This past month I was speaking to parents at a PTA program on how to organize their home, life, and of course, the kiddos. At the end of the program, a lady came up to me and told me how much she needed to get organized and that her husband had recently hired an organizer for a consultation.
My first thought was disappointment that we were not the company they hired. As the lady begin to tell me what the organizer had told her and her husband at the consultation, I kept thinking to myself, "Wow, this organizer is actually really good."
I could not contain my curiosity, so I asked her the name of the company, then the name of the organizer, and she could recall neither. Then I asked for her name, and once I heard it I knew she was actually OUR client. It was our company with the wonderful organizer who offered great ideas for her home. This blessed my heart to see the value of our efforts to help people.
There is so much joy in watching our Get Organized! brand become known in the DFW area. One of our organizers in Plano was in her yard pulling weeds one evening in her GO t-shirt and a car stopped and asked if she worked for Lorraine Brock. She replied yes and the driver said, "I did not know she had organizers in our neighborhood."
This is more evidence that our brand is spreading and we hope to continue to spread it all over Texas. |
May is Party Month Make the planning of your end-of-school-year or summer parties intentional and memorable! Some basic planning strategies apply to organizing any party, whether it be your child's class party, a birthday party, or a high school or college graduation celebration. Calendar: - Planning ahead is key. Send out party invitations by mail or email three to four weeks before the event. Families are busier than ever and you want your family and friends to save the date for your special celebration.
Location: - Think about the activities that will take place during the event. This will help you decide on the proper location depending on indoor/outdoor, cold/hot, messy or neat. Do you want to offer outdoor activities such as swimming, relay races, sports, or something unique such as a picnic on the grass or at the beach?
- What are the ages of the attendees? If you have younger kids, it is good to change up their environment. Indoor for some games, outside for the food or vice versa. Keep each event to a short time period and have extra activities planned in case some do not work out with your group. These ideas help keep the kids entertained and keep them out of trouble.
- How many people will be invited? Choosing the proper amount of people for the right amount of space is vital. If your house is too small you could choose a different location such as a local park that might include outdoor play areas, a local restaurant or activity place such as Chuck e Cheese, Main Event, Cosmic Jump, Pump it Up, or a water park such as Bahama Beach. For a graduation party you could consider a church fellowship hall, a neighborhood club house or a local community facility.

Supplies: - Decorations can be the life of the party! Choose your theme, decide your budget, and search for those unique party favors, tableware, balloons, flowers, festive banners, confetti and gift giveaways. You can research your options at Party City, or you can make your own by visiting Hobby Lobby for some great ideas. If you are crafty or a bit adventurous, visit Pinterest Party Ideas, or Graduation Parties for ideas that are outside the box.
- Party Favors: Junky toys and candy can be a waste of money and a disappointment to the recipients as well as their moms! Why not try something different? Find a craft idea that fits your theme. It creates a fun activity for the kids, and chances are, it won't be thrown in the trash when they return home. Some favor ideas include: painting a canvas bag, a baseball cap or an art apron; making jewelry; nail art (painting and sculpting ideas); face painting; making a kite; bubbles for small children; small games for those who are "on the go"; sticker or coloring books; friendship bracelets; ropes of different colors to learn knot making; etc. Choose something economical and functional and create a great party memory.
Food: - Drinks can be as easy as juice boxes, or as creative as one that matches the color scheme. Mix ginger ale with any color sherbet and add fresh fruit to make it more nutritious. It is easy, pretty, and it tastes great! Here is a helpful site of 10 Fun Drinks for kids.
- Desserts can be homemade, store bought, or ordered from a bakery. Time and money are the right questions to consider. The perfect dessert can be a fun family project, just a phone call away, or just a matter of running to the local grocery store. If ordering from a bakery, look for a local, well established one with a reputation for high quality at a reasonable price.
- Party Food: Visit Quick & Easy, Redbook, or Food Network for some great ideas.

Organizing School Papers
We have featured these tips many times in our past newsletters, but they are worth repeating.
As the school year ends, divide the papers in stacks per child. One stack for John and one stack for Sally. Then sort and organize each child's stack into the categories listed below. -
Artwork - Store in a large portfolio (smaller pieces can be mounted in groups on larger sheets), an accordion portfolio divided by age/grade level, or you can take pictures of the artwork, create an online photo album or scrapbook, then discard the originals. Artwork can be laminated and used as placemats for special family meals or framed and put on permanent display.
-
Everyday Papers - Important essays, tests, stories, handwriting, etc. can be kept in a manila envelope (9 x 12 or 10 x 13). Commit to only having one envelope per grade level. If it fits in the envelope, keep it. Label each piece with your child's name, year, and age/grade level. For long-term storage, purchase a plastic container for each child and store the envelopes (pre-K through graduation) in order throughout the years.
-
Portfolio - Awards, end of year report cards (many schools are going online, so remember to print them out), letters of recommendation, state tests, log/track volunteer hours, etc. Place theses items in a 3-ring binder in sheet protectors, with one binder for each child. Utilize these portfolios as your child gets older for creating a resume, applying for scholarships, college applications, etc.
Permanent Storage Spot An Artwork portfolio can be stored behind a bedroom headboard and added to throughout the year. As mentioned above, the envelopes for the Everyday Papers are placed in a container (one container per child) and can be kept in the attic, garage, or another out-of-the-way place. The Portfolio binder can be kept in the parent's home office or somewhere easily accessible for frequent updates.
