Greetings!

January has started with a bang for Get Organized! In fact, we had our first client of 2013 on New Year's Day. People were off work and ready to tackle long awaited projects and finally deal with the clutter.

However, over the Christmas break I received an email from a man honestly reaching out for help. His wife knew nothing of the email but he shared with me the effects of his family living in a household out of control with clutter. He said, "I have seen the morale of my home spiral downward...my family deserves a home to be proud of and not embarrassed". His email goes on to say that his girls can't even see their beds and that they have to make paths to walk around their bedroom.

Over the years we have seen so many households crushed from the stress of clutter. Clutter from physical things and emotional clutter created by busy schedules have brought chaos into homes and lives. These families have lost focus on what's important and tend to say "yes" to too many other things and not to their own home and family.

I remember as a young girl I would clean, dust, and vacuum my room. At times I would rearrange the furniture, but sometimes I would move around just the knickknacks to give it a fresh look. Although it was a small room, I would clean out drawers and closets to make the most of my space. When I went to bed at night, I slept in a well-made bed with the corners tucked in tight and a feeling of completeness as I shut my eyes. There was nothing left to be done for that day; no tasks or projects to complete. "My room" was ready for a new day. It felt so good to not only go to sleep with that feeling, but to awake to that same feeling.

I'm grown now and I don't have as many of those moments because my life has gotten so much bigger than my bedroom. But living a larger life doesn't create feelings in me like those of the gentleman that sent the email. Life can be good and in control more times than not. While I have not heard back from this gentleman, I hope he decides to get help somewhere before it's too late.

Learn to say "No" to too much this year and "Yes" to keeping it simple for you and your family.

New Habits
Changing your Life for the Better

2013 ResolutionsJanuary is the perfect time to get started with some new habits so you can change your life!

Have you ever heard that your thoughts become actions, your actions become new habits, new habits create a new lifestyle, and the new lifestyle changes your destiny? Making a positive change in just one area can often bring exciting benefits to your overall quality of life. Here are some suggestions:
  • Learn something new this coming year (craft, language, skill, etc.). There are lots of continuing education classes at your community college.
  • Change your mind about something from your past, and decide how you might deal with it differently from this point forward.
  • Forgive someone who has hurt you, and think about their positive qualities.
  • Think of one bad habit you could change: always arriving late, watching too much TV, never putting things away, etc. What steps will you take to accomplish this?
  • Name something in your life that seems to always be in crisis mode, and map out steps to equip you for success in this area.
  • Think of one character quality you would like to help develop in each of your children this coming year.
  • Look around throughout your day and try to notice someone in need of a kind word or gesture.
  • Think of one area (just one) of your house that needs organizing. Pen a date on your calendar and create a plan to change it.
  • Invite a friend or family member over for dinner a few times during the year, and make it a priority to get to know them better.
  • If you are married, think of some of the most special times in your relationship and plan a date night to reminisce.
  • Take one day of the week, schedule no appointments, and plan for some relaxation time.
  • Call an old friend from the past and reconnect.
  • Enjoy an old craft or hobby with a friend.
  • Sit down and write an old fashioned letter, or send a card to someone special.
  • Tell each member of your family, "I Love You" every day.
  • Have a family night and enjoy reading a good book out loud or playing a game.
  • Read your Bible through in a year. Learn to stop and pay attention to who, what, where, when, why, and how throughout the text. What truth can you apply to your life?

Enjoy this chance to change your life!

Laundry Piling Up?

Do your children use the floor for dirty clothes, instead of the laundry basket? Does your husband drop his clothes on the chair or bed? Can anyone get to the exercise equipment, or has it become the laundry catchall? If you struggle with when and how to get it all done and you live with a pile of clothing like Mount Everest always on the floor...we are here to help.

It has been said, "Doing one load of laundry per day is like paying the minimum on your credit card." Free up your weekends for something other than laundry duties.

Here are some helpful hints:
  1. Put a pretty basket (for guestrooms), or a hamper in every bedroom. Opt for one that has different compartments for sorting. Put an additional bag/container in the closet to separate the dry cleaning.
  2. Check the kid's rooms before school in the morning or before bed each night, to be sure their laundry is in its proper place. Choose a laundry basket for each person in the family in a fun color or shape to create interest.
  3. Offer a weekly reward for the children who succeed in getting their clothing in a hamper and/or sorted and put away. This stimulates healthy competition and the whole family benefits!
  4. Designate an evening or two each week for each person to bring their own basket to the laundry room before dinner.
  5. Throw  a load in the washer before dinner and put it in the dryer after the kitchen is clean, or before the kids go to bed. Fold clothes while watching TV before bed! If you have multiple loads, at least one is now completely done.
  6. In the morning, have the kids put away their own laundry. Older children/teens can do their own laundry or help by folding it. Small children can sort socks for matching. Teach them while they are young as the rewards are far reaching.
  7. Suggest to your husband that as the leader of the home, he can model good behavior by using his own basket. Remember kids are always watching. This
practice will have an impact on future generations!

Easy Steps Just for Kids:

Place a simple chart somewhere near their laundry basket.

  • Turn clothes inside out
  • Pull socks off from the toes
  • Have you checked your pockets?
  • (For older kids) Look for stains and spray them before throwing into the basket. (Keep a bottle of stain spray in their closet if age appropriate).
  • Remove your belts, pens, stickers, gum, and name tags!
