Fans and Followers, a word from our President:

The last time I wrote to you, my husband and I were about to fly out to see our youngest son at Army Basic Training Family Weekend. It was so exciting and yet so emotional for us all. My son and I had written in letters about how it would feel to see each other again. We later reflected that our first glance and hug was just like in the movies when a solider sees his family for the first time. He honored us for our 3 day visit as he tried to serve and care for us, while we at the same time wanted to take care of him. One of the many things I have learnedCorby as an Army Mom is that the military needs to hire us to help them get organized. We will see our son again in a week for his graduation and then he is off to airborne school, where he will be learning to parachute out of planes.

Although not parachuting out of planes, our organizers have jumped into organizing for back to school. In Tyler, Get Organized! attended our first East Texas State Fair on Senior Day and a back to school event in the community. In DFW, we had a very festive fall booth at Murphy Maze Days.

Our FREE Christmas Decorating Contest is over and we will be announcing the winner on our Facebook page this weekend. The winner will have their home turned into a Winter Wonderland by our organizing elves in exchange for allowing us to train new decorators. Keep watching our monthly newsletters for opportunities like this throughout the year. We continue to train our team to keep us the best in the DFW and Tyler, Texas areas.

Lastly, while I was looking for organizing ideas for my own small spaces, I came across some great ideas that I will share with you from the Better Homes and Garden website. I hope this inspires you to organize your small spaces, creating a cozy and inviting home.

Until next month, go get organized!

Start Organizing Now for Christmas
If the thought of getting ready for Christmas sounds stressful to you right now, then maybe you need a plan to help you stay organized and in control this year. After all, Christmas is meant to be a time of celebration. With a little planning, you can reduce the stress that leads up to the big holiday and make it a little more joyful for you and your family.

Lorraine recommends starting a Christmas Planner, which is a notebook that keeps all your lists, menus, and planning ideas for the holiday in one place. Once you create it, you will reuse and update it from year to year, simplifying Christmas so that it is less work and more peace. Print out these worksheets now and put them in a three-ring binder to guide you in accomplishing the many tasks that you choose to do at Christmas. Add dividers and page protectors to make your planner more organized and useful. If you are tech savvy, you can keep records in digital files as long as you save them in a place that will be accessible in future years.

The plan begins the last week of October. By working a little each week, you will reduce the stress that comes with all the activities in December. While you may not make all your worries go away, at least you will make steps toward a more organized Christmas.

Back Porch Living

Now that cooler fall weather is here, many of us will be inspired to spend more time in the backyard.

Try these tips to keep your porch or patio organized for your favorite outdoor activities.
  • Store tools for grilling in a container under the grill so they stay clean. Depending on the size of the container you use, you can store more than just tongs and spatulas. You can keep outdoor serving dishes, napkins, etc. there too. If you are a crafty person, you can repurpose an old wooden box to hold your tools.
  • Keep extra pot holders and towels under the grill so they are easily accessible as things heat up or get messy.
  • A baker's rack is very helpful on the porch for placing dishes, food, or drinks out of the way and off the already-crowded dining table.
  • Add a supply of bubbles, chalk, and similar outdoor toys to keep the kids entertained. Store these on an outdoor shoe shelf protected from the elements so the kids can easily reach them. You could also store them in a bin on the bottom shelf of the baker's rack.
  • Include a trash can with a lid on the porch to keep flies from becoming a problem.
  • Look for outdoor furniture that doubles as storage for your patio items, such as a bench seat that can store cushions when winter arrives.

Be aware that some of these items are considered seasonal, so they are on clearance in stores now. Keep an eye out for a good deal to make your back porch more organized, so you can enjoy these beautiful, crisp autumn days!

Coat Closet Clean-out
October is a great time to get ready for the first cold front that makes us frantically search for warmer gear.

One thing you can do now is organize your coat closet. Take out all the coats, jackets, scarves, gloves, hats, umbrellas, and other accessories and get ready to purge. If you have an additional storage area for winter items, be sure to move everything to one place.

Assess each item that you have based on your current family needs. Are any items too small? Missing a matching glove? In need of a cleaning? Do you have too many of something? Is a button missing or an umbrella broken? Throw away what is beyond use, set aside what you intend to repair or get cleaned, and donate items that have not been used in several years. You will be happier with the extra room rather than letting the old, unwanted items take up valuable space.

Now look at what is left. Does everyone have what they will need for cold weather? Make note of items you want to buy so you can take advantage of sales when you find them.

Decide where items will be stored in the closet. Hangers are great, but often hooks on the inside of the closet door work well when kids (or adults) are in a hurry. Another option is a coat tree that can stay near the front or back door.

Store gloves, hats, and similar items in smaller containers. You can either sort by item or containerize by individual in the family. Simple open-top bins or baskets work well. A stacking system will save space in a small closet. The goal is to keep the items off the floor yet easily stored and retrieved by each member of the family.

Finally, schedule a time to get repairs or cleaning done and drop off the donations. Keep in mind that washing kids' coats once a month during the season is important. Kids get dirty, have runny noses, and spill food on coats just like clothing. Check them often and make sure they look and smell fresh. With a little proactive work, you will be ready for the cold winds before they arrive. You also might find enough money in your pockets from last year to pay for cleaning an old jacket or buying a brand new one.
