The "GO" Newsletter

As fall approaches, Get Organized! is gearing up for our busy season, both with organizing services and educational presentations. The value of being organized has become evident not only in adults seeking help, but through school districts looking for ways to educate parents and students in the area of organization.
Recently I was interviewed by a representative from the Highland Park School District as they searched for an organizer to do presentations on organization to parents. I have noticed an increase in school districts looking for solutions to a high level of tardies and absences and the connection to the overcommitted and stressed out students walking through their doors.
Teachers and administrators know the issue starts at the home and with the parents, and that the end result is a stressed out and unfocused student.
In mid June, I was selected to work with HPISD on a program to help bring focus and resources to this issue. Planning will start later this month for the program that will be held on October 16th. It is my hope that other Districts and parent groups will follow their lead.
On a personal note, I have just returned from a
vacation on South Padre Island with my family. It was such a sweet and fun time. We stayed up till 2 am every night, lit fireworks on the beach, and jet skied.
Our goal was to cook most of our meals, but I was not going to be the only cook. Two of my sons brought friends on the trip, so I teamed them up to cook and clean. I requested a menu for two meals from each team, created a shopping list, and made plans to shop when we arrived at our condo.
I scheduled meals for each team to cook and then clean up. It was so organized that our condo stayed clean, we were well fed, and I did not have to cook the entire trip.
Pictured above (left) is my 17 year old with his friend cooking breakfast. They served us eggs, bacon, sausage (a little under cooked), biscuits, pancakes (awesome), and cinnamon rolls. They learned to work together and improve on a domestic skill that their future wives will love. I am so proud of my family.
Have a fun summer!

Garage Organizing Mistakes

Summer seems to be the time when families clean out their garages. See our list of common mistakes people make when organizing a garage.

1. Not creating a functional space plan based on family lifestyle. This may include kids items easily accessible, gardening tools close to the outside door, and decorations in order and labelled by season in a less accessible area.

2. Not utilizing the space under a pull down attic door, assuming stored items will impede access to the attic. Think of storage tools that are on wheels and can be easily moved out of the way of the stairs.

3. Not using wall space from floor to ceiling or ceiling space above small cars. Research shelving units and overhead storage cages.

4. Not having an efficient system to temporarily hold items that need to be stored. Months later you realize you have a cluttered mess on your hands.

5. Inability to purge expired products or duplicate tools. In some cases, this behavior can lead to hoarding.

People put things where they fit,
not where they belong.

Gift Wrapping Solution
soap-gifts.jpg

Are you a frequent gift wrapper or wanna be gift wrapper? While cleaning out client's closets or under beds, we see lots of unused gift wrapping paper, ribbons, and tags with little or no storage system in place.

We have found an inexpensive solution for solving your gift wrap clutter. Instead of rolls and rolls of decorated paper, purchase a roll of brown contractor's paper at a hardware store such as Lowes and use it as the base for all your gift wrapping.

This paper is thicker than normal gift wrap so it does not tear as easily and can be used for any occasion. To add a little style to the package, tie on a ribbon or tape on a pre-made bow.

The best time to buy low cost ribbon is during after Christmas sales. Sam's has bulk ribbon at huge discounts after the holidays. If you want to get your gift wrapping center in order now, shop online at Uline. Here you will find a small but staple selection at very low cost.

If keeping gift tags organized is a challenge, try this Epson printer that prints on ribbon. Instead of a pile of cards, put your greeting on the ribbon itself.
How to Help a Hoarder

Yes, Get Organized! works with hoarders. Often it is a family member of the hoarder that starts the conversation and sets the appointment. Recently we worked with a senior that was about to get evicted from her home. The adult children living in another state hired us for the job to work directly with their mother.

While this process is never easy, we respected the client and her belongings and completed the job.

If you have a friend or family member that is a hoarder, here are a few tips for getting them help:

1. Never de-value their items. Everything is important to them.

2. Explain to the hoarder that their children or other family members will inherit the clutter.

3. If not cleaned out and organized, the kids may not know what is important to keep. Have the hoarder note what items are sentimental so others will know.

4. Organize a yard or garage sale for them, or help them sell items online. Many times they are willing to give up more if they can get a little cash from the sale.

5. Hire professionals who know how to work with hoarders. Many times working with family causes friction in the relationship. Let an unrelated party be the bad guy.
Life too Cluttered?

Learn to say "no" more. Do not wind up like Carol Clutter by saying "yes" to volunteer as president of an organization when your own home and life are out of control. Remember when you say "yes" to something, you automatically say "no" to something else. Often the "no" is taking care of your own life.
