Meet Monroe --
The Newest Addition To Our Family

We're so happy to introduce you to the newest HWAH resident.  Unlike our other pups and kitties he's not a senior and he has no special needs.  So why, you might ask, is he at the Sanctuary?  Well, because this little hunk of love is a MIRACLE!

Here's Monroe's story.

When our dear friend Rebecca, a kind and wonderful lady who works very hard to rescue homeless pets from shelters, asked us to foster a six-month-old Chihuahua puppy who was  turned into the Baltimore shelter as a stray, we could hardly refuse.

Rebecca's friend picked him up at the shelter and brought him to the Sanctuary.  When he arrived, our hearts sank.  The little guy was thoroughly helpless.  He couldn't see.  He couldn't stand up without leaning against the side of the kennel for support.

He didn't even know how to eat.  It seemed that he might have been born with brain damage.  Or that he suffered an injury while a stray.   Our hearts broke for little Monroe.  But of course, we knew we would give him the very best care we could and love him a lot while he was with us.

And then it happened.  Within a week of his arrival at HWAH, Monroe could see.  He could stand without support and could walk around the Sanctuary.  He was eating like a little piggy.  And, because he was such a love bug, everyone who came to HWAH wanted to cuddle with him.

Recovering From Bleeding Paws

When Monroe was taken for a neurological consult, the vet was of the opinion that Monroe had either been oxygen-deprived or had been kept in a dark, confined space for an extended period of time.  In truth, we'll never know for sure.

But what we do know is that we fell in love with this sweet, intelligent, energetic puppy.  He has become a Sanctuary good will ambassador and extraordinary playmate for Joie and Spirit Polvinale, Sher's own standard poodles and for the young dogs who come to the Sanctuary for short-term foster care.  Monroe is loving life and we are loving him.

So our miracle boy has become our Miracle Mascot and his loving presence has added a new dimension to House with a Heart.

Please Read IMPORTANT INFORMATION about Senior Pet Safety Net pets:

The Senior Pet Safety Net Email is a COURTESY POSTING for senior or special needs dogs or cats who need a home.  This is  a service offered by HWAH to help  senior dogs or cats in need when HWAH is not able to accept them into the HWAH program. If you have questions about, or an interest in, the featured pet, please contact the person indicated in the Safety Net email.

Safety Net Pets are not HWAH Residents.  Once a Pet becomes a HWAH Resident, our commitment is that they will remain at HWAH for their entire life.  They will not be put up for adoption.

As always we are grateful for your support and your assistance in helping these pets in need by sharing their plight with anyone you feel might be interested.

HWAH truly believes:  "Saving one dog might not change the world.  But, surely for that one dog the world will change forever."

Redz - Photogenic Toy Poodle
When we first saw this beautiful ten year old Toy Poodle named Redz, we didn't even notice that he has no lower jaw.  We posted him here once before, back in April.

Redz was attacked by another dog, and as a result, his lower jaw had to be removed.  But his lower lip was reconstructed.  Even though he has no teeth, he eats and drinks normally (soft food, please) and is well-housebroken.

Surrendered to a shelter, Redz was rescued by our friends at For The Love of Poodles & Pooches in Richmond.  He's being fostered at a home with ten other dogs, from a four pound Yorkie to an 80 pound German Shepherd, and he gets along great with all of them!  During the day he enjoys his independence, and if the weather's nice he loves being in the yard.  But at night, he'll be ready to cuddle with you on the couch.

Rescued from the shelter -- that's half the battle.  Now let's find this sweet Toy Poodle a cozy new home!
