Congresswoman Lee Marks Caribbean American Heritage Month

Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) offered the following statement on her resolution marking June as National Caribbean American Heritage Month

"It's an honor to celebrate June as Caribbean American Heritage Month and the unique relationship between the United States and the Caribbean region. Our history and culture have been enriched by our Caribbean neighbors and this month is a wonderful time to reflect on our common past. From trade, energy and immigration to HIV/AIDS and disaster preparedness, the United States and the Caribbean benefit from a number of mutual policy interests. I was proud to reintroduce my Caribbean American Heritage Month Resolution, H. Res. 610, recognizing the significance of the Caribbean people and their many contributions to the United States. I will continue to work with partners in the Caribbean and Caribbean American communities to further these policy goals and celebrate the deep ties we share. This month, and every month, I encourage you to join me in celebrating the Caribbean American community."

Congresswoman Lee has led the effort to establish June as Caribbean American Heritage Month over the last several years. In June 2005, the House of Representatives unanimously adopted H. Con. Res. 71, authored by Congresswoman Lee, recognizing the significance of Caribbean people and their descendants in the history and culture of the United States. On February 14, 2006, the resolution passed the Senate, culminating a two-year, bipartisan and bicameral effort. Since the resolution's passage, the White House has issued an annual proclamation recognizing June as Caribbean American Heritage Month. President Obama issued this year's proclamation on May 13.

WALL OF FAME

Tim Duncan

 "He shoots, and he scores!

Standing 6ft 9 inches, Tim Duncan has led the San Antonio Spurs to multiple championships and is widely hailed as one of the greatest power forwards in NBA history. He became the first player in the NBA to be selected to the All-NBA team and All-Defensive team in each of his first 13 seasons in the league. He also won his third NBA Finals MVP Award in 2005 and his fourth NBA Championship in 2007. He was selected to 14 NBA All-Star games between 1998 and 2013 and named NBA MVP in 2002 and 2003.

He is the only son born to Lone, a midwife, and William Duncan, a mason; he has two older sisters, Cheryl and Tricia. He was born and raised in Christiansted, a town on St. Croix, one of the main islands composing the United States Virgin Islands. In school, Duncan was a bright student and excelled in his studies.

He was dealt an emotional blow when his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and died one day before his 14th birthday. In her last days, she made Duncan and his sisters promise to finish college with a degree, which would later explain Duncan's refusal to leave college early. A great swimmer, Duncan gave up competitive swimming after his mother's death, but was inspired by his brother-in-law to try basketball.

Duncan married his wife Amy in 2001. They are the parents of a son and a daughter. Off the court, he is an active community member. The Tim Duncan Foundation, which Amy Duncan heads, promotes health, education and recreation causes that improve the lives of young children in San Antonio, Winston-Salem and St. Croix. In addition, Duncan supports a host of other social programs in San Antonio, including the Children's Bereavement Center and the Cancer Therapy and Research Center.
