The "GO" Newsletter

This month we are focused on reducing and recycling to maximize space and save money. Often our clients keep boxes of stuff they no longer want but do not know options for disposal. We have some solutions to share with you in this newsletter.

Last month in March I presented two workshops at IKEA Dallas IKEAcalled Closet Talk. I showcased the PAX system and gave insider tips on organizing closets. During
my talk, Frisco Style Magazine came by and did an interview with me that is in their current online issue. They also interviewed one of our clients as well for the article and she gave us a rave review.

Personally, I enjoyed a lazy spring break at home and at our family property where our car got stuck in the mud and we ended up walking the rest of the way in the middle of the night to our cabin. We felt a little like the folks from the Walking Dead show.

Read about our upcoming events below and if your group is looking for a speaker, I'd be honored to talk about getting organized!

Home Recycling Holders

Recycling in the home is easy when you have good tools
. Here are a few products made just for holding paper, plastics, glass, and metal recycling items until you take them to the curb.

This Rev-A-Shelf Pull-Out double trash can holds trash in one side, recycling in the other. Alternatively, it can hold recycling in both bins to make sorting easier. The high-quality system easily installs in existing kitchen cabinets and uses standard 35-quart trash or recycling sacks.

These sturdy stackable bins are perfect for the garage and especially useful if you have to sort materials in a number of bins. They also save floor space since they stack vertically.

If you would rather have a smaller, stand-alone recycle bin in your kitchen, here is a two-sided stainless steel model that holds a total of 12 gallons and features a fingerprint-proof finish and quiet closing lid.
Recycling the Hard-to-Recycle

Get organized with your recycling. You will find that not all items are allowed to be put out for curb-side recycling. For those hard-to-recycle items, here are some solutions:

Do you have old, unneeded electronics? This type of clutter collects quickly in a home if not disposed of when it no longer serves a purpose.

white_mouse_keyboard.jpg
In Texas, the law requires that any manufacturer selling new computer equipment must also provide a free and convenient way to collect and recycle the consumer's old equipment. Here is a list by brand for computer recycling, including laptops, keyboards, and mice. Additionally, Staples and Best Buy recycle most electronics when you bring them to the store. Remember to remove all personal data from your devices before recycling.

Here is a similar list for recycling TVs, which cannot be set out for curb pick up in many cities.

If your medicine cabinet is cluttered with expired medications, the DEA and many communities no longer run drug take-back programs. We did find one resource at Walgreens that you purchase for $3.99 and add water which neutralizes virtually all drugs. Usually your safest and most convenient way to dispose of old or expired drugs is by taking the pills or liquids out of the bottles, mixing them with used coffee grounds, kitty litter, or other unappetizing waste, placing them in a sealed bag or container, and throwing it out with the regular trash.

For other items, such as batteries, paint, and home chemicals, find a hazardous waste collection site in your city or county.
Kitchen Composting

If you recycle vegetable peels and similar items from your kitchen to put in an outdoor compost bin, you may want a container like this that holds food scraps neatly and odorlessly until you take them out to the backyard compost pile.

For more information on making compost for your garden, see this handy information sheet with instructions for setting up and maintaining a compost pile.
Closet Space-saver
Are you weeding out your wardrobe to get ready for spring? If you need new hangers, these fuzzy Huggable Hangers® have a narrow profile, giving you more closet space. The texture also stops clothing from slipping off and falling on the floor. Plus, their neutral color conceals dust so your closet stays neat looking. Finger clips for skirts and cascading hooks are also available. Many stores like Bed, Bath and Beyond sell a generic brand which works and looks the same, but saves you money.
The Brain Dump
Do you do a daily brain dump? It is a great habit that helps busy people get things done. Using a bound notebook, make a list of all the things that you want to do, short-term or long-term, no matter if you will do it yourself or delegate it. Write down everything that comes to mind to clear out mental clutter.

Next, look at your calendar and begin plugging things in. Use a pencil on a paper calendar or use an electronic calendar on a large screen so it will be easy to move items around and see the big picture all at once. If you do this on the small screen of a phone, you may struggle
with organizing your listed items.

Each time you add something to the calendar, think of what else needs to be done with it. For example, for a wedding you will need to buy a gift or take a suit to the cleaners. Schedule these accompanying tasks on your calendar at the same time, counting enough days backward to give yourself adequate time to complete. You will be amazed at how much less frazzled you become by doing this.

Do a brain dump daily. Keep in mind that it is a work in progress, and your list will gradually get shorter as you get caught up. Soon you will be able to go to bed at night with less stress and more confidence.
