THE VOLUNTEER BRIEF

Martine Ferguson

This month's Volunteer Spotlight is on Leigh Scott!
Leigh (right) with her daughter Dana, a vet technician, and Penny -- one of her pups

Leigh comes every other Friday to dote on our Kitties. I will let Leigh introduce herself in her own words. Thank you Leigh for taking great care of Fluffy & Gianni!

"Animals have always been a big part of my life, both at home and at work.  At home I have had furry companions of many kinds, including cats, dogs, bunnies, hamsters, and horses.  And through the years my work as an environmental educator landed me several positions that enabled me to help wildlife, often by protecting habitat but also providing care for animals in need.

"One of the most enjoyable jobs I ever had was Education Director for Carolina Tiger Rescue, a nonprofit organization in North Carolina that serves as a sanctuary for wild cats.

"After more than 25 years working in the nonprofit sector, in 2014 I quit my job to spend more time traveling with my new husband and to pursue other interests.  I'm currently close to completion of a 2-year curriculum that will lead to my certification as a vegetarian chef.

"While I have enjoyed spending more time in the kitchen, I also need some time away from the house, and that's where my involvement at House with a Heart comes in.

"Several months ago I saw the National Geographic video about HWAH and was very happy to discover that it was within reasonable driving distance of my home in northern Virginia.  So last fall I visited the house to meet the pups, kitties, and people.  I was totally impressed by how clean and organized everything was, and I was pleased to be accepted as a kitty volunteer.  The best part of my duty is providing lap time for the sweet kitties at the house.

"Currently my husband and I have five animals:  two dogs (mixed breeds -- border collie and cattle dog) who love to chase balls in the back yard and three cats (including one geriatric Siamese).  But who's counting?"
Welcome!

Seeking help for Foster Care Coordinator
We are looking for two or three volunteers to join Caren S. who is our new Foster Care Coordinator. This is a brand new system we are setting up and is still in the planning stages.  The hope is to continue the Sanctuary's mission by placing Sanctuary foster pets into the homes of loving families capable and willing to take on an advanced-aged or special-needs pet. The Volunteers on Caren's Team would assist with in-home visits for potential foster families and regular follow-up visits once a pet is placed.  If you're interested in volunteering, email me at volunteer@housewithaheart.com!
THANK YOU to our kennel assistants..

Your hard work and dedication are amazing.
Without you there would be no Sanctuary.

Don't forget that you can now participate in the Quality-Time-with-Residents Program if you are interested and have time at the end of your shift. We are hoping to enrich both your service with us and the lives of our senior residents. Please let me or Sher know if you are interested in participating or would like further details.
