Happy New Year!

With the new year come a lot of exciting new volunteer opportunities at House with a Heart..

CALLING ALL KENNEL ASSISTANTS:  We are still looking for Kennel Assistants for Monday evening, Tuesday morning, Thursday morning and evening, and Friday morning. Evening shifts run anywhere in the 5pm-8pm interval and the morning shifts run anywhere in the 8am-11am time frame.

An overview of the Kennel Assistant position and other opportunities can be found at our website: http://housewithaheart.com/site/Volunteer-Opportunities.html

If you would like to volunteer as an extra Kennel Assistant to aid the regularly scheduled Kennel Assistant during holidays, that would be great as well! As you know the Sanctuary takes in quite a few fosters during holiday seasons and we could always use extra pairs of hands during those hectic times. If you wish to volunteer strictly during holiday seasons, please let me know and I'll be thrilled to add you to the Holiday list.

NEW VOLUNTEER POSITIONS:  We have identified new volunteer positions out of necessity. Filling these positions would be a BIG help to Sher and alleviate the workload on her as well as some of our current volunteers. We are seeking the following:

  • Give Up Counselor - Debbie is our terrific Give Up Counselor but she gets so many calls that we would like to add another volunteer to help her handle give-up requests. This is a challenging but very rewarding position.
  • Safety Net Follow Up Volunteer- to follow up with everyone who has posted a pet on our Safety Net and inquire whether the pet was placed and, if the pet has still not been placed, they wish to re-post with us. We would love to take them all but we would need a few hundred acres for that.
  • Activities Director - to work closely with Sher on activities to enrich the lives of each pup and kitty who lives at HWAH. These could include:  taking a pup for a leashed walk either in the Sanctuary neighborhood or at a nearby park, providing massage, even just taking a pup for a ride in the car. We are seeking ways to have more planned activities during the day for our pups. The Activities Director will most likely need to have a team of volunteers to carry out the activities planned.  This will ensure that the residents have interesting, fun days -- and not just eating, sleeping and going potty.
  • Doggie Treat Baker- to bake the doggie treats that our Seniors love so voraciously.  We provide the recipe & ingredients; we just need someone to bake and bag them.
  • Administrative Volunteer - to do all the filing, administrative items on the HWAH email, help with preparing and mailing out HWAH acknowledgement cards, publicity and promotional mailings etc. We're seeking a volunteer with good organizational skills who can spend at least a couple hours at the Sanctuary each week.
  • Experienced Dog Walkers - to take the Biggies for a ½ hour to 1 hour walk around the Sanctuary neighborhood. Please only consider this position if you have experience walking dogs and if you are physically able to handle a large dog like Logan or Spirit. We would also like our healthier Smalls to get 'walked' and to that purpose we have a doggie stroller in which they can be strolled.

SPECIAL PROJECT:  We are calling for 4-6 volunteers to help with a one-time project to move pea gravel from the driveway to areas in the back of the Sanctuary and to the play yards as needed.  These volunteers would come on Saturdays with wheelbarrows and shovels to move the gravel to where it is needed.  This will likely take several weekends to complete and can be scheduled around the weather.  Each time the temperature goes up our small back yard turns to mud, and it will be even worse after a few snows and then in the Spring too.  Once we have some volunteers committed to helping, Sher will have the gravel delivered.

AND ONE MORE TEMPORARY REQUEST:  We also need a Vet Visit Volunteer- to make appointments during the day and take any pups in need of veterinary care to the Olney-Sandy Spring animal hospital or a Specialist.  This position is temporary while our sweet vice-president Harriette is recovering from hip replacement surgery. Please keep Harriette in your thoughts and prayers as she goes through rehabilitation. We will miss her dearly while she is away and we look forward to having her cheerful self back at the Sanctuary. Faith will be pining away for her!

Email me at titine73@yahoo.com if you are interested in any of these opportunities or if you have questions.

It is an absolute privilege to work with all the wonderful volunteers at the Sanctuary. I feel truly blessed to know each and every one of you.  Let's make 2014 the best year ever at House with a Heart.  See you around the Sanctuary!

Hugs,

Martine Ferguson
