Maya Angelou - Miss Calypso

Known for her poetry, memoirs and essays, very little is known of Dr. Maya Angelou's
early career as a dancer and calypso singer. Born Marguerite Annie Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Angelou became familiar with calypso at home from her Trinidadian
grandfather who had immigrated to the U.S. from Trinidad & Tobago on a banana boat
and jumped off in Tampa, Florida.

Angelou sang and danced calypso in local nightclubs in San Francisco in the 1950's. While
on tour with a production of Porgy and Bess, she spent some time in Paris, where she was
one of the first to perform calypso in nightclubs.

In 1957 she recorded an album titled Miss Calypso and appeared in the film Calypso Heat
Wave as the sultry Miss Calypso. She also headlined a calypso revue in Las Vegas and
New York and appeared in Geoffrey Holder's 1957 Caribbean Calypso Festival in Brooklyn.

Angelou's grandfather learned to roll cigars and took care of his family even though he was
an undocumented immigrant. He managed to evade immigration agents successfully all his
lifeas Angelou wrote in Mom & Me & Mom and "spoke often and loudly with pride at being an American citizen. No one explained to him that simply wanting to be a citizen was not
enough to make him one," she added.

This legendary daughter of the Caribbean passed away May 28, 2014.

WALL OF FAME

Kerry Washington

More than a "Scandal"

These days, it is almost impossible to go a day without hearing the name Olivia Pope!
She is a Washington, D.C. -based crisis manager who runs her own firm, Pope & Associates,
that specializes in political situations and the main character plays the role with breathtaking ease. Unless you live under a rock, yes, we are taking about the ABC hit series Scandal's
leading lady Kerry Washington.

Kerry Marisa Washington is an American actress born in The Bronx, NY to Valerie, a
professor and educational consultant, and Earl Washington, a real estate broker. Her father's family is African American, from South Carolina and Brooklyn, and her mother's family is Jamaican American, from Manhattan. She is also related to former Secretary of State Colin Powell through her mother.

She always had a love for the performing arts and started out with ballet lessons as a young
child. She later attended the Spence School in Manhattan, a prestigious private school. In
addition to appearing in school productions, she was a member of a theater group that
tackled social issues. Washington soon won a theater scholarship to George Washington University, where she earned a degree in performance studies. She has had major roles in
movies such as Django Unchained (2012), Ray (2004) and The Last King of Scotland (2006).

Washington is active in many social and political causes. She is a member of the Creative
Coalition and sits on the board of V-Day, an organization that works to end violence against women. Washington is also a strong supporter of President Barack Obama and has
campaigned on his behalf.

In June 2013, Washington married professional football player Nnamdi Asomugha and they

The only foreign place that former president George Washington ever visited was Barbados. He went there with his brother Lawrence, who suffered from tuberculosis and hope the change of environment would do him good. The house they stayed at is still there. It's been restored and can be visited.
