Fans and Followers, a word from our President:

We are having a great summer at Get Organized!, recently hiring one new organizer and planning to bring another on board in a few weeks. Business is good and I am very excited about our growth through added services and new clients.

As many of you know, we have expanded our services to the Tyler, Texas area. The local CBS 19 TV channel in Tyler will be doing a segment on Get Organized! and giving a makeover to a mom. We will film on July 21, 2015 and will send our fans a link once it airs. If you have family or friends in the Tyler and surrounding areas, please recommend Get Organized!

This fall we will be promoting our newest GO Talk on Senior Downsizing. This presentation will be for senior citizens and their families, sharing ways to de-clutter, sell unwanted items, organize photos, and create a family downsizing plan. I always encourage seniors to make decisions now, so others do not end up making the decisions for you later.

A few weeks ago, my youngest left for Army basic training. The morning we let him go, I cried like a baby, and my son said, "Mom, I told myself I would not cry, but I may start if you keep crying." After about a week we received two letters from him in the mail. What a joy to read them. My husband said that I looked like a raccoon from smeared mascara. I guess I should start wearing waterproof mascara until my son returns.

I had to laugh when I read the part in his letter about his first duty assignment: overseeing 20 cadets in his company doing cleaning duties (bathrooms). Although no child really likes chores, he is thanking me now for all those chore charts we had as a family and for teaching him how to clean toilets, baseboards, soap scum and more. Who knew it would come in handy in the U.S. Army and that he would be proud to have this responsibility? I am writing him to remind him that I will be returning his chore duties to him when he returns home.

Mom an Dad's keep in mind summer is the perfect time to teach your children how to handle simple chores. Toddlers as young as two can pick up toys and put them in a basket, helping mom and dad keep the floors from looking like a landfill. If you need some ideas on what type of chores to give your kids, here is an Age Appropriate Chore list we give our clients.

Until next month GO get organized,

Caring for Clothing
Have you ever wondered how to read those cryptic symbols on garment care labels? They are designed to be easy to understand, as long as you know the codes. Here is a simple chart to explain what the symbols mean, and a full chart showing every possible instruction you may see on a care label. Get organized, print, and post these charts in your laundry room so you will never be in doubt about how to clean an item.

An important part of caring for your clothes is finding the right products to get rid of stains. We like OxyClean Laundry Stain Remover for general stains, especially blood. For more specialized removal, Carbona Stain Devils come in various formulas to attack specific stains including ink, rust, or make-up. You can corral these bottles in a small storage basket to keep your laundry room neat.

Do you use a mesh bag in the laundry? It works well for protecting lingerie from getting snagged on other garments in the wash, and it keeps tiny baby clothes from getting lost in the load. The bags come in various sizes and can also protect swimwear and tights from damage in the wash. When not in use, fold the bag and keep in the same storage basket as the stain remover bottles.

Organizing Your Scarves

Need a way to keep your scarves organized in your closet? One of our favorite organizing tools is IKEA's Komplement hanger. It can hold as many as 28 scarves yet takes up no more space than a regular hanger.

The steel rings are strong, sturdy, and wrapped with yarn that will not snag your scarves and keeps them from slipping off the hanger. Priced at $8, this is an affordable way to organize your scarves, ties, shawls, and belts.

An Organized Move
If you are moving soon, do not take the clutter with you. Unlike professional organizers, movers are trained to pack what they see. There is no grouping of like items together in a box or getting rid of plastic containers with missing lids.

If you are going to be doing the packing yourself, here are a few tips:
  • Make sure to pull out clothing and hygiene items you will need while you are in transition. You would not want everything to get packed and then have to go buy items that you need for everyday use.
  • Save space and boxes by using your suitcases to pack bedding or clothing.
  • Packing paper is your best investment. It is cheap and can save you the stress that comes with broken items. Buy paper from your box company or office supply stores and wrap everything, including wooden cutting boards and metal muffin pans.
  • Pack dishes and platters on their side, NOT flat; they are strongest on their side.
  • Use plastic zipper bags for holding small items like office supplies and hair accessories. It will keep them from dropping to the bottom of the box or spilling out when you unpack.
  • Label each box on the top and on the side. List the room and basic contents of the box.
  • When the movers are unloading the boxes, have them place them in a central location instead of delivering them to the labelled room. Of course, heavy boxes, boxes going to a second floor, and boxes to be opened first can be put in their appropriate rooms.
  • The best option may be to call Get Organized! to do it all for you, including complete home set-up.
Family Meal Time
Eating meals together strengthens family ties and improves mental health. Several studies have shown that teens who eat meals with their families five times a week are far less likely to smoke, drink alcohol, or use drugs than those who eat only two or three meals a week with the family. Their level of tension and stress is lower and they are more likely to perform better in school. In fact, dining with the family is one of the single best predictors of adolescent mental and physical health, sense of kinship, and healthy self esteem.

Why? These students who eat meals with their families regularly spend about 30 minutes in conversation with their parents. Their time is relaxed, they listen to other family members, and are listened to when dining. They make connections and absorb more of the family's values.

Do you want to help ensure your teen's good health? Here are some ideas for improving the family dining experience.
  • Make it a priority by scheduling time for a family meal. Sometimes this will mean flexing around ball practices, rehearsals, and other activities.
  • Do not worry about how fancy the food is; even take-out or dining in a restaurant will work as long as you spend time together in conversation.
  • Breakfast or lunch is just as good as dinner to dine together if that fits your schedule.
  • Work on listening to each other and keeping the conversation non-judgmental.
  • Talk about your day, current events, or even 'would you rather' questions.
And breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts.
