISW, LMSW, CACIII as our presenter. He is well known in the world of training. He is an expert on all things DSM. In addition, Jack is renowned
author and a wonderful presenter.
- These workshops are a great opportunity to network with fellow counselors.
- The last workshop attendance was 90% LLPC/LPC's
and the reviews were superb.
- The interactive process of face to face is always a better way to learn. Each attendee will receive the power point presentation in hard copy or electronically.
- Six NBCC credits are granted.
- Our workshops are Michigan based. Presenters and organizations from other states are not aware of Michigan licensing laws, rules, and requirements.
- Becoming a member of MMHCA will allow you to be part of professional organization that will enhance your career long term.

Counseling Helps Deal With A Host of Issues
Counseling can be an effective way to deal with life's many problems and challenges according to a recent HealthDay News article. Are they stating the obvious? No doubt. But this was the lead sentence for a government health news email feed I recently received where I work. Part of our role as professional counselors is to educate. We not only educate the clients we serve, but we can also educate the Physicians that are treating others who may benefit from counseling. If you are approaching health professionals to initiate a conversation about providing counseling services incident to their licenses, then you may want to peruse this article. ( www.healthfinder.gov/news) It went on to impart that the American Academy of Family Physicians says counseling may help pe ople cope with these issues:
Depression, grief or loss.
Intimacy, relationships, fertility, infidelity or divorce.
Anxiety, stress, anger, compulsion or addiction.
Problems with family, career or phobias.
Eating disorder, illness or chronic pain.
Domestic violence.
As a MMHCA member you can find information on the incident to billing concept in an article on the Members Only page.

Avoiding Liability - Revisiting Some Basics
Article by Richard S Leslie, J.D. for CPH and Associates' website which is devoted to providing mental health practitioners with important and interesting information related to their practices. It is their hope and desire that with increased usage of this section of their website, practitioners will be a better able to avoid getting into legal or ethical difficulties by being more likely to spot the legal issue facing them. Once the practitioner realizes that a legal or ethical issue exists, he or she is hopefully resourceful enough to get a timely and reliable answer. Practitioners can, among other things, consult with their professional association. Click here for entire article on Avoiding Liability - Revisiting Some Basics.
