Remembering Our
Little Gene
It is with great sorrow that we inform you that our little Gene has crossed the Rainbow Bridge.  His passing was unexpected and, for that reason, we at the Sanctuary didn't have the opportunity to say goodbye to him.  But we're sure he knew how loved and cherished he was by so many people.

Honey & Gene

Gene and his little sister, Honey, came to House with a Heart about four years ago.  We received a call from one of the placement counselors at the local shelter that two adorable senior Pomeranians has been surrendered by their owners.

Mama Harriette and her husband rushed over to bring the two little sweeties to their new forever home.  And, who knew that along with them, a feisty Jack Russell named Noodle would also hitch a ride to House with a Heart.

Unfortunately, but not unexpectedly, all three suffered from kennel cough and spent their first days at the Sanctuary quarantined in an upstairs room, medicated and monitored until their condition resolved.  It's both ironic and tragic that all three would suffer lifelong respiratory conditions.

Honey, Gene & Trouble

Gene, age 14, and Honey, age 12, were a tightly bonded pair and won the hearts of everyone who entered the Sanctuary.  There was nothing cuter than seeing these two balls of fur cuddled together in a doggie bed or playing and enjoying each other's company.

It was a terrible day when we discovered that Honey's cough was the result of an inoperable throat tumor.  She left us way too soon and it was heartbreaking to see Gene looking for his sister, not aware that she was gone.

But Gene's life was to be enriched by the caring attention of Kathy and Katherine, two of our volunteers.  The ladies formed a strong bond with Gene, which eventually resulted in the little guy relocating to their home as a foster.  And there he reigned, receiving constant love and attention until the final crisis that ended his life last weekend.

We are so grateful to Kathy and Katherine for allowing Gene into their hearts and providing him with a very special home.

All of us at House with a Heart thank you.
