Looking Back To Move Forward

The ninth anniversary of June as National Caribbean American Heritage Month was celebrated by ICS with continued advocacy for the Caribbean American agenda. Through the commemoration of this month, America is reminded that its greatness lies in its diversity, with the contributions of Caribbean immigrants from founding father Alexander Hamilton, to journalist Malcolm Gladwell, who have shaped the American dream.

As a Program Intern for the Institute of Caribbean Studies, I was honored to be apart of the commemoration. I was especially pleased to have played a role in the production of the daily newsletters and provided assistance toward CAHM Legislative Week 2014.

Being able to visit places such as Capitol Hill, The White House, U.S Census Bureau & The State Department and interact with key policy makers made me realize that I as well as other young people, have the power to effect change. Our power just needs to be activated. We should no longer hold on to the belief that we are too young and/or inexperienced to have a voice about a cause that is important to us. This was solidified when I found out that one of the Advisors at the Office of Public Engagement at the White House, Ms. Heather Foster is a young Jamaican-American.

As a result of the mentorship of Dr. Claire A. Nelson, President of ICS, I was able to organize a Hellshire Beach Clean-Up for UN World Oceans Day -- June 8th with the Braeton Police Youth Club in Jamaica. Dr. Nelson guided me through the planning process and secured the participation of the National Environmental and Planning Agency (NEPA) as a Lead Sponsor. Under her tutelage, I was able to plan and execute a successful event. Specifically, a 4 Hour event with a total of 105 volunteers from ORGANIZATIONS A & B; who collected over one thousand pounds of debris from Hellshire Beach. This has given me a great sense of accomplishment and I am already looking forward to doing more.

As a Next Generation Leader and youth member of ICS I am compelled to search myself to find out what it is that I am able to do in order to help this institution to continue it's mission; and I am committed to give of my time and talent. I am also encouraged to do more and grow more under the guidance of ICS, and I am grateful to have been chosen as a LifeSEED Program Intern.

WALL OF FAME

General Colin Powell

Answering The Call of Duty

Colin Luther Powell is a U.S. General and Statesman. He was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989-1993) and Secretary of State (2001-2005), the first African American to hold either position.

The son of Jamaican immigrants, Powell grew up in the Harlem and South Bronx sections of New York City and attended the City College of New York (B.S., 1958), serving in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC). He entered the army upon graduation, served in Vietnam in 1962-63 and 1968-69, and then studied at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

In 1972 he took his first political position, as a White House fellow, and soon became an assistant to Frank Carlucci, then deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). He held various posts over the next few years, in the Pentagon and elsewhere, and in 1983 became senior military assistant to Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger.

In 1987 he joined the staff of the National Security Council as deputy to Carlucci, then assistant to the president for national security affairs. Late in 1987 President Ronald Reagan appointed Powell to succeed Carlucci. Early in 1989 Powell took over the Army Forces Command.

In April 1989 Powell became a four-star general, and in August President George Bush nominated him chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. As chairman, he played a leading role in planning the invasion of Panama (1989) and the Desert Shield and Desert Storm operations of the Persian Gulf crisis and war (August 1990-March 1991). He retired from the military in 1993, sparking speculation that he would enter politics. Although he decided not to run for president in 1996, he joined the Republican Party and spoke out on national issues.

In 2001 he was appointed Secretary of State by President George W. Bush. Powell's books include the autobiography My American Journey (1995; written with Joseph E. Persico) and It Worked for Me: In Life and Leadership (2012; written with Tony Koltz).

The small island nation of Montserrat has had a recent volcanic eruption (1995), which created a modern day Pompeii at the site of the former capital of Plymouth. Today when you visit the island you can observe this volcano as tourism returns to the island.
