DSB Connections
|
What's the difference between being in a rock band and running a business? Not much, says Barry LaBov, founder, president, and CEO of LaBov and Beyond Marketing Communications, Inc. According to Labov, running a band or a business is all about understanding and utilizing the unique talents and motivations each member brings to the team.
LaBov, Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year (twice) and IPFW alumnus, presented at the Doermer School of Business (DSB) Connections event October 21 at the IPFW Alumni Center. LaBov started in the music field by creating his own rock band and was featured on the 1970s hit show American Bandstand. Although he dismisses his success in the rock'n'roll world, (according to LaBov they "sold well under a million copies") his musical talents became the platform of his future success in the business world.
Soon, LaBov & Beyond began writing catchy and creative jingles for nationally recognized companies as well as creating "on-hold" music for businesses. From sharing old music videos to emphasizing service and relationships in his current marketing strategies for internationally known clients, LaBov recounted his journey from the music industry to the world of business with a powerful and unique presentation.
LaBov, who received a General Studies degree from IPFW, spoke about the value of such a degree and how it shaped his entrepreneurial success. He also mentioned the importance of having mentors who encouraged his success and kept him on track.
DSB Connection events focus on creating connections between students, alumni, and friends of the university. The LaBov event offered a question-and-answer segment as well as break-out sessions for attendees to networking.
Come join the next DSB Connections event February 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Steel Dynamics Keith E. Busse IPFW Alumni Center. The event will feature a panel discussion with local business leaders and focus on business ethics.
