"We have to ensure that oceans continue to meet our needs without compromising those of future generations. They regulate the planet's climate and are a significant source of nutrition. Their surface provides essential passage for global trade, while their depths hold current and future solutions to humanity's energy needs."
-Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
2014 Theme: Together, we have the power to protect the oceans
The celebration of World Oceans Day 2014 coincides with the first day of the twenty-fourth meeting of the Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. This year, also marks the twentieth anniversary of the entry into force of the Convention.
The United Nations will celebrate World Oceans Day 2014 and recognize the winners of the Annual World Oceans Day Oceanic Photo Competition at an event on 9 June 2014 at United Nations Headquarters.
Why do we celebrate World Oceans Day?
- To remind everyone of the major part the Ocean has in everyday life. They are the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe.
- To inform the public on the impact of the human actions on the Ocean.
- To develop a worldwide movement of citizen, towards the Ocean.
- To mobilize and unite the world's population on a project for the sustainable management of the World Ocean. They are a major source of food and medicines and a critical part of the biosphere.
- To celebrate together the beauty, the wealth and the promise of the Ocean.

Claudia Gordon
Disability is Not a Defense
|
Claudia Gordon, Esq., is the first deaf lawyer who is African American and female. She is also the first deaf student to graduate from American University (AU) Washington College of Law, in Washington, DC, in 2000. At AU, Gordon specialized in disability rights law and policy. Since earning her juris doctorate, Gordon has been active in working to ensure the rights of people with disabilities are respected.
Gordon was born in Jamaica and became deaf at age eight. Faced with discrimination, she moved to the United States where she first attended a public school, then the Lexington School for the Deaf in New York. It was at Lexington where she learned sign language. Her discrimination encouraged her to become a lawyer.
Gordon graduated from Howard University in 1995 with a bachelor of arts in political science.
At Howard, she was a Patricia Robert Harris Public Affairs Fellow, a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, and the Political Science Honor Society. More awards and honors came at American University, where she was an Equal Justice Foundation Fellow, earned the Myers Law Scholarship and the J. Franklin Bourne Scholarship. In 2002, she received the Paul G. Hearne/AAPD Leadership Award from the American Association of People with Disabilities.
Gordon received the Skadden Fellowship (for law graduates working with disabled people) that paid for her to work at the National Association of the Deaf Law and Advocacy Center. This allowed her to provide "direct representation and advocacy for poor deaf persons with a particular emphasis on outreach to those who are members of minority groups."
She has held many posts including vice-president of the National Black Deaf Advocates Association (NBDA) and provided advocacy leadership at the National Association of the Deaf Law Center; the Civil Practice Clinic at Washington College of Law, the Washington, DC Public Defender Service-Mental Health Division and the Black Law Students Association among others. As of 2007, she was a policy advisor for the Department of Homeland Security's Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, involved in the area of emergency preparedness for individuals who have special needs and individuals with disabilities.
She firmly believes that "regardless of one's disability, with the right attitude, success is attainable in school and in the workplace."
