Fans and Followers, a word from our President:

It is always fun getting myself organized, but it is much more satisfying to work with a client and know that organizing their home or life will change their lives.

Our 2016 DFW Organized Home Contest submission is now closed. We have narrowed the selection process to 5 homes as I am writing this and will announce our winner between March 11th-13th via our Facebook page. The winner will receive FREE home organizing by our entire team of organizers.

For our Tyler, Texas fans, we are excited to announce that we have a full house for our upcoming Get Organized! workshop (50+ registered) in April on organizing your paper clutter. If you are interested in attending, contact us and we will put you on our waiting list.

Since tax time is almost here, I have been working on my own taxes and for one of our sons who is attending college while living at home. This month he and I talked about setting up a budget in Excel and using a highly rated site called Mint.com. Mint is a site that even professional CPAs use to import account transactions to indicate spending in all areas of life. With alerts on spending and budgeting options, it is a great product for young adults and adults alike.

Kym Calloway, a GO Affiliate Organizer, and I attended a Houzz networking event in Dallas and saw some of the latest home décor trends. Pictured left is Kym next to a roll up medicine cabinet by Roben. I just love storage and totally love this product. A must have if you are remodeling your bathroom.

I look forward to next month showing you our team's work on the DFW home we select to get organized. See our Facebook page for the announcement of the winner and if you missed entering this year, watch for information on our 2017 contest.

Happy Organizing,

New Signiture

Be Prepared
Are you prepared for an emergency? Severe weather or a power outage can happen at any time of the year. Take the time to get organized now before the unexpected comes, so that you will be ready to keep your family safe. Here are four steps to getting prepared:
  1. Equip your home with a NOAA All-Hazards Radio that can be set to notify you of weather alerts in your specific area. This is the fastest way to receive weather warnings when a few minutes can make a big difference to your safety. You can also use apps on your phone that give you site-specific warnings, such as WeatherBug and FEMA Mobile App
  2. Register for emergency notifications within your town. Contact your police department, city hall, or sheriff's office if you live outside the city for directions on enrolling in this service. When you sign up, you can choose to receive text, phone, and/or email message alerts whenever a non-weather emergency occurs in your area. This could be a gas leak, flooding, evacuation, or public health concern. At the time of registration, you can let first responders know of unique conditions at your home should they need to enter in an emergency. For example, someone in your household uses a wheelchair, someone is hearing-impaired, your dog may bite, or you have a storm shelter that should be checked after a disaster. Note that this service is not for weather alerts, so you want to be signed up for both types of warnings.
  3. Keep a document kit and a supply kit ready and current. A document kit is simply a large zip-top waterproof bag that contains important files you will need in an emergency. It should include copies of your driver license, Social Security card, passport, insurance policies, auto titles, medical prescriptions, and contact information for doctors and family. Store your document kit with your supply kit. A supply kit is a portable plastic bin or backpack containing supplies to sustain each person and pet in your household for three days. Food, water, first aid supplies, medicines, batteries, flashlights, and similar items should be included. Adjust the contents to meet your family's needs (diapers for baby, for example). Keep in mind that you will want to rotate these items periodically to keep them fresh. You can mark this task on your calendar so it will not be forgotten.
  4. Make a plan for emergency communication. If your family is not together at the time of a disaster, you need to know how you will "check in" to be certain that everyone is safe. Designate a relative or family friend who lives in another state or far away from your area whom you will all call. Know where will you meet to find each other; this is especially important for children, who do better when they have talked about it beforehand.
You can prepare your family by working in small, manageable tasks, gathering items that you likely have at home already. Get organized before the next emergency.
Organize Your Home Inventory
Be ready for a disaster by making a home inventory. This important task can help you file a quick and accurate insurance claim, verify losses for income taxes, or just make sure you have the appropriate amount of homeowner's insurance.

The task of compiling your home inventory can seem overwhelming, but it will be well worth your time and easy to amend as your possessions change. Use free online tools such as Know Your Stuff or Home Gallery that will organize the inventory for you by room or category, allow you to upload photos of items or receipts, and most importantly, store the information safely on the cloud.

Schedule time in your calendar to begin organizing your home inventory one room at a time so that you will have one less worry should a disaster ever occur.
Organize Your Taxes
tax_day.jpg This is the time of year to work on income tax returns. Here are a few steps we recommend to keep your paperwork organized and easy to handle.

Manage your receipts. You can do this physically or electronically, whichever system will be simpler for you to actually use. Keep all receipts that pertain to your income taxes in one place as you make purchases throughout the year. If you keep digital records, you will scan or snap a picture of the receipt. Choose from several helpful apps, including Evernote and One Receipt, which can also be trained to grab receipts from online purchases.

Manage your files. Depending on your needs, you may keep a file (physical or electronic) for charitable contributions, another for pay stubs, etc., or you may just need one file per tax year to hold everything. Keep in mind that after you file the tax return, you will rarely look at it again, so you are probably better off with fewer file folders and a simple system.

Manage your records. How long you should hold onto a document depends on what it is. Lorraine's Personal Paper Retention Guidelines sheet gives recommended times for many financial records. In most cases, tax-related documents should be kept for 7 years. Once you have sent in this year's tax return and are storing the supporting paperwork, take the time to remove from your files your oldest records that you no longer need to keep.

For your safety, always shred any paperwork that has personally identifying information, including your signature, which could be forged. Look for crosscut shredders on sale during March and April.
Emergency Power to Communicate
We rely on our phones and tablets a lot, but especially in emergencies. Make sure you have plenty of power to communicate with the outside world when the power goes out.

The high-capacity Jackery Titan rechargeable battery has two USB ports to charge two devices at once in a surprisingly short time. It can fully recharge a smart phone about 6 or 7 times before needing to be recharged itself overnight.

Did you know that in an emergency, it is a good idea to communicate by text or even social media? Preparedness experts tell us that after you phone your out-of-state designated emergency contact to let him or her know you are safe, it is better for you to stay off the phone lines, which often get jammed. Instead, you can communicate by texting or on Facebook, Twitter, Next Door, or other online sites. Most cities monitor their own social media pages, so you can communicate non-emergency needs there as well.

Savvy Ways to Save
creditcards_scatter_laptop.jpg Each month we bring our readers a Savvy Way to Save. This month is a list of interest-free credit cards. If working on your taxes and personal finances has made you realize how much money you are spending on interest, you may want to take advantage of one of these offers to transfer your balance and pay no interest until 2017.

And, if too much debt is causing you stress in your household, consider using strategies from Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University. It will take some effort, but his techniques can help you get your finances organized so you can get out from under the burden of debt.
