MAKE YOUR MEETINGS
MORE PRODUCTIVE WITH GROUND RULES

When we participate with others in a group, be it a sporting event, a family dinner, or even walking on the street, we abide by certain guidelines. For example, at a sporting event outlandish dress is accepted in support of the team. Where else could one wear the Wisconsin cheese head? At this time of year, as we participate in various family holiday gatherings, we adhere to family traditions of certain kinds of food, Thanksgiving turkey being the obvious one. Walking on a street in Manhattan requires a predominately straight line at a relatively fast pace.

In all these situations we use such guidelines or ground rules to clarify our rules of engagement and how we will behave with each other.  Why then don't we use ground rules more often in the dreaded business meeting? We should begin every meeting with ground rules. They don't have to be fancy, nor do they have to be long, but just as with walking on a crowded street, they provide guidelines for efficiency and effort.
